Prodromal or Factitious Psychosis: A Cautionary Tale in the Era of Increasing Social Media Use by Vulnerable Individuals.

Research on the prodromal phase of schizophrenia has been ongoing for several decades and, more recently, findings from this research are being incorporated into everyday psychiatric practice, such as the use of interviews to evaluate prodromal symptomatology. This evolution is happening in the midst of an explosion of social media use by teenagers and young adults, increasing the exposure of youth to portrayals of psychiatric experiences. For example, reports from around the world of "TIK-TOK tics" emphasize the role of social media in the "creation" of psychiatric symptoms. This case report

Social support network factors associated with verbal fluency among vulnerable persons living with HIV.

Vulnerable persons living with HIV (PLWH) are at high risk of cognitive impairment and challenges accessing quality social support in later life. Impaired verbal fluency (VF), a cognitive domain linked to HIV, could impede social support associated with health and well-being for already vulnerable PLWH. We examined the structure of social support, using latent class analysis, and the associations among quantity, specific forms and quality of social support and VF among PLWH. Participants enrolled in the BEACON study (n = 383) completed the Controlled Oral Word Association test (COWAT) and a so

Impact of neighborhood deprivation and social vulnerability on long-term outcomes and desire for revision in patients with craniosynostosis.

OBJECTIVE: The authors utilized the area deprivation index (ADI), a validated composite measure of socioeconomic disadvantage, and the social vulnerability index (SVI) to examine whether differences in neighborhood deprivation impact interventions and outcomes among patients with craniosynostosis. METHODS: Patients who underwent craniosynostosis repair between 2012 and 2017 were included. The authors collected data about demographic characteristics, comorbidities, follow-up visits, interventions, complications, desire for revision, and speech, developmental, and behavioral outcomes. National …

Psychological and Social Vulnerability in Spaniards' Quality of Life in the Face of COVID-19: Age and Gender Results.

Following the serious health situation in Spain and around the world in 2020 and 2021 stemming from COVID-19, this paper examines how the most vulnerable groups (in social and health terms) in Spanish society suffered the worst impacts on their quality of life during the pandemic. The review of the literature and publications released by the health authorities highlight the high number of cases of illness and death due to COVID-19; however, there are no studies about how it has affected aspects of citizens' daily lives, considering some of their sociodemographic characteristics such as age and

HIV-sensitive social protection for vulnerable young women in East and Southern Africa: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Social protection programmes are considered HIV-sensitive when addressing risk, vulnerability or impact of HIV infection. Socio-economic interventions, like livelihood and employability programmes, address HIV vulnerabilities like poverty and gender inequality. We explored the HIV-sensitivity of socio-economic interventions for unemployed and out-of-school young women aged 15 to 30 years, in East and Southern Africa, a key population for HIV infection. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review using a narrative synthesis method and the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool for quality ap

What Lies Beyond Neuroticism? An Examination of the Unique Contributions of Social-Cognitive Vulnerabilities to Internalizing Disorders.

Extensive research has identified various social-cognitive vulnerabilities for internalizing disorders. However, few studies have assessed multiple disorders simultaneously, so it is unclear whether these vulnerabilities are transdiagnostic or specific risk factors. Their unique associations with disorders are also uncertain, given that they correlate strongly with neuroticism and one other. Psychiatric outpatients completed self-report and interview measures of six disorders (depression, generalized anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, social anxiety, panic, obsessive-compulsive d

Social, sexual and structural factors shaping HIV vulnerability among transgender women in Mali: a qualitative focus group study.

Transgender women (TGW) in Mali face discrimination and stigma, possibly exacerbating HIV vulnerability and limiting access to health services. We identified HIV vulnerability factors among TGW by exploring perceptions and experiences of TGW from urban, peri-urban and rural areas, and those of community workers, using six focus groups (n = 44) and a data thematic content analysis. The analysis highlighted that TGW's sexual networks included their cisgender wives and multiple male partners; these networks were shaped by social expectations to marry women and financial pressures leading to trans

Economic vulnerability or social inequality? A global comparative analysis of their relative impact on chronic kidney disease burden.

PURPOSE: To compare the impacts of persistent social inequality (Palma ratio) and conjunctural economic vulnerability (unemployment) on chronic kidney disease (CKD) burden and to test whether hypertension mediates inequality's association. METHODS: We analyzed a 68-country panel (1990-2023), modeling the natural log of prevalent CKD cases as a function of the Palma ratio and total unemployment, adjusting for diabetes prevalence, hypertension prevalence, hospital beds per 10,000, and population size. Pooled OLS with HC3 robust standard errors was estimated across lags up to 10 years. To reduce

Social Vulnerability, Perceived Stigma, and Multidimensional Frailty Among Older People Living with HIV: A Structural Equation Modeling Analysis.

