Social status and the quality of care for adult people with type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus--a population-based study.

UNLABELLED: The objective of this study was to assess the degree of diabetes care and education achieved for Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus at the community level in relation to social status and to elucidate potential pathways that mediate any social class gradient. A population-based sample of 684 adults with Type I diabetes (41% women, mean +/- SD age 36 +/- 11, diabetes duration 18 +/- 11 years) in the district of North-Rhine (9.5 million inhabitants), Germany, were examined in their homes using a mobile ambulance. RESULTS: HbA1c (normal 4.3-6.1%) 8.0 +/- 1.5%, incidence of

Subjective social status, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease among older adults in india: Roles of depression, insomnia, and urban-rural differences.

This study examined associations between subjective social status (SSS), hypertension, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in older adults in India. We also examined whether depressive and insomnia symptoms moderated these associations and whether patterns differed between rural and urban-dwelling older Indians. Multivariable logistic regression models utilized data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (2017-18), including 31,389 adults aged 60+. Higher SSS was associated with higher odds of hypertension. Depressive symptoms were linked with higher odds of hypertension and CVD, while insom

Health Status in Informal Urban Settlements of Barishal, Bangladesh: Social Determinants, Environmental Risks, and Treatment-Seeking Behavior as Structural Drivers.

BACKGROUND: Rapid urbanization in low- and middle-income countries has intensified health inequalities within informal settlements, yet empirical analyses often isolate behavioral factors from structural determinants. In Bangladesh, unplanned urban growth has produced vulnerable settlements where social inequalities intersect with infrastructural deficits, particularly in secondary coastal cities such as Barishal, a climate-sensitive region characterized by migration, poverty, and weak municipal capacity. AIM: This study examines the socio-demographic and socioeconomic patterning of self-repo

Social support, financial status, and depression among French healthcare workers one year after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Early studies on factors associated with depressive symptoms among healthcare workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic were primarily related to working conditions and exposure to the pandemic. Despite the socio-economic impact of the pandemic, research focusing on factors related to social support and financial situation was scarce. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the association between HCWs' financial and social support, and the presence of depressive symptoms in France one year after the pandemic's onset. METHODS: This study used data from a cross-sectional, online, vo

Mediation Effect of Social Distancing on Neonatal Vitamin D Status and Related Clinical Outcomes during the Coronavirus Disease-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: We analyzed the impact of social distancing (SD) on vitamin D status and associated morbidity in neonates during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. METHODS: Serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD) and clinical characteristics of newborn infants before (2019) and during SD (2021) were compared. RESULTS: A total of 526 neonates (263 in 2019 and 263 in 2021) were included. The rate of vitamin D deficiency in neonates (47.1% vs. 35.4 %, p = 0.008) decreased and the rate of maternal vitamin D intake increased (6.8% vs. 37.6%, p < 0.001), respectively, during SD compared

Communication challenges in social isolation, subjective cognitive decline, and mental health status in older adults: A scoping review (2019-2021).

PURPOSE: Through an evolutionary concept analysis, social isolation (SI) was defined as lack of social belonging and engagement with others, minimal number of social contacts, and insufficient quality relationships. This definition represents broader understanding of most contributing factors to SI and supports the concepts of reduced communication and socialization experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic served to heighten this problem, including communication challenges, and brought negative outcomes of SI to light. The overall research question examined the impact of

Does Low Subjective Social Status Predict Cognitive Decline in Chinese Older Adults? A 4-Year Longitudinal Study From Hong Kong.

OBJECTIVE: Subjective social status (SSS), one's self-perceived social position, encompasses not only concrete socio-economic (SES) factors (e.g., income) but also intangible aspects of status (e.g., social capital). In recent years, there has been increasing research interest in SSS as a predictor of a vast array of health outcomes but very few studies examining effects on cognitive functioning. This study's main objective was to examine the association between SSS and long-term cognitive decline in older Chinese adults. DESIGN: A 4-year longitudinal study. SETTING: Hong Kong, China. PARTI

Associations between social norms and at-risk status for e-cigarette use: A sex-stratified analysis of Texas sixth-grade students.

BACKGROUND: E-cigarette use remains high among adolescents, underscoring the need to identify targetable risk factors for intervention. This study examines associations between two social norms constructs (prevalence misperceptions and social acceptability) and at-risk status for e-cigarette use among Texas early adolescents. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from the CATCH My Breath study, which included n=1032 Texas sixth graders. Students who had ever used or were susceptible to using e-cigarettes were categorized as at-risk for long-term use. Susceptibility

The association between life events, social support, and antibody status following thymus-dependent and thymus-independent vaccinations in healthy young adults.

