Social Determinants of Health: A Missing Link in Emergency Medicine Training.

The health of a population depends upon several factors, including disease, public health initiatives, and the social determinants of health (SDH). These factors often converge in the emergency department (ED) where the impact of social conditions such as homelessness, low-literacy, and poverty lead to recidivism and may contribute to provider burnout. Inclusion of SDH topics in EM residency curricula can provide needed background information and effective strategies for coping with these patients in the clinical setting. Exercises that simulate poverty, the development of and familiarity with

From exclusion to inclusion: How spiritual leadership shapes workplace relationships.

BackgroundWorkplace ostracism is a negative social stressor that is associated with psychological distress, work stress, and poor employee well-being. Leadership behavior is an important determinant of social inclusion in the workplace; yet there is a lack of evidence on how and under what conditions spiritual leadership can counteract ostracism, especially in a highly regulated work context.ObjectiveThis study examines the association between spiritual leadership and workplace ostracism, with justice orientation explored as a moderating variable in this association. Additionally, job social s…

The Double Bind of Precarious Work: Creating Need and Undermining Support.

For most adults in the U.S., participation in the labor force is a normative expectation and a pre-requisite for social acceptance and inclusion. Yet, the conditions of low-wage work can breed social isolation by interfering with supportive social ties at and outside of work. Drawing on survey data from The Shift Project, we examine the complex interplay between precarious working conditions and supportive social ties and illuminate a vicious cycle faced by low-wage workers. Precarious work schedule conditions are associated with reduced perceptions of support from social ties and act as a mec

Homelessness, organ donation, transplantation, and a call for equity in the United States.

While social justice is a pillar that society seeks to uphold, in the area of organ transplantation, social justice, equity, and inclusion fail in the unbefriended and undomiciled population. Due to lack of social support of the homeless population, such status often renders these individuals ineligible to be organ recipients. Though it can be argued that organ donation by an unbefriended, undomciled patient benefits the greater good, there is clear inequity in the fact that homeless individuals are denied transplants due to inadequate social support. To illustrate such social breakdown, we de

University student mental health before and after implementation of a mental health strategy: a repeated cross-sectional study from Australia.

Studies have consistently indicated that university students are at risk of experiencing poor mental health. This study analysed survey wave … GBTQI+ status, current health condition, and current financial stress. Protective factors were age, social inclusion, social acceptance, and satisfaction. Limited progress on key indicators may be due to the COVID-19 pandemic and deterioration in economic conditions. The findings suggest universities can support student mental health by making students feel includ …

Parasympathetic cardio-regulation during social interactions in individuals with obesity-The influence of negative body image.

Individuals with obesity in Western societies often face weight-related stigmatization and social exclusion. Recurrent exposure to prejudice and negative social feedback alters one's behavior in future social interactions. In this study, we aimed to investigate autonomic nervous system and affective responses to social interactions in individuals with obesity. Women and men with (n = 56) and without (n = 56) obesity participated in episodes of social inclusion and social exclusion using a virtual ball-tossing game. During the experiment, heart rate was measured and parasympathetic activity (ov…

Development of Deaf Adults with Intellectual Disability in a Therapeutic Living Community.

People with intellectual disabilities who are deaf face obstacles participating in social environments that do not take into account their need for accessible visual communication. In the present case series, we describe the development of the adaptive skills profiles of eight participants in a fully inclusive therapeutic living community, designed specifically for people with developmental disabilities who are deaf and focused on supporting communication, social relationships, conflict resolution, and work satisfaction. Adaptive skills ratings collected at enrollment and twelve years later su

The impact of social variables in preclinical models of cocaine abuse.

At present, there are no US Food and Drug Administration-approved treatments for cocaine use disorders. One consideration for this lack of treatment efficacy stems from the appropriate use of animal models. The premise of this commentary is that social behavior needs to be incorporated in animal models of cocaine use disorder. The goal of this commentary is to describe some of the strengths and limitations of recent preclinical animal models of cocaine abuse which have incorporated social behavior. There are many ways to include social variables into preclinical research, and the study design

Protective Factors of the Longitudinal Association Between Discrimination and Mental Health Among Mexican-Origin Youth.

OBJECTIVE: The negative effects of discrimination on mental health are well established. Few longitudinal studies have investigated protective factors that could mitigate these effects for youth of Mexican origin in the United States. This 3-wave longitudinal study examined individual-, family-, peer-, and neighborhood-level protective factors attenuating the effect of discrimination-related stress on youth depressive and anxiety symptoms. METHOD: A total of surveyed 344 Mexican-origin youths (ages 12-15) from 2 Midwestern counties were surveyed longitudinally over 3 annual waves. Youths comp

Social Internet Use by People With Intellectual Disabilities: A Systematic Review and Thematic Synthesis of Qualitative Studies.

