This study aims to analyze biopsychomedical interventions with transgender people. For this purpose, we carried out 35 semi-structured interviews with people who self-identify as transsexuals and transvestites in Brazil and Portugal. The responses of the study participants were systematized according to a thematic analysis, which led to the emergence of the following three main themes: "institutional power", "expectations of trans-bodies", and "experiences in health services". This study demonstrates how some trans people perform bodily modifications to fight the transphobia they experience th

Women in military contexts navigate chronic pain shaped by intersecting social, institutional, and material factors. Military institutions, grounded in masculine ideals, often exacerbate these challenges, influencing how pain is experienced, managed, and communicated. Chronic pain among women is frequently dismissed or pathologized, compelling them to conform to medical expectations to be taken seriously. Gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, and migration further compound these experiences. Additionally, military women shoulder gendered caregiving roles and may face personal or systemic t

BACKGROUND: A range of factors have been found to influence the onset and maintenance of smoking among adolescents. The aim was to explore interrelationships among adolescent smoking and certain personal influences (academic achievement, life satisfaction and future-orientedness) and social influences (hostility, social comparison and perceived friends' smoking) using a cultural perspective.
METHODS: The study surveyed high school students aged 13-20, a total sample of 2387 adolescents from randomly selected classes in urban and metropolitan areas from Szeged (Hungary), Lublin and Warsaw (Pol

Amyloids are protein aggregates with the cross-β structure. The interest in amyloids is explained, on the one hand, by their role in the development of socially significant human neurodegenerative diseases, and on the other hand, by the discovery of functional amyloids, whose formation is an integral part of cellular processes. To date, more than a hundred proteins with the amyloid or amyloid-like properties have been identified. Studying the structure of amyloid aggregates has revealed a wide variety of protein conformations. In the review, we discuss the diversity of protein folds in the amy

Housing is an important social determinant of physical and mental health. Transgender and gender non-conforming individuals (T/GNCI) face a unique constellation of discrimination and compromised social services, putting them at risk for housing insecurity, homelessness, and its associated public health concerns. This study explores housing insecurity among T/GNCI in New Orleans, LA, where the infrastructural landscape is marked by an underinvestment in housing stock and disaster capitalism. In-depth interviews were conducted with T/GNCI (n = 17) living in New Orleans, identified through purpos

Although people with higher social anxiety (HSA) appear particularly vulnerable to alcohol-related problems it remains unclear why people with HSA experience such problems. One possibility is that HSA people's drinking behavior is influenced by their beliefs about others' drinking (i.e., descriptive norms) and/or others' approval of drinking (i.e., injunctive norms). The current study investigated the relationship between social anxiety, alcohol-related problems, drinking frequency and quantity, and descriptive and injunctive norms. The sample consisted of current drinkers with clinically elev

Adolescents treated in clinical settings for drug use problems are often observed to have low self-esteem. This has led some researchers to the belief that mood or personality characteristics of adolescents predispose them to drug use. However, longitudinal field studies have failed to confirm a direct relationship between low self-esteem and substance abuse (Petraitis et al. 1995). Evidently, if an important causal relationship exists between self-esteem and drug use in the nonclinical adolescent population, it is complex and mediated by other factors. To address this issue, explanatory theor

INTRODUCTION: There is an increased risk of hazardous alcohol use following metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS). Identifying risk factors of hazardous alcohol use, particularly factors that may differentiate risk among those with regular postoperative alcohol consumption, would inform postoperative monitoring.
METHOD: Participants (N = 100) who were up to 5 years post-MBS and were consuming alcohol at least 2-3 times per month completed an assessment as part of a larger study. Measures assessed hazardous alcohol use, drinking motives, psychiatric symptoms, and disordered eating behaviors.

