The prevalence and polysomnographic characteristics of treatment-emergent central sleep apnea with obstructive sleep apnea.

PURPOSE: To investigate the prevalence of treatment-emergent central sleep apnea (TECSA) in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) during continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) titration and assess their polysomnographic characteristics. METHODS: A total of 116 patients with OSAS who underwent full-night CPAP titration at the Sleep Laboratory of Adana City Research and Education Hospital from September 2017 to January 2018 were recruited for the study. The patients' polysomnographic data related to respiratory events and sleep stages were reviewed in a retrospective mann

[Obstructive sleep apneas and cardiovascular diseases].

Obstructive sleep apneas (OSA) are a breathing disorder characterized by recurrent apneas and hypopneas associated with complete or partial obstruction of the upper airways during sleep, resulting in disturbed sleep architecture, repeated hypoxemia and awakenings, and daytime sleepiness. OSA syndrome affects up to 34% of men and 17% of women in Western countries. Abnormalities in upper airway anatomy (frequently due to obesity), muscle tone, or neural control of breathing are the main causes. OSA is associated with impaired cognitive function and favors the onset of hypertension, being a major

Morphology of the uvula in obstructive sleep apnea.

Alterations in pharyngeal structure and function are considered fundamental in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, little is known about morphologic features of the pharynx in patients with OSA. We therefore studied the tissue composition of the uvula (midsagittal section) in patients with OSA, using a quantitative, morphometric point-counting technique. Uvula tissue was obtained by uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) in 33 patients (mean number of apneas per hour of sleep = 32.7 +/- 5.2) and by autopsy in 22 normal subjects not known to have OSA. All statistical compariso

Obstructive sleep apnea in epilepsy patients: the Sleep Apnea scale of the Sleep Disorders Questionnaire (SA-SDQ) is a useful screening instrument for obstructive sleep apnea in a disease-specific population.

OBJECTIVE: To determine useful cutoffs on the Sleep Apnea scale of the Sleep Disorders Questionnaire (SA-SDQ) in an epilepsy population. BACKGROUND: Epilepsy and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) frequently coexist, and treating OSA in epilepsy patients may reduce seizure frequency and improve daytime sleepiness. The SA-SDQ, a 12-item validated measure of sleep-related breathing disorders, may be a useful tool to screen epilepsy patients for OSA, although appropriate cutoff points have not been established in this population. Previously suggested SA-SDQ cutoff points for OSA in a non-epilepsy pop

Obstructive airway disease and obstructive sleep apnea: effect of pulmonary function.

This study sought to determine whether reduced pulmonary function in obstructive airway disease (OAD) is an independent risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This was a prospective observational study conducted at an outpatient pulmonary clinic. Adults with a known diagnosis of COPD/asthma were enrolled as OAD group. Family members without a history of COPD/asthma who accompanied these patients to the clinic were enrolled as a control group. The Berlin Questionnaire (BQ) was used to assess OSA risk in the OAD group and controls. Forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV(1) % predicted

Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Role of the Diaphragm.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) causes multiple local and systemic pathophysiological consequences, which lead to an increase in morbidity and mortality in patients suffering from this disorder. OSA presents with various nocturnal events of apnoeas or hypopneas and with sub-clinical airflow limitations during wakefulness. OSA involves a large percentage of the population, particularly men, but the estimate of OSA patients could be much broader than data from the literature. Most of the research carried out in the muscle field is to understand the causes of the presence of chronic nocturnal desat

Association of nasopharynx cancer with obstructive sleep apnea.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the extensive research conducted on the association between OSA and HNCs, the specific relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has received comparatively less attention. The present study aimed to explore the association between OSA and NPC. METHODS: The data for this study was drawn from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2010. The study incorporated a total of 3,235 NPC patients and 12,940 propensity score-matched controls. The NPC and controls' baseline clinical and demographic parameters were compared using standa

NLRP3 Inflammasome Triggers Inflammation of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is widespread in the population and affects as many as one billion people worldwide. OSA is associated with dysfunction of the brain system that controls breathing, which leads to intermittent hypoxia (IH), hypercapnia, and oxidative stress (OS). The number of NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing (NLRP3) inflammasome was increased after IH, hypercapnia, and OS. NLRP3 inflammasome is closely related to inflammation. NLRP3 inflammasome causes a series of inflammatory diseases by activating IL-1β and IL-18. Subsequently, NLRP3 inflammasome plays an import

[Advances in rehabilitation therapy for obstructive sleep apnea].

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a systemic disease with multi-organ impairment. Rehabilitation therapy is an important component of the comprehensive treatment strategy for OSA. Exercise training can reduce the severity of sleep apnea and daytime sleepiness in OSA patients, while improving sleep efficiency and cardiopulmonary function. Upper airway muscle training can enhance muscle tone during sleep and increase airway anti-collapse capacity, although its long-term efficacy requires further confirmation through high-quality studies. Respiratory muscle training may reduce upper airway collaps

Beyond Snoring: Unexpected Presentation of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common yet often underdiagnosed sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep. We present a case of a 24-year-old, non-obese male patient with severe OSAS who exhibited an atypical clinical picture dominated by long-standing fatigue, poor concentration, and digital clubbing. Diagnostic evaluation included polysomnography, which confirmed severe OSAS, and ancillary testing to exclude pulmonary, cardiac, and gastrointestinal causes of clubbing. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy led t

Developing a Personalized Approach to Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

All areas of medicine are focused on developing a personalized approach to diagnosis and treatment of specific conditions. This is based on the fundamental concept that all subjects with apparently the same disorder are different. There are multiple reasons for these differences. These include differences in the sequence of DNA, differences in the environment, differences in epigenetics, some of which may be driven by environmental differences and differences in the microbiome. These different factors will result in variations in multiple aspects of the phenotype. This includes different pathw

Tackling obstructive sleep apnea with pharmacotherapeutics: expert guidance.

INTRODUCTION: The efficacy of non-pharmacotherapeutic treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, a highly prevalent condition with serious cardiometabolic and neurocognitive health consequences, is well established. Supplementing traditional treatment strategies with medications can improve symptoms and reduce side effects. Efforts to identify medications that target the causes of sleep apnea have met with mixed success. However, this remains a worthwhile objective for researchers to pursue, given the potential benefit pharmacotherapy could bring to those patients who reject or struggle to adhere t

Persistent Obstructive Sleep Apnea Post-adenotonsillectomy in Children.

Background Childhood obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder in children mostly due to adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Therefore, adenotonsillectomy is the mainstay of treatment. However, the outcome of adenotonsillectomy is limited in some patients who develop persistent OSA (POSA). We aim to evaluate the prevalence, risk factors, and treatments of POSA in the pediatric population in Qatar. Methodology This is a retrospective review of medical electronic records of patients aged 1-18 years, who underwent adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy at Sidra Medicine (Doha, Qatar) between June 20

[Obstructive sleep apnea - underestimated cognitive impairments risk factor].

About 40% of cases of cognitive impairment (CI) are associated with modifiable risk factors, such as inactivity, hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Recently, sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA), have been considered among these factors. OSA is one of the most widespread conditions among patients with CI. The pathogenesis of cerebral lesions in OSA is complex. Timely diagnosis and complex therapy of patients with OSA can reduce the risk, reduce the severity of CI and slow their progression. Along with non-drug methods of treatment, the use of the drug Cortexin wit
