Community-led cross-sectional study of social and employment circumstances, HIV and associated factors amongst female sex workers in South Africa: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: In South Africa, female sex workers (FSWs) are perceived to play a pivotal role in the country's HIV epidemic. Understanding their health status and risk factors for adverse health outcomes is foundational for developing evidence-based health care for this population. OBJECTIVE: Describe the methodology used to successfully implement a community-led study of social and employment circumstances, HIV and associated factors amongst FSWs in South Africa. METHOD: A community-centric, cross-sectional, survey of 3,005 adult FSWs was conducted (January-July 2019) on 12 Sex Work (SW) prog

Exploring the Association Between Depression and Social and Biobehavioral HIV Risk Factors Among Female Sex Workers in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, South Africa.

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of depression among female sex workers (FSW) in an urban coastal city in South Africa, and to explore the relationship between depression and HIV-related social and biobehavioral determinants. A cross-sectional respondent-driven sampling study was conducted with FSW (n = 410), including a sociobehavioral questionnaire, PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) based assessment of depression, and biological testing for HIV and syphilis. The prevalence of HIV in the sample was 64.1%. The estimated prevalence of depression was 28.8%. Depression wa

Physical and Social Factors Differentiating Acute and Chronic Low Back Pain Among Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprise Workers in Japan: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Low back pain is common and negatively impacts quality of life and workplace productivity. However, few studies have focused on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) where risk factors are prevalent. This cross-sectional study examined the association and structural relationships between physical and social factors in low back pain among Japanese SME workers. We analyzed survey data collected between April 2021 and August 2022 from 762 SME workers aged 18-65 years in Shimane, Japan, to assess acute (less than 3 months) and chronic low back pain using a self-reported questionnaire. Workpla

The Family Talk Intervention Among Families Affected by Severe Illness: Hospital Social Workers' Experiences of Facilitators and Barriers to its Use in Clinical Practice.

Hospital social workers (HSW) play an important role in health care, providing psychosocial support to families affected by severe illness, and having palliative care needs involving dependent children. However, there are few evidence-based family interventions for HSWs to apply when supporting these families. The Family Talk intervention (FTI), a psychosocial family-based intervention, was therefore evaluated in an effectiveness-implementation study. Within the study, HSWs were educated and trained in the use of FTI in clinical practice. This study examined HSWs' experiences of barriers and f…

Reducing stigma towards people living with HIV and people who inject drugs using social norms theory: An online study with Australian health care workers.

BACKGROUND: Despite extensive evidence regarding the negative effects of stigma experienced by people living with HIV (PLHIV) and people who inject drugs within health care settings, comparatively little evidence exists regarding the effectiveness of initiatives to reduce this stigma. METHOD: This study developed and assessed brief online interventions based on social norms theory with a sample of Australian health care workers (n=653). Participants were randomly allocated to either 1) HIV intervention group, or 2) injecting drug use intervention group. They completed baseline measures of the

Social and structural determinants of health associated with police violence victimization: A latent class analysis of female sex workers who use drugs in Kazakhstan.

INTRODUCTION: Punitive legal environments remain a challenge to HIV prevention efforts in Central Asia, and female sex workers who use drugs are vulnerable to police violence. Little is known about the heterogeneity of police violence against female sex workers who use drugs and factors associated with HIV risk in Central Asia, despite the growing HIV epidemic. METHODS: We recruited a community-based sample of 255 female sex workers who use drugs in Almaty, Kazakhstan between February 2015 and May 2017. We used latent class analysis to differentiate women into distinct classes of police viole

Perceived Social Support, Contact Violence Experience, and Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk among Gambian Female Sex Workers: A LASSO-Guided, Causal Inference, and Multilevel Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) face disproportionate risks of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS and various forms of violence. Although social support is generally considered protective against adverse health outcomes, its relationship with STI risk in high-risk population remains unclear. This study was conducted to determine and quantify key determinants of lifetime STI occurrence among FSWs in The Gambia, with a particular focus on violence experience and social support. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used, with secondary analysis of data from 429 FSWs

Findings from Encontros: a multilevel STI/HIV intervention to increase condom use, reduce STI, and change the social environment among sex workers in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV prevention programs, which do not modify social structural contexts that contribute to risk of STI/HIV may fail to bring about improvements in health, particularly among groups who experience discrimination and exclusion from public life. We conducted a multilevel intervention with sex workers, including improved clinical care and community-mobilizing strategies to modify social structural factors that shape sexual behavior, to improve condom use and reduce incident STI. METHODS: We followed 420 sex workers participating in the Encontros in

Top of the license practice or out of our scope? A qualitative analysis of social workers' role in cultivating prognostic awareness on hospital palliative care teams.

