Validation of a smartphone-based tremor measurement tool for Parkinson's disease.

This study validates a smartphone app for hand tremor assessment in Parkinson's disease (PD). Twenty-eight PD patients performed a weekly tremor test using the app while wearing a wrist-worn actigraphy device (GeneActiv), of which twenty-one yielded usable actigraphy data for comparative analysis. Features were extracted from both devices to compare smartphone application derived data against actigraphy measurements. Further analysis examined the validity of the smartphone data in ON versus OFF medication states and against clinical scales (MDS-UPDRS). Statistical tests show high correlations

Towards Enhancing Low Vision Usability of Data Charts on Smartphones.

The importance of data charts is self-evident, given their ability to express complex data in a simple format that facilitates quick and easy comparisons, analysis, and consumption. However, the inherent visual nature of the charts creates barriers for people with visual impairments to reap the associated benefits to the same extent as their sighted peers. While extant research has predominantly focused on understanding and addressing these barriers for blind screen reader users, the needs of low-vision screen magnifier users have been largely overlooked. In an interview study, almost all low-

Reliability and Validity of Smartphone Cognitive Testing for Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration.

IMPORTANCE: Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) is relatively rare, behavioral and motor symptoms increase travel burden, and standard neuropsychological tests are not sensitive to early-stage disease. Remote smartphone-based cognitive assessments could mitigate these barriers to trial recruitment and success, but no such tools are validated for FTLD. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reliability and validity of smartphone-based cognitive measures for remote FTLD evaluations. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cohort study conducted from January 10, 2019, to July 31, 2023, controls and

Geographic-Scale Coffee Cherry Counting with Smartphones and Deep Learning.

Deep learning and computer vision, using remote sensing and drones, are 2 promising nondestructive methods for plant monitoring and phenotyping. However, their applications are infeasible for many crop systems under tree canopies, such as coffee crops, making it challenging to perform plant monitoring and phenotyping at a large spatial scale at a low cost. This study aims to develop a geographic-scale monitoring method for coffee cherry counting, supported by an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered citizen science approach. The approach uses basic smartphones to take a few pictures of coffee t

Viewing distance and character size in the use of smartphones across the lifespan.

The use of smartphones has seen an extraordinary growth in recent years, thus the understanding of visual habits associated with the use of such devices across the lifespan is becoming important. In the present study we measured viewing distance and character size in a group of non-presbyopes (n = 157) and a group of presbyopes (n = 60) while participants read a simple text message on their smartphone. Results showed that non-presbyopes use shorter viewing distances as compared to presbyopes, a behavior causing a significantly higher accommodative demand. Presbyopes also use larger character s

Neurochemical Correlates of Cue Reactivity in Individuals with Excessive Smartphone Use.

BACKGROUND: Excessive smartphone use (ESU), that is, a pattern of smartphone use that shows specific features of addictive behavior, has increasingly attracted societal and scientific interest in the past years. On the neurobiological level, ESU has recently been related to structural and functional variation in reward and salience processing networks, as shown by, for example, aberrant patterns of neural activity elicited by specific smartphone cues. OBJECTIVES: Expanding on these findings, using cross-modal correlations of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based measures with nuclear imaging

Reading on a smartphone affects sigh generation, brain activity, and comprehension.

Electronic devices have become an indispensable part of our daily lives, while their negative aspects have been reported. One disadvantage is that reading comprehension is reduced when reading from an electronic device; the cause of this deficit in performance is unclear. In this study, we investigated the cause for comprehension decline when reading on a smartphone by simultaneously measuring respiration and brain activity during reading in 34 healthy individuals. We found that, compared to reading on a paper medium, reading on a smartphone elicits fewer sighs, promotes brain overactivity in
