No association of smoke-free ordinances with profits from bingo and charitable games in Massachusetts.

BACKGROUND: Because it is widely played, claims that smoking restrictions will adversely affect bingo games is used as an argument against these policies. We used publicly available data from Massachusetts to assess the impact of 100% smoke-free ordinances on profits from bingo and other gambling sponsored by charitable organisations between 1985 and 2001. METHODS: We conducted two analyses: (1) a general linear model implementation of a time series analysis with net profits (adjusted to 2001 dollars) as the dependent variable, and community (as a fixed effect), year, lagged net profits, and

Identifying beliefs about smoking in patients with peripheral vascular disease.

Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is a chronic disabling illness that frequently results in the occlusion of arteries in lower limbs and may cause ischemia, gangrene, or infection. The single most significant factor contributing to both the onset and progression of PVD is smoking, which has addictive properties. Once smoking becomes a habitual behavior, combined with the atherosclerotic process, a disastrous pathway ensues. The aim of this project was to gain an understanding of the beliefs of patients with PVD who smoked. A nonexperimental, descriptive design was used. Data were obtained from

[Tobacco abuse: background and countermeasures].

The extreme extent of world-wide tobacco consumption, mainly in the form of cigarette smoking, is a phenomenon of the 20th century and can be termed a pandemic. Partly due to the massive and uninhibited advertising of the tobacco companies smoking prevalence has dramatically increased until the mid-sixties. Since then thousands of reports on the damaging-effects of smoking have been published which has led to a change in attitude and to a decrease in smoking prevalence at least in industrialised countries. In Switzerland about 25% of the adult population smoke, but the percentage in the age gr

Feasibility of smoking cessation counseling by phone with alcohol treatment center graduates.

Several studies have tested the effectiveness of telephone counseling as a smoking cessation intervention, but few have addressed its application with the special population of smokers who are also problem drinkers or recovering alcoholics. Two hundred and eighty-eight male and female subjects were recruited from six residential alcohol treatment programs in Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas to receive three postreatment telephone calls based on the stages of change model. Most subjects (71%) participated in at least one telephone counseling session, but only 38% participated in all three. Those who

Effects of a Tobacco-Free Work Site Policy on Employee Tobacco Attitudes and Behaviors, Travis County, Texas, 2010-2012.

BACKGROUND: The adoption of tobacco-free policies in behavioral health settings is an important step in reducing staff tobacco use as well as the high rates of tobacco use among people with mental illness and behavioral disorders. Studies have demonstrated the importance of staff support when implementing tobacco-free workplace policies, but there is limited research examining tobacco use prevalence among staff and staff attitude before and after policy adoption. COMMUNITY CONTEXT: Integral Care, a local authority for behavioral health and developmental disabilities in Austin, Texas, and Aust

Implementation and impact of anti-smoking interventions in three prisons in the absence of appropriate legislation.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the acceptability and impact of anti-smoking policies in three prisons in Switzerland. METHODS: A before-after intervention study in A) an open prison for sentenced prisoners, B) a closed prison for sentenced prisoners, and C) a prison for pretrial detainees. Prisoners and staff were surveyed before (2009, n=417) and after (2010-2011, n=228) the interventions. Medical staff were trained to address tobacco dependence systematically in prisoners. In prison A, a partial smoking ban was extended. No additional protection against second-hand smoke was feasible in prisons B and

Coordinating smoking cessation treatment with menstrual cycle phase to improve quit outcomes (MC-NRT): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Women experience greater difficulty achieving smoking abstinence compared to men. Recent evidence suggests that hormonal fluctuations during different phases of the menstrual cycle can contribute to lower smoking abstinence rates following a quit attempt among women. However, these findings are limited by small sample sizes and variability among targeted smoking quit dates. This clinical trial aims to clarify whether targeting the quit date to the follicular or luteal phase of the menstrual cycle can improve smoking abstinence. METHODS: Participants will enroll in an online smokin

Interventions by Health Care Professionals Who Provide Routine Child Health Care to Reduce Tobacco Smoke Exposure in Children: A Review and Meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Reducing child exposure to tobacco smoke is a public health priority. Guidelines recommend that health care professionals in child health settings should address tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) in children. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of interventions delivered by health care professionals who provide routine child health care in reducing TSE in children. DATA SOURCES: A secondary analysis of 57 trials included in a 2014 Cochrane review and a subsequent extended search was performed. Controlled trials (published through June 2015) of interventions that focused on reduc

'Do more, smoke less!' Harm reduction in action for smokers with mental health/substance use problems who cannot or will not quit.

