A comparison of lateral and medial intraparietal areas during a visual categorization task.

Categorization is essential for interpreting sensory stimuli and guiding our actions. Recent studies have revealed robust neuronal category representations in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP). Here, we examine the specialization of LIP for categorization and the roles of other parietal areas by comparing LIP and the medial intraparietal area (MIP) during a visual categorization task. MIP is involved in goal-directed arm movements and visuomotor coordination but has not been implicated in non-motor cognitive functions, such as categorization. As expected, we found strong category encoding i

Temporal resolution deficits in patients with refractory complex partial seizures and mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS).

We studied the temporal resolution ability in patients with refractory complex partial seizures and mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) using Gaps-In-Noise (GIN) test in a prospective cross-sectional study. Thirteen patients with right MTS (age: 31±7.67 years; M:F=8:5) and 13 patients with left MTS (age: 25.76±8.26 years; M:F=9:4) having normal hearing and mini-mental state examination (MMSE) score of >23/30 were recruited. Fifty healthy volunteers (26.3±5.17 years; M:F=28:22) formed the control group. Gaps-In-Noise test demonstrated impaired temporal resolution: 69.2% of patients with right MTS (

Level-dependent changes in detection of temporal gaps in noise markers by adults with normal and impaired hearing.

Compression in the basilar-membrane input-output response flattens the temporal envelope of a fluctuating signal when more gain is applied to lower level than higher level temporal components. As a result, level-dependent changes in gap detection for signals with different depths of envelope fluctuation and for subjects with normal and impaired hearing may reveal effects of compression. To test these assumptions, gap detection with and without a broadband noise was measured with 1, 000-Hz-wide (flatter) and 50-Hz-wide (fluctuating) noise markers as a function of marker level. As marker level i

A Cortical Stress Signature of Fear-Induced Walking: Mobile Electroencephalography Theta Suppression in Older Women With Fear of Falling.

BACKGROUND: Fear of falling is one of the most common and disabling stress responses of later life, yet how it is expressed in the brain during real walking is poorly understood. We examined whether walking under a naturalistic psychological threat, a fear-of-falling stressor, changes cortical oscillatory activity in older women, using mobile electroencephalography. METHODS: In this within-subject study, 30 community-dwelling women aged 65 years or older underwent three-dimensional gait analysis with concurrent 14-channel electroencephalography (128 Hz) during habitual walking and after intro

Synaptotagmin-7 drives stress-induced cardiomyocyte necroptosis via the p53-Bak-mPTP axis.

Rationale: High-intensity psychological and physiological stress contributed greatly to development of cardiac disorders in contemporary society. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. Synaptotagmin-7 (Syt7), a Ca²⁺ sensor with high affinity, has been associated with synaptic transmission and tumor progression, but its role in cardiac stress responses remains poorly defined. Methods: Corticosterone (CORT) was used to induce stress injury in vivo and in vitro. The expression of Syt7 was modulated by genetic knockout, injection of adenoviral siRNA or injection of ad

DSCnet: detection of drug and alcohol addiction mechanisms based on multi-angle feature learning from the hybrid representation of EEG.

INTRODUCTION: Drug and alcohol addiction impair neurotransmitter systems, leading to severe physiological, psychological, and social issues. Electroencephalography (EEG) is commonly used to analyze addiction mechanisms, but traditional feature extraction methods such as time-frequency analysis, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) fail to capture complex relationships between variables. METHODS: This paper proposes DSCnet, a novel neural network model for addiction detection. DSCnet combines embedding layers, skip connections, depthwise separable convol

Inflammation and Connexin 43 profiles in the prefrontal cortex are relevant to stress susceptibility and resilience in mice.

Depression is a major chronic mental illness worldwide, characterized by anhedonia and pessimism. Exposed to the same stressful stimuli, some people behave normally, while others exhibit negative behaviors and psychology. The exact molecular mechanisms linking stress-induced depressive susceptibility and resilience remain unclear. Connexin 43 (Cx43) forms gap junction channels between the astrocytes, acting as a crucial role in the pathogenesis of depression. Cx43 dysfunction could lead to depressive behaviors, and depression down-regulates the expression of Cx43 in the prefrontal cortex (PFC)

Altered top-down cognitive control and auditory processing in tinnitus: evidences from auditory and visual spatial stroop.

PURPOSE: Tinnitus is the perception of a sound in the absence of external stimulus. Currently, the pathophysiology of tinnitus is not fully understood, but recent studies indicate that alterations in the brain involve non-auditory areas, including the prefrontal cortex. Here, we hypothesize that these brain alterations affect top-down cognitive control mechanisms that play a role in the regulation of sensations, emotions and attention resources. METHODS: The efficiency of the executive control as well as simple reaction speed and processing speed were evaluated in tinnitus participants (TP) a

Chemosensory detectability of 1-butanol and 2-heptanone singly and in binary mixtures.