OBJECTIVE: Prognostic awareness, defined as patients’ understanding of their illness trajectory and likely prognosis, is an essential component of informed decision-making, values-based care planning, and high-quality palliative care. Although discussing prognosis is traditionally viewed as a physician-led task, palliative social workers (PSWs) are often involved in interventions that require prognostic understanding. Little is known, however, about the role social workers play in cultivating prognostic awareness, the professional boundaries surrounding prognostic discussions, and how PSWs’ en…

A comparison of self-perceived physical and psycho-social worker profiles of people with direct work injury, chronic low back pain, and cumulative trauma.

This study investigated the psycho-social factors among injured workers and the influence of their psycho-social profile on the readiness of return to work. Sixty-four subjects with injuries on the upper limbs or lower limbs, low back pain, or cumulative trauma disorder were recruited. The workers' profiles (self-perceived physical health, mental health, and work readiness) together with the impact and types of work injury on the workers' perceived wellness were measured. The regression model of work readiness was constructed to develop a theoretical background for predicting work readiness ba

Perceived Social and Emotional Support from Co-Workers and Supervisors and Occupational Stress in Emergency Physicians: A Pre-Pandemic National Cross-Sectional Study from Slovenia.

Background/Objectives: Emergency physicians report high levels of occupational stress, but its organisational determinants remain under-investigated, particularly in small national systems. This exploratory, pre-pandemic study examined occupational stress among emergency medicine specialists in Slovenia, hypothesising that lower perceived support from supervisors and from co-workers would be associated with greater stress. Methods: All 86 emergency medicine specialists registered in Slovenia were surveyed in March-April 2019, and 45 participated (52.3%). Stress and support were measured with t

Sexual orientation and social network size moderate associations between stigma and problematic alcohol use among male sex workers in the US Northeast: an observational study.

UNLABELLED: Background Stigma is associated with poor health among sexual minority individuals. However, no studies have examined the relationship between stigma and problematic drinking among male sex workers (MSWs). This study examined the relationship between sex work stigma and problematic alcohol use among MSWs. METHODS: Using baseline data from a cohort of 98 MSWs in the US Northeast enrolled between 2015 and 2016, we used logistic regression to examine associations between sex work stigma and hazardous drinking (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) score ≥8) and sex work w

Enduring mental health morbidity and social function impairment in world trade center rescue, recovery, and cleanup workers: the psychological dimension of an environmental health disaster.

BACKGROUND: The World Trade Center (WTC) attacks exposed thousands of workers to hazardous environmental conditions and psychological trauma. In 2002, to assess the health of these workers, Congress directed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to establish the WTC Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program. This program has established a large cohort of WTC rescue, recovery, and cleanup workers. We previously documented extensive pulmonary dysfunction in this cohort related to toxic environmental exposures. OBJECTIVES: Our objective in this study was to describe mental hea

Protocol for the DECIDE+ trial: a quasi-experimental hybrid effectiveness-implementation study of social support and CVD self-management through community health workers in Philadelphia.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the USA, with significant disparities affecting racial/ethnic minority populations particularly in Philadelphia. Although effective self-management can improve outcomes for those with CVD risk factors, social and economic barriers often impede implementation of recommended health behaviours in underserved communities. This study aims to (1) determine the effectiveness of the Decision-making Education for Choices in Diabetes Everyday (DECIDE)+ intervention in improving CVD self-management skills among Philadelphia residen

Co-Development of a Web Application (COVID-19 Social Site) for Long-Term Care Workers ("Something for Us"): User-Centered Design and Participatory Research Study.

BACKGROUND: Improving confidence in and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines and boosters among long-term care workers (LTCWs) is a crucial public health goal, given their role in the care of elderly people and people at risk. While difficult to reach with workplace communication interventions, most LTCWs regularly use social media and smartphones. Various social media interventions have improved attitudes and uptake for other vaccines and hold promise for the LTCW population. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop a curated social web application (interactive website) to increase COVID-19 vaccine confidence