This study determined whether stressful life events and social support were related to antibody status following both thymus-dependent and thymus-independent vaccinations. Life events in the previous year and customary social support were measured in 57 healthy students at baseline. Antibody status was also assessed at baseline and at five weeks and five months following vaccination with the trivalent influenza vaccine and the meningococcal A+C polysaccharide vaccine. Taking into account baseline antibody titre, high life events scores prior to vaccination were associated with lower responses

INTRODUCTION: In the post-pandemic era, the world has witnessed profound transformations with economic, social, and lifestyle changes. In such a special period, Generation Z is also undergoing unique trials. While confronting multifaceted and complex challenges, they also have positive adaptations, including improved psychological capital (PSY) and core self-evaluations (CSE). As the life and academic satisfaction for Generation Z have become an increasingly critical issue for higher education, we wanted to seek new insight into the reasons which influence the life and academic satisfaction fo

Social interaction and functional status among community-dwelling older adults in Japan: a longitudinal study during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have shown that social relationships positively contribute to functional status. However, studies comparing the influence under changing social circumstances are still limited. Consequently, this study investigated how social interaction influenced long-term functional status among older Japanese adults before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A two-wave longitudinal cohort design was used to compare pre-pandemic (2017-2020) and post-pandemic (2020-2023) cohorts. Data were obtained from the Community Empowerment and Care study in T-Village, Aichi Prefec

Healthcare utilization following hip fractures based on social vulnerability status in the US: an analysis of 2016-2020 nationwide readmissions data.

INTRODUCTION: Social vulnerability (SV) influences rehabilitation and postoperative care for patients with hip fracture. However, most previous work relies on area-level measures that overlook interindividual variation. The recent adoption of ICD-10 Z-codes allows clinical identification of patient-level SV and may offer a better understanding of its impact. This study aimed to evaluate healthcare utilization, including readmissions, discharge disposition, and length of stay (LOS) in surgically treated hip fracture patients with and without clinically acknowledged SV. METHODS: Adults surgical

Social isolation, socioeconomic status, and development of functional impairments in Chinese older adults aged 70 years and over: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation in older people has been increasingly regarded as a public health issue in the face of rapid population ageing. It is not clear whether social isolation mediates the relationship between socioeconomic status and functional impairment. METHODS: We used data from a cohort of Chinese older people aged 70 or older living in community (n = 1590). Socioeconomic status (SES) was operationalised as highest education attainment, monthly income at baseline and longest held occupation in lifetime. Functional abilities were measured using Barthel's Index for activities of dai

Similarities in client-clinician perceptions of subjective social status and its association to similarities in the quality of working alliance and client anxiety symptoms.

Subjective social status (SSS) has largely been ignored within psychotherapy literature. We investigated the association between similarities in client-clinician perceptions of SSS, similarities in their report of the quality of working alliance, and resultant anxiety symptoms. Participants represented a primarily low-income, culturally diverse sample of 312 clients receiving care from 68 clinicians at 13 outpatient mental health clinics in the Northeastern United States between September 2013 and August 2016. As part of a larger randomized controlled trial, clients and clinicians completed th

Preliminary evidence of the impact of social distancing on psychological status and functional outcomes of patients who underwent robot-assisted radical prostatectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Social distancing is considered the best strategy to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (COronaVIrus Disease 19). We aimed to analyse the effect of 'social distancing' on the emotional state, post-operative pain and functional outcomes of patients undergoing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data of male patients who underwent RARP within the study period (from March to April 2019 [Group A = 27 patients] and from March to April 2020 [Group B = 29 patients]). Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Di

Patterns and Predictors of HIV-Status Disclosure Among Pregnant Women in South Africa: Dimensions of Disclosure and Influence of Social and Economic Circumstances.

HIV-status disclosure may improve psychosocial health and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), but existing insights suffer from methodological limitations. We explored disclosure over time during pregnancy and postpartum among 1347 HIV-positive women in Cape Town. Among 995 women diagnosed HIV-positive before the pregnancy and entering antenatal care (median age 30 years), 95% had disclosed to ≥ 1 individual. In Mokken scale analysis, we observed two separate dimensions of disclosure: disclosure to a male partner, and disclosure to family/community members. Among 352 women diagnosed dur
