Social support is associated with gambling treatment outcomes in pathological gamblers.

Poor social support is a contributory factor in development of addictive disorders, but it has rarely been evaluated in pathological gamblers. This study examined social support in pathological gamblers and its relationship with treatment outcomes. Low baseline social support was associated with increased severity of gambling, family, and psychiatric problems and poorer post-treatment outcomes. Further, social support assessed post-treatment was significantly related to severity of gambling problems at the 12-month follow-up. These findings demonstrate that social support plays an important ro…

Parenting adults who become homeless: variations in stress and social support.

This article focuses on the stressors of parenting an adult child who experiences homelessness. Parents whose adult children become homeless may provide support to this child, but they may also subsequently experience stress and require social support themselves. Findings from this study support the hypothesis that parents who spend more time or money helping their homeless adult offspring experience higher levels of stress. Results also show higher levels of stress among parents who helped with activities of daily living and among parents who worked to prevent harm involving their adult homel…

Alone? Perceived social support and chronic interpersonal difficulties in suicidal elders.

BACKGROUND: Social networks may protect depressed elders against suicidal behavior. However, conflict in important relationships may undermine the sense of social support, potentially negating the protective effects. Thus, we investigated the role of chronic interpersonal difficulties and perceived social support in depressed elders with and without suicidal thoughts and attempts. METHODS: 106 individuals aged 60 years and older participated in this cross-sectional, case-control study. They were placed in three groups: suicidal depressed, non-suicidal depressed and non-depressed. Following a …

Social support and treatment response in older depressed primary care patients.

A previously tested theoretical model that specifies relationships among depression, activities of daily living (ADL) impairment, and social support components was validated with 307 patients aged 60 and older from a multisite effectiveness trial of 3 treatments (antidepressant, placebo, Problem-Solving Treatment) for dysthymia or minor depression in primary care. Participants completed interviews and self-reports at baseline and at 6 and 12 weeks. The short-term, longitudinal data were analyzed with covariance structure modeling techniques. Consistent with the previous model, impairment in AD…

Social support reduces cardiovascular reactivity to psychological challenge: a laboratory model.

In this study we investigated the effects of nonevaluative social interaction on the cardiovascular response to psychological challenge. Thirty-nine college-age females appeared accompanied ("Friend" condition) or unaccompanied ("Alone" condition) to an experimental laboratory. In the Friend condition, partners were present while the subject participated in two laboratory tasks, and the partners' evaluation potential was minimized by design. Subjects in the Friend condition showed reduced heart rate reactivity to both tasks, relative to the Alone group, an attenuated task-related systolic bloo

Can hostility interfere with the health benefits of giving and receiving social support? The impact of cynical hostility on cardiovascular reactivity during social support interactions among friends.

BACKGROUND: Both social support and hostility have been reliably associated with important health outcomes including coronary heart disease (CHD). One potential pathway by which these variables may influence CHD is via their impact on cardiovascular reactivity (CVR). Although social support has been generally associated with beneficial effects on cardiovascular functioning, the cynicism and mistrust among hostile individuals may prevent them from benefiting from the support process during times of stress. PURPOSE AND METHOD: The present study examined if level of hostility influenced CVR when…

Differences in Health and Social Support between Homeless Men and Women Entering Permanent Supportive Housing.

BACKGROUND: Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is the leading intervention to end chronic homelessness. Little is known, however, about gender differences, including potential disparities in physical and mental health and social support, that might inform services available through PSH. METHODS: This study included 421 homeless adults, at least 39 years old, English- or Spanish-speaking, who were moving into PSH through 26 different agencies in the Los Angeles area. RESULTS: Compared with men entering PSH, homeless women (28% of the sample) were younger (p < .01), less likely to have achieve…

Social support, affectivity, and the quality of life of patients and their support-givers prior to stem cell transplantation.

PURPOSE: To determine differences and interdependencies between patients and their support-givers prior to PBSCT. METHOD: Patients and their principal support-givers completed the Illness- Specific Social Support Scale (ISSS), the Profile of Mood States, and the EORTC QLQ-C30. RESULTS: One hundred fifty-five of 200 eligible patients replied. They nominated spouse/partner (70.6%), friends, and children as principal support source. Patients receiving social support from spouses reported a better HRQoL than patients who nominated other persons as the principal source of social support. Patients…

Do Survivor and Supporter Perceptions of Supporter Helpfulness and Social Reactions Affect Survivor PTSD Symptoms?

Prior studies indicate that sexual assault survivor posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is influenced by the social reactions (e.g., belief and blame) and perceived helpfulness (e.g., empathy, effectiveness) of informal support providers (SPs; i.e., family, friends, and partners). This study examined how SPs' social reactions and perceived helpfulness impacted female sexual assault survivor PTSD among an ethnically diverse sample of 432 pairs of sexual assault survivors and their SPs. Path models were run separately for survivors and SPs. In the survivor model, SP's perceived ineffectiveness

Real-Life Emotional Support, Social-Media-Based Emotional Support, and Loneliness Among US Adults: A Nationally Representative Study.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is associated with all-cause mortality among US adults. Although social media is increasingly used for alleviating loneliness among adults, the relative potency of real-life emotional support and emotional support from social media to alleviate loneliness is not known. OBJECTIVE: To assess associations between real-life emotional support versus social-media-based emotional support and loneliness among a nationally representative sample of US adults. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: We assessed 1512 US adults ages 30-70 years recruited in July and August of 2023. MAIN MEASURES

Examining the association between social appearance anxiety and perceived social support in adolescents with butane explosion-induced burns.

BACKGROUND: Butane misuse in adolescents causes severe burns with long-term effects, but psychosocial impacts like social appearance anxiety (SAA) and its link to perceived social support are poorly understood, and relapse/craving predictors are unknown. This study aimed to assess SAA, identify factors, examine SAA-support association, and determine relapse predictors at 4 weeks post-injury. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 48 adolescents in Northeast China who suffered from severe butane-related burns. At the 4-week mark, the participants were classified into the Non-relapse…

Social stress task with parental support or self-instruction decreases negative cognitions in children with social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is highly prevalent in childhood, yet research on cognitive processes in children with SAD is limited. This study examined anticipatory rumination (AR), self-focused attention (SFA), and post-event processing (PEP) in children with SAD and healthy controls (HC), and the impact of possible influencing factors (two conditions: parental support, self-instruction). Based on adult cognitive models, we hypothesized that children with SAD would report more negative and similar positive AR, more internal SFA, similar external focus, more negative and similar positive PEP

Micro ad-hoc Health Social Networks (uHSN). Design and evaluation of a social-based solution for patient support.

OBJECTIVE: To contribute the design, development, and assessment of a new concept: Micro ad hoc Health Social Networks (uHSN), to create a social-based solution for supporting patients with chronic disease. DESIGN: After in-depth fieldwork and intensive co-design over a 4-year project following Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), this paper contributes a new paradigm of uHSN, defining two interaction areas (the "backstage", the sphere invisible to the final user, where processes that build services take place; and the "onstage", the visible part that includes the patients and relat

Social support, social undermining, and acute clinical pain in women: Mediational pathways of negative cognitive appraisal and emotion.

Women may be disproportionately vulnerable to acute pain, potentially due to their social landscape. We examined whether positive and negative social processes (social support and social undermining) are associated with acute pain and if the processes are linked to pain via negative cognitive appraisal and emotion (pain catastrophizing, hyperarousal, anger). Psychosocial variables were assessed in inner-city women (N = 375) presenting to an Emergency Department with acute pain. The latent cognitive-emotion variable fully mediated social undermining and support effects on pain, with undermining…
