Enhancing smoking cessation rates in primary care.

BACKGROUND: The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) guidelines on smoking cessation recommend that primary care physicians provide both brief advice against smoking and follow-up care for all smokers. Surveys show that although physicians understand the importance of smoking cessation, the actual implementation of these guidelines is limited. The main objective of our study was to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of 2 different approaches to smoking cessation counseling: practice-based and community-based. METHODS: Both smoking cessation approaches consisted of 1 recruitm

Correlates of Tobacco Use and Consumption Among Hospitalized Psychiatric Patients.

Using a cross-sectional analysis, we assessed correlates of tobacco use and tobacco consumption from inpatient records (N = 2,060) from a st … nalizing, externalizing, and psychotic disorder; using cigarettes; and living in a county without a smoke-free policy. Psychiatric patients should be screened for specific associative variables as part of tobacco-use assessments. Future research may expand on the current findings to develop strategies to enhance tobacco treatment among psychiatric patients.

Opinions of Hospitalized Patients with Mental Disorders and Patients in Basic Health Units in Brazil Regarding Tobacco Smoking.

This study aims to investigate the opinions of psychiatric patients and the general population on the smoking ban in health service facilities. A cross-sectional study was carried out in a mental health outpatient care unit (MHOC; n = 126), a psychiatric hospital (PH; n = 126), and a basic health unit (BHU; n = 126). The participants in the hospital were less in favor of the smoking ban compared with those attending out-of-hospital units (MHOC, 84%; PH, 69%; and BHU, 100%). Subjects with four or more psychiatric admissions (odds ratio (OR), 3.24) and smokers (OR, 3.18) were most likely to agre

"Stealth Vaping Is Everywhere": The Narratives of Young Māori Adults in New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION: Vape use is increasing, particularly among young people who have never been cigarette smokers. Stealth vaping, that is, discrete use in places where it is prohibited, is also reported to be increasing. Regular vape use is high among those who identify as Māori, with the Tobacco Industry reported to be targeting Indigenous communities, thus continuing long-running harmful, colonial practices. AIMS AND METHODS: This qualitative study, using group interviews within a kaupapa Māori framework, explored stealth vaping with 19 young adults, of whom 18 identified as Māori in the Indigen

Predictors of car smoking rules among smokers in France, Germany and the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: As exposure to tobacco smoke pollution (TSP) has been identified as a cause of premature death and disease in non-smokers, and studies have demonstrated that smoking in cars produces high levels of TSP, this study will investigate smokers' rules for smoking in their cars, and predictors of car smoking rules, including potentially modifiable correlates. METHODS: Data were drawn from nationally representative samples of current smokers from the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project surveys in France (2007), Germany (2007), and the Netherlands (2008). Measuring the Integration of Tobacco Policy and Treatment into the Behavioral Health Care Delivery System: How Are We Doing?

People with a mental illness and/or drug use disorder have a higher rate of smoking than adults in general. To address this challenge, recommendations include integrating tobacco-free policies and tobacco dependency treatment into the behavioral health care delivery system. Currently, little is known regarding levels of such integration. A 65-item Internet survey measuring integration assessed three areas: a) policies addressing the use of tobacco products; b) provision of evidence-based tobacco dependence treatment; and, c) capacity to help employees/volunteers quit tobacco use. The survey wa

Trends in Deaths Attributable to Smoking in China, Japan, United Kingdom, and United States From 1990 to 2019.

Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the long-term trends of deaths attributable smoking in China, Japan, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US). Methods: Using 2000-2019 death data from Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019, we estimated age-period-cohort effects on smoking attributable mortality, and decomposed of differences in smoking-attributable deaths in 1990 and 2019 into demographic factors. Results: From 1990 to 2019, smoking-attributable deaths increased in China, which was due to population growth and demographic aging. From 1990 to 2019, both age-standardized smoking

Assessing client and staff beliefs and attitudes to inform tobacco-free campus policy implementation at substance use disorder treatment centers.