This study explored the relationships among social vulnerability, perceived stigma, and multidimensional frailty among older people living with HIV (PWH) and examined the mediating roles of loneliness and perceived stigma in these relationships. A cross-sectional study was performed among older PWH, between December 2022 and October 2023. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, perceived stigma, social vulnerability (including social isolation and loneliness), and multidimensional frailty were collected and analyzed. Social vulnerability and perceived stigma were significantly positively cor…

Social Vulnerability as a Neighborhood-Level Determinant of Pancreatic Cancer Survivorship: A National Analysis of Veterans Affairs Patients.

BACKGROUND: Veterans Affairs (VA) patients participate within the largest USA equal-access healthcare system, though still experience cancer mortality disparities by social determinants. The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI)-measuring community poverty, minority status, housing, and transportation-has delineated gradients in cancer care utilization and outcomes. We therefore assessed relationships between SVI and mortality in veterans with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Records of patients with stage I-III PDAC diagnosed January 2005-December 2018 were abstracte…

Intersecting risks: A longitudinal analysis of climate exposure, social vulnerability, and mental health in the Texas Gulf Coast.

This study investigates the evolving intersection of social vulnerability, climate exposure, and mental health distress in Harris County, Texas, from 2014 to 2022, with projections through 2030. Using census tract-level data and integrating indicators from the CDC Social Vulnerability Index, climate exposure metrics, and mental health outcomes, we developed predictive models to forecast future trends. Results indicate a significant rise in overall social vulnerability-from a score of 8.16 in 2022 to 8.87 by 2030, driven by increasing poverty, extreme heat, flooding, and deteriorating mental he…

Association of social vulnerability index and masking adherence among children enrolled in COVID-19 community research partnership study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with high social vulnerability index (SVI) have poorer outcomes with COVID-19. Masking reduces transmission of COVID-19 among children, but how SVI plays a role in masking behavior is unknown. We aimed to measure the association of SVI with masking adherence among children during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a multi-site, prospective syndromic surveillance study among children aged 2 - 17 years in the Southeastern United States by daily electronic surveys which solicited symptoms of COVID-19-like illness, infection with or exposure to SARS-CoV-2, maskin…

Travel distance and social vulnerability index: Impact on liver-related mortality among patients with end-stage liver disease.

INTRODUCTION: The reasons for the geographic disparities in liver-related mortality across the US remain ill-defined. We sought to investigate the impact of travel distance to liver transplantation (LT) programs and social vulnerability on county differences in liver-related mortality. METHODS: Data on LT registrants were obtained from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients Standard Analytic Files (SRTR SAFs) between 2004 and 2019. Liver-related mortality data were obtained from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC …

Measure and spatial identification of social vulnerability, exposure and risk to natural hazards in Japan using open data.

Understanding the location of risk to natural hazards, namely the areas of high exposure and vulnerability is a major priority that was identified by the Sendai framework for Disaster Reduction 2015-2030 in order to reach substantial reduction of disaster risk. It is also a necessary decision-making tool for disaster mitigation policy-makers in Japan and around the world. This paper successfully develops a simple methodology using only open data to build the first large-scale (whole country), fine resolution (sub-municipal level) social vulnerability analysis in the context of five different t…

[Active ageing, decreasing capability, social disadvantage and age stereotypes: a contribution to resilience and vulnerability in older adulthood].

The starting-point of this contribution is the concept of active ageing as it has been propagated by the World Health Organization since the 1990s. Relationships between subjective experience of the potentials and barriers involved in leading a productive and responsible life, decreases in capability, small financial resources, and social isolation are analysed in a total sample of 1,275 participants. Based on this analysis, two subsamples are selected: a first characterised by a high level of risk, i.e. low opportunities for active ageing, and a second characterised by a low level of risk, i.

Social vulnerability and severe COVID-19 in pregnant women: an ecological study in Pernambuco State, Brazil, 2020-2021.

This study analyzed the association between social vulnerability indicators and the incidence rate of severe COVID-19 in pregnant women in Pernambuco State, Brazil, between 2020 and 2021. It is an ecological study that assessed severe cases of COVID-19 in pregnant women reported to the Influenza Surveillance System in Brazil. To determine such association, the zero adjusted Gamma (ZAGA) regression model was applied due to the large number of zeros in the response variable. Variables available in the Demographic Census were used, representing socioenvironmental conditions, household characteris…
