Utility of longitudinal and radial myocardial velocities assessed by color tissue Doppler imaging in dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by left ventricular (LV) dilatation and impaired myocardial systolic function. Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) has been developed to assess myocardial wall velocities and might therefore be expected to be a useful tool in the diagnosis of DCM. The aim of the study was to ascertain whether TDI variables differ between DCM dogs and normal control dogs. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-three client-owned dogs, 37 with DCM and 46 control dogs, were included in the study. A prospective observational study was conducted. RES

Right-to-left shunting following left atrial decompression in three dogs.

Three dogs with advanced myxomatous mitral valve disease underwent left atrial decompression (LAD) via transseptal puncture and balloon atrial septostomy as a palliative treatment for refractory left-sided congestive heart failure. Variable degrees of pulmonary hypertension were present at the time of LAD. Each dog initially exhibited predominantly left-to-right shunting across the iatrogenic atrial septal defect but subsequently developed clinically relevant right-to-left shunting in the postoperative period. Progressive hypoxaemia, haemodynamic instability and clinical deterioration occurred

Rapid arteriotomy or venotomy site closure using a pre-placed purse-string suture technique in dogs.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Ligation of a catheterized vessel after image-guided intervention is common in veterinary medicine, which may affect vascular supply or limit future access. This prospective case series investigated the utility of a preplaced purse-string suture technique for rapid closure of vascular catheterization sites in dogs. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Vascular cut down was performed, and a purse-string suture was preplaced around the intended puncture site using 6-0 monofilament, non-absorbable polypropylene suture in 45 vessels from 40 dogs undergoing femoral arterial (n

Left atrial mural infective endocarditis complicated by coronary embolism and left ventricular myocardial infarction in a cat.

A three-year-old female Devon Rex was referred for postpartum complications. On presentation, physical examination revealed depression, hypothermia, pale mucous membranes and a grade II/VI left apical systolic murmur. Laboratory tests showed severe non-regenerative anaemia, moderate leucocytosis and increased cardiac troponin I (4.16 ng/mL; upper hospital limit <0.2 ng/mL). Transthoracic echocardiography showed no remodelling or dysfunction of either cardiac chamber and no valvular abnormalities. However, a 6-mm echogenic structure with well-defined margins was identified in the left atrial (L

Evaluation of anti-desmoglein-2 antibodies and cardiac biomarkers in Boxer dogs with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether circulating anti-desmoglein-2 antibodies distinguish Boxer dogs with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy from screened controls and assess the diagnostic utility of anti-desmoglein-2, cardiac troponin I (cTnI), high-sensitivity cTnI (HS-cTnI), and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) relative to arrhythmia burden. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study included 52 Boxer dogs (28 arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy-affected and 24 screened controls). Di

Third-degree atrioventricular block from metastatic poorly differentiated sarcoma suggestive of osteosarcoma in a dog.

A nine-year-old, female spayed, mixed-breed dog was presented with a history of lethargy, anorexia, and bradycardia. Diagnostic evaluation revealed third-degree atrioventricular (AV) block secondary to an infiltrative mass in the septal AV junctional region, with additional masses and nodules in the right third rib, lungs, and kidneys. Necropsy confirmed multifocal neoplastic lesions within the pericardium, myocardium, septal AV junction, rib, kidneys, pancreas, and mesentery. Histopathological examination demonstrated a poorly differentiated sarcoma with an osteosarcoma prioritized.

Prevention of blood dilution during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery in a cat with ventricular septal defect.

A six-month-old, 3.3-kg, intact male American shorthair cat with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) underwent open-heart surgery using total cardiopulmonary bypass. Repair of the VSD was performed via a right fifth intercostal thoracotomy using a right atrial approach. To avoid excessive blood dilution, blood cardioplegia, retrograde autologous priming, conventional ultrafiltration, and modified ultrafiltration were used. After surgery, the shunted flow through the VSD resolved. The cat was alive without medical therapy or clinical signs one year after surgery. Information on open-heart surgery

Use of transesophageal echocardiography guidance for pulmonary artery banding in a cat with ventricular septal defect.

Pulmonary artery banding (PAB) is a long-term palliative treatment option for hemodynamically significant ventricular septal defects. The goal of PAB is to increase right ventricular afterload and consequently right ventricular systolic pressure, thereby reducing the interventricular pressure gradient and left-to-right systolic shunting flow. Historically, the guidelines for PAB have been formulated to reduce the pulmonary artery (PA) to approximately one-third of its original diameter. More recently, intra-operative monitoring techniques for assessing appropriate banding have been reported, s

Clinical significance of ventricular ectopy and development of dilated cardiomyopathy in Irish wolfhound dogs.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Cardiac disease is the second leading cause of death in Irish wolfhound (IW) populations (15.27%). Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a common hereditary disease in IWs. No correlation between ventricular premature complexes (VPCs) and DCM has been noted in IW populations. The authors hypothesized that VPCs on a baseline electrocardiogram (ECG) do not predict the development of DCM. ANIMALS, MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-four IWs of breeding age were prospectively recruited in the study. Irish wolfhounds underwent a cardiac examination, echocardiogram, laboratory testing,

Isorhythmic atrioventricular dissociation in an alert normothermic cat.

An 11-year-old male neutered Birman cat was referred for investigation of pyelonephritis. On physical examination, gallop sounds and bradycardia were noted. There was mild azotaemia and marked neutrophilia, attributed to the pyelonephritis. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a non-specific cardiomyopathy phenotype with biatrial enlargement. Electrocardiography showed wide QRS complexes, bradycardia and synchronous dissociation between atrial and ventricular activity. During the first examination, the synchronisation appeared mostly fixed, with consistent PR intervals; on subsequent evalua

Recurrent transient myocardial thickening and congestive heart failure in a cat.

A five-year-old female spayed domestic shorthair cat presented for acute onset respiratory distress. Thoracic radiographs and echocardiography revealed left-sided congestive heart failure and left ventricular thickening with left atrial dilation, respectively. The cat was treated with furosemide, clopidogrel, and ondansetron. Re-evaluation one year later revealed complete reverse remodeling with normalization of the left ventricle and left atrial size on echocardiography. Medical therapy was discontinued. Approximately two years after the initial presentation, the cat presented again for acute