INTRODUCTION: US patients with behavioral health conditions have smoking rates two to three times higher than the general population. Tobacco-free environments at substance use disorder (SUD) facilities can positively impact patient's outcomes as well as the health of staff, but client perceptions to the contrary can slow adoption. This study assessed client and staff beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge regarding the implementation of a tobacco-free campus policy at McLeod Addictive Disease Center, a full-service SUD treatment facility based in Charlotte, North Carolina. METHODS: During the hei

A randomized controlled trial of potential tobacco policies prohibiting menthol flavor in cigarettes and e-cigarettes: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Menthol cigarette use remains a large public health problem and disproportionately affects Black adults in the United States. The Food and Drug Administration has proposed prohibiting menthol flavor in cigarettes to protect public health. However, e-cigarettes are available in menthol flavor and are a popular alternative product adults might switch to if menthol is prohibited in cigarettes. Research is needed to understand how availability of menthol (vs. tobacco) flavored e-cigarettes could impact cigarette use among adults who smoke menthol cigarettes. METHODS: We will recruit 1

Preventing cardiovascular disease in New Zealand: making better use of statins but also tobacco control, changing the food supply and other strategies.

There is new evidence from a very large systematic review and meta-analysis (Navarese et al 2018), that using statins for reducing levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol reduces the risk of premature death. In this viewpoint article we consider the implications of this new evidence for New Zealand but also examine how the use of statins may be improved for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in this country. We suggest the need to explore such options as fixed-dose combination pills containing statins, three-drug polypills, behind-the-counter dispensing and six-month pres

Smoking is a Risk Factor for Generation Z, Too: The Evolution of the Attitudes.

Objectives: Generation Z, defined as "post-millennial," is considered to be the first generation that could end smoking. The objective is also to take into account the evolutionary aspect of the smoking and attitudes of the Generation Z. The aim of this study was to explore the willingness of Generation Z in Slovakia to comply with the legislation adopted in the field of anti-tobacco policy and to investigate some selected social factors-intention, subjective norm and percevied behavioral control-that contribute to a lower rate of compliance. Methods: Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) data on

Smoke-free legislation and the incidence of paediatric respiratory infections and wheezing/asthma: interrupted time series analyses in the four UK nations.

We investigated the association between introduction of smoke-free legislation in the UK (March 2006 for Scotland, April 2007 for Wales and Northern Ireland, and July 2007 for England) and the incidence of respiratory diseases among children. We extracted monthly counts of new diagnoses of wheezing/asthma and RTIs among children aged 0-12 years from all general practices in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink during 1997-2012. Interrupted time series analyses were performed using generalised additive mixed models, adjusting for underlying incidence trends, population size changes, seasonal

Evaluating the efficacy of an integrated smoking cessation intervention for mental health patients: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Smoking rates, and associated negative health outcomes, are disproportionately high among people with mental illness compared to the general population. Smoke-free policies within mental health hospitals can positively impact on patients' motivation and self-efficacy to address their smoking. However, without post-discharge support, preadmission smoking behaviours typically resume. This protocol describes a randomised controlled trial that aims to assess the efficacy of linking mental health inpatients to community-based smoking cessation supports upon discharge as a means of reduc

National and State-Specific Attitudes toward Smoke-Free Parks among U.S. Adults.

Outdoor places, such as parks, remain a source of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. We assessed attitudes toward smoke-free parks among U.S. adults. Data came from the 2009-2010 National Adult Tobacco Survey, a landline and cellular telephone survey of noninstitutionalized adults aged ≥18 in the 50 U.S. states and D.C. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used to assess the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of attitudes toward smoke-free parks, overall and by current tobacco use. Overall, 38.5% of adults reported favorable attitudes toward complete smoke-free parks; prev

Secondhand smoke exposure among adolescents in the gulf cooperation council countries: analysis of global youth tobacco surveys.

This study aimed to analyze patterns and predictors of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure among adolescents (12-16 years old) in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Nationally representative data from the most recent Global Youth Tobacco Survey in each country were analyzed (N = 17,220). SHS exposure at home, in public places, and at school was assessed. Descriptive statistics summarized exposure prevalence overall and by sex. Multivariable logistic regression examined factors associated with each SHS exposure's outcome. The results showed that SHS exposure w

Preparing a Residential Substance Use Treatment Program to Be Smoke Free: A Quality Improvement Project.

Substance use disorders (SUD) are associated with a two- to fourfold increase in rates of tobacco use. Clients with comorbid SUD and tobacco dependence are more likely to die of tobacco-related causes, and smoking cessation is associated with a reduced risk of returning to substance use. Therefore, smoking cessation care should be an integral part of SUD treatment. However, many organizations do not follow recommendations for integrating tobacco cessation practices into their SUD treatment models. A large residential SUD treatment program in the southeastern United States with a tobacco use ra