Although smoking rates among mental health/substance abusing populations are very high, the focus of treatment and research has tended to be on substances other than tobacco. A range of harm-reduction strategies is needed, including long-term nicotine maintenance, smokeless tobacco and 'clean' nicotine products. For those who cannot or will not quit, assistance in reducing smoking should be given. Interventions for smoking among people with mental health/substance use problems may best be delivered by addressing multiple health-risk behaviours, especially physical activity, around the same tim

Does smoking intervention influence adolescent substance use disorder treatment outcomes?

Although tobacco use is reported by the majority of substance use disordered (SUD) youth, little work has examined tobacco focused interventions with this population. The present study is an initial investigation of the effect of a tobacco use intervention on adolescent SUD treatment outcomes. Participants were adolescents in SUD treatment taking part in a cigarette smoking intervention efficacy study, assessed at baseline and followed up at 3- and 6-months post-intervention. Analyses compared treatment and control groups on days using alcohol and drugs and proportion abstinent from substance

Teen reach: outcomes from a randomized, controlled trial of a tobacco reduction program for teens seen in primary medical care.

OBJECTIVE: To test the long-term efficacy of brief counseling plus a computer-based tobacco intervention for teens being seen for routine medical care. METHODS: Both smoking and nonsmoking teens, 14 to 17 years of age, who were being seen for routine visits were eligible for this 2-arm controlled trial. Staff members approached teens in waiting rooms of 7 large pediatric and family practice departments within a group-practice health maintenance organization. Of 3747 teens invited at > or =1 visits, 2526 (67%) consented and were randomized to tobacco intervention or brief dietary advice. The t

Tobacco Imagery in Indian Over-the-Top (OTT) Media and Its Compliance With Existing Tobacco Laws: A Content Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Over-the-top (OTT) media are internet-based content delivery systems offering media services to the viewers bypassing the traditional broadcasting platforms. The OTT media, with limited regulatory oversight, can serve as a source of exposure to tobacco-promoting content. AIMS AND METHODS: This study analyzed the depiction of tobacco imagery in Indian OTT programs and assessed their compliance with existing Indian tobacco control policies. We conducted a content analysis of 28 purposively sampled OTT exclusive programs (14 movies and 14 web series) in India. Breathe California me

Progress and challenges in tobacco control policies in Mexico, 2003-2017: an approach using the Tobacco Control Scale.

The study aims to assess the implementation of tobacco control policies in Mexico from 2003 through 2017 using the Tobacco Control Scale (TCS). The TCS is a research tool widely used in the European region. It facilitates assessment of tobacco control policy implementation based on six cost-effective interventions: tobacco taxes, smoke-free policies, advertising bans, public spending on the information campaign, health warnings, and smoking cessation treatment, reflecting results in a total score between 0 and 100. From 2003 through 2017, Mexico's total score improved from 24/100 to 55/100, wi

Public education in cancer prevention.

Life-style is now recognized as a main determinant of cancer risk. Public education is an important component of cancer control programmes and has been shown to be effective in leading to life-style changes. Four basic types of education programmes are reviewed: for increasing the public's awareness of cancer, for changing specific risk behaviour (such as stopping smoking), for learning self-examination skills (such as breast self-examination), and for promoting early cancer detection in the community. To change human behaviour it is best to approach the risk habit through the same forces that

Structured evaluation of gender integration in tobacco control research.

BACKGROUND: Gender norms are known to influence smoking behaviours, but studies evaluating tobacco control policies frequently overlook these factors by relying on gender-blind methodologies. The degree to which gender-sensitive methodological approaches are used in tobacco control research since the adoption of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control has not yet been evaluated. METHODS: We applied the European Institute for Gender Equality's Gender Impact Assessment (EIGE-GIA) toolkit to 43 peer-reviewed studies to assess the integration of gender-sensitive approaches in tobacco control

A Scoping Review of Theory-Based Tobacco Control Efforts for Sexual and Gender Minority Populations.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding which theories have been effectively applied in tobacco control efforts for sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals will help identify constructs to incorporate into future tobacco control efforts aimed at reducing SGM tobacco disparities. This scoping review summarizes the use of theory in SGM-focused tobacco control efforts. METHODS: We searched four databases using SGM- and tobacco-focused terms in November 2023. Two trained coders independently screened each title and abstract, reviewed the full text, and extracted data about theories used and which tobacc