INTRODUCTION: Although existing research has explored both the benefits and risks associated with social internet use amongst people with intellectual disabilities (ID), a comprehensive understanding of the underlying reasons for this engagement is still lacking. This systematic review synthesizes literature investigating the reasons for social internet use amongst people with ID. METHODS: Eight electronic databases (Cinahl, Cochrane, Embase, ERIC, Google Scholar, Medline, PsycINFO and Web of Science) were systematically searched in June 2023 and November 2024 and screened using active machin

Social care occupational therapy and learning disabilities: professional perspectives on communication, collaboration and making a difference.

PURPOSE: Adults with learning disabilities experience a poorer quality of life than the general population. Social care can critically support such adults and their informal carers, but limited literature exists about occupational therapy provision. This study explored the extent to which social care occupational therapists support communication and collaboration, and make a difference. METHODS: Eight social care occupational therapists were recruited through professional networks. Online interviews were undertaken using topic guides co-designed with professionals and experts by experience. R

[Mental health and social vulnerability. The case of women living on the street at Buenos Aires, Argentine].

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this research is to investigate the possible relationship between homelessness and mental pathology in a population of women housed in a Social Inclusion Center of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina. There could be a clinical bias that characterizes homelessness as a consequence of a mental illness. METHODS: A group of women between 18 and 65 years of age, socially assisted in the Social Inclusion Center for women alone or with minor children “Azucena Villaflor” of the City of Buenos Aires, who in turn consult or have consulted in the past about their …

A Lifesaving View of Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation: Patient Experience of Social Death Before and After Face, Hand, and Larynx Transplant.

INTRODUCTION: Most solid organ transplantation is viewed as lifesaving, whereas vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) has been viewed as life enhancing. This article challenges the latter and argues that "social death" evident in severe face, hand, and larynx disfigurement can be potentially treated via VCA. Social death (from a social science perspective) consists of a combination of 7 components: social isolation, loneliness, ostracism, loss of personhood, change of role and identity, harm, and disfigurement. METHODS: In February 2016, PubMed and Google were searched for case rep

[Efficacy of a cognitive-behavioral group therapy in patients with fear of blushing].

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown to be effective in the treatment of social anxiety disorders (SAD). However, fear of social blushing is almost never measured as a therapeutic outcome variable, even though some data suggest that this dimension constitutes a specific syndrome in social anxiety spectrum, justifying specific therapeutic strategies. For these reasons, we developed a group therapy program including a combination of task concentration training (TCT) and other CBT strategies targeting fear of blushing. AIM: We aimed to investigate the efficacy of this progr

Social and Religious Networks with Respect to the Health Behaviors of African American Women: A Systematic Review.

The aim of this systematic mixed studies review was to examine how social networks influence physical activity and dietary patterns among African American women. We searched PUBMED, CINAHL, JSTOR, SocioIndex, Medline, Cochrane Library, sportDISCUS, and PsycINFO to review articles published between Jan 1, 2007, and July 1, 2021. Only 23 studies met the inclusion criteria. All studies were conducted in the US. Social support received from family members, friends, and churches was found to positively influence physical activity and/or dietary patterns among African American women. An inconsistent

Serving Differently: Pioneering the Inclusion of Autism in the Greek Military.

Autism spectrum disorders are typically considered a disqualifying factor for military service due to their high demands on the environment. This case study describes the implementation of a social skills training program for a military candidate with Asperger's syndrome. The intervention employed four strategies: Social Stories, which used structured scenarios to teach appropriate social responses; Social Autopsy, which analyzed real-life interactions to identify strengths and areas for improvement; Role-Playing, which provided guided practice of social interactions; and a Cardboard Game, des

The role of whole network analysis in understanding health behaviours: a systematic review of smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and diet.

BACKGROUND: Health behaviours such as smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and dietary habits are not only individual choices but are influenced by social interactions and relational contexts. Recently, Whole Network Analysis (WNA) has become a powerful methodological tool to explore how these behaviours spread and become established within social systems. Unlike egocentric approaches, which focus on individuals' personal networks, WNA captures the entire structure of social relations within a defined population. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of empirical studies applying WNA

Parkinson's research with inclusion, diversity and equity (PRIDE): examining Parkinson's disease symptoms among LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ adults.

INTRODUCTION: Nearly four million LGBTQ+ adults aged 50 and older live in the U.S., with up to 40,000 currently living with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, little is known about PD-related symptoms in this population. METHODS: From 2022 to 2025, we conducted a national cross-sectional study using a convenience sample of LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ individuals living with PD (n = 254). We administered validated PD and health-related measures to examine physical, mental and social health symptoms. Bivariate and regression models examined differences in symptom burden between LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+

Stigma as social comorbidity in epilepsy.

Empirical evidence confirms both the pervasiveness and the significant impact of stigma among people with epilepsy (PWE). Despite being one of the most extensively studied neurological disorders, epilepsy continues to carry a disproportionate social burden across cultures and historical periods. Stigma is not only a psychological consequence but also a chronic social determinant of health that negatively affects quality of life, social participation, and long-term outcomes. Recent research highlights the multidimensional nature of epilepsy-related stigma, including internalized, enacted, and i