Using 1-butanol and 2-heptanone as stimuli, we measured detectability (i.e., psychometric) functions for the odor, nasal pungency, and eye irritation of these two substances alone and in binary mixtures. Nasal pungency responses were tested in subjects lacking olfaction (i.e., anosmics) for whom odors do not interfere. Eye irritation responses were tested in normosmics and anosmics, and found to be similar in both groups so their results were pooled. When all stimuli--single and mixtures--were transformed into concentration units of one (or the other) chemical, a single function could fit all

Evidence that hidden hearing loss underlies amplitude modulation encoding deficits in individuals with and without tinnitus.

Damage to auditory nerve fibers that expresses with suprathreshold sounds but is hidden from the audiogram has been proposed to underlie deficits in temporal coding ability observed among individuals with otherwise normal hearing, and to be present in individuals experiencing chronic tinnitus with clinically normal audiograms. We tested whether these individuals may have hidden synaptic losses on auditory nerve fibers with low spontaneous rates of firing (low-SR fibers) that are important for coding suprathreshold sounds in noise while high-SR fibers determining threshold responses in quiet re

Opposing dorsal/ventral stream dynamics during figure-ground segregation.

The visual system has been commonly subdivided into two segregated visual processing streams: The dorsal pathway processes mainly spatial information, and the ventral pathway specializes in object perception. Recent findings, however, indicate that different forms of interaction (cross-talk) exist between the dorsal and the ventral stream. Here, we used TMS and concurrent EEG recordings to explore these interactions between the dorsal and ventral stream during figure-ground segregation. In two separate experiments, we used repetitive TMS and single-pulse TMS to disrupt processing in the dorsal

Necrosulfonamide promotes hair growth and ameliorates DHT-induced hair growth inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia affects patients' appearance and psychology. Mixed-lineage kinase domain-like pseudokinase (MLKL)-mediated necroptosis plays a role in various skin diseases, but its effect on hair growth is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of MLKL on hair growth and its regulatory mechanisms and to determine the potential clinical value of Necrosulfonamide (NSA, a MLKL-targeting inhibitor) in promoting hair growth and counteracting dihydrotestosterone (DHT) inhibition of hair growth. METHODS: The expression level of MLKL was detected in the scalp of androgenetic alopecia (

Investigation of contemporary college students' mental health status and construction of a risk prediction model.

BACKGROUND: Due to academic pressure, social relations, and the change of adapting to independent life, college students are under high levels of pressure. Therefore, it is very important to study the mental health problems of college students. Developing a predictive model that can detect early warning signals of college students' mental health risks can help support early intervention and improve overall well-being. AIM: To investigate college students' present psychological well-being, identify the contributing factors to its decline, and construct a predictive nomogram model. METHODS: We

Reward Size Informs Repeat-Switch Decisions and Strongly Modulates the Activity of Neurons in Parietal Cortex.

Behavior is guided by previous experience. Good, positive outcomes drive a repetition of a previous behavior or choice, whereas poor or bad outcomes lead to an avoidance. How these basic drives are implemented by the brain has been of primary interest to psychology and neuroscience. We engaged animals in a choice task in which the size of a reward outcome strongly governed the animals' subsequent decision whether to repeat or switch the previous choice. We recorded the discharge activity of neurons implicated in reward-based choice in 2 regions of parietal cortex. We found that the tendency to

The coeruleus/subcoeruleus complex in idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder.

Idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder is characterized by nocturnal violence, increased muscle tone during rapid eye movement sleep and the lack of any other neurological disease. However, idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder can precede parkinsonism and dementia by several years. Using 3 T magnetic resonance imaging and neuromelanin-sensitive sequences, we previously found that the signal intensity was reduced in the locus coeruleus/subcoeruleus area of patients with Parkinson's disease and rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder. Here, we studied the in

Predicting the threshold of single-pulse electrical stimuli using a stochastic auditory nerve model: the effects of noise.

An important factor that may play a role in speech recognition by individuals with cochlear implants is that electrically stimulated nerves respond with a much higher level of synchrony than is normally observed in acoustically stimulated nerves. Recent work has indicated that the addition of noise to an electrical stimulus may result in neural responses whose statistical characteristics are more similar to those observed in acoustically driven neurons. Psychophysical data have indicated that performance on some tasks might also be enhanced by the addition of noise. However, little theoretical

Decoding psychotic and other psychiatric disorders through placental organ: From cytoarchitecture to stress-responsive signaling networks.

Psychosis-defined as a profound disconnection between objective external reality and internal mental representations-represents a critical mental health condition, especially when it emerges for the first time during pregnancy. First-episode psychosis (FEP) in pregnant women (FEP-PW), though rare, presents severe risks for both maternal and fetal health. Despite its clinical significance, the biological mechanisms underlying FEP-PW remain poorly understood. This narrative review investigates the human placenta as a valuable and dynamic organ for decoding psychiatric and psychological disorders