In the UK, girls are consistently found to have lower subjective well-being and higher rates of anxiety disorders/depression compared to boys. While the reasons for these gender disparities are complex, how girls conceptualize, experience, and "perform" femininity may be one pathway which exacerbates psychological stress. To explore this hypothesis, we conducted an in-depth exploratory study to examine how norms and experiences of femininity among seven adolescent girls aged 16-17 from London, England (external factors), relate to their behaviors and psychological experiences (internal factors

OBJECTIVE: Excessive alcohol consumption and its consequences among college women continues despite prevention efforts. One common consequence, alcohol-related blackouts (ARBs), are periods of alcohol-activated anterograde amnesia. The purpose of the current project is to extend the ARB and drinking motive literature by examining their relationship over time.
METHOD: A sample of 424 women (88.9% White) completed online surveys assessing their ARBs and drinking motives weekly for 10 weeks. A series of hierarchical generalized linear models were estimated to examine the between-person and withi

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have evidenced that rumination and drinking motives may mediate the association between depressive symptoms and alcohol outcomes. The present study cross-culturally examined whether a similar mediation model may extend to marijuana. Specifically, we tested distinct rumination facets (problem-focused thoughts, counterfactual thinking, repetitive thoughts, and anticipatory thoughts) and marijuana use motives (social, coping, expansion, conformity, enhancement) as double-mediators of the paths from depressive symptoms to marijuana outcomes (use and consequences).

From 2010 to 2014, HIV diagnoses among Latino men who have sex with other men (LMSM) have increased by 14%, while diagnoses declined by 11% among white, non-Latino MSM. This health disparity is in part due to exposure to other LMSM with undiagnosed HIV infections. To effectively engage LMSM who are unaware of their serostatus, profiles of men differing in theorized determinants of HIV testing must be considered. In this retrospective study, we examined data from 546 LMSM to investigate whether hypothesized individual- (traditional masculine gender role conformity; sexual identity development s

It is difficult to trace full details of the path which irregular or illegal immigrants follow when seeking assistance in the network of the various hospital departments and health structures. The aim of this work was to analyze the health needs of immigrant people by reviewing the types of treatment given to them in the day-hospital of our Department of Migration Medicine. Our study analyzed day-hospital admissions between 2003 and 2009. The patient charts used for managing day-hospital activity were adopted in 2002 in conformity with the "OSI project". From these it is possible to draw up a

OBJECTIVE: Research indicates that heavy alcohol use is increasingly prevalent among college young adult women and is associated with a range of negative health outcomes. To expand upon prior quantitative research examining the influence of distinct feminine norms and cultural factors on college women's alcohol consumption, the present study seeks to develop a comprehensive, in-depth understanding of these factors through a qualitative approach, providing deeper insight into the cultural, gender-relevant and normative influences shaping college women's heavy drinking behaviors.

Findings on the relationship between anxiety symptoms and hazardous alcohol use across adolescence and young adulthood has been mixed. Evidence suggests that anxiety may function as either a risk or protective factor, depending on the age examined. Moderating biological and psychological factors may help explain these age-related differences. To clarify the developmental nature of the anxiety-alcohol relationship, this study examined both cross-sectional and longitudinal associations across seven timepoints, spanning mean ages 13.4 to 20.5 years. Potential biological (sex) and psychological (d

Introduction: Researchers posit that adherence to traditional masculine norms can contribute to college men's disproportionate risk for alcohol use and consequences; however, historically they have measured general masculine norms (e.g., winning, risk-taking) that are distal to alcohol use behaviors. Alcohol-specific masculine norms of excess (e.g., "A real man can drink a lot") and control (e.g., "A real man knows when he has had enough to drink and is able to stop") are conceptually more proximal to alcohol use behaviors and thus allow for a more nuanced examination of how masculinity relate

The main function of the medical-psychological assessment to evaluate fitness to drive (FTD) is to safeguard the community against risks posed by drivers who, owing to psycho-physical disease, personality disturbances, abuse of psychotropic substances or drugs, can be a hazard to safety on the roads. In the context of psychodiagnostic investigations, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2 (MMPI-2) test is the gold standard tool supporting clinical assessments conducted to evaluate a subject's capacity to predict her/his own actions, attitudes, risk propensity, level of conformity to

OBJECTIVES: As members of a gender minority, transgender individuals face many challenges. Many experience distress, depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation related to gender non-conformity and transphobia. Stress and trauma may contribute to the development of fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome, characterised by widespread pain and fatigue. The prevalence of FM among transgenders is not known.
METHODS: Transgender participants were recruited at a specialised clinic. Questionnaires included the Widespread Pain Index (WPI), the Symptom Severity Score (SSS) and the SF-36. Data concerning hormonal tre
