Background Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that mainly affects the upper and lower motor neurons. The authors report a successful Meckel's scan performed 26 hours after a labeled RBC study using a commercial in-vitro labeling kit, UltraTag (Mallinckrodt Medical, Inc., St. Louis, MO). No abnormal alteration of Tc-99m distribution was observed as would be seen if an in-vivo RBC labeling technique was used. This case demonstrates that it is feasible to perform an in-vitro labeled RBC study for acute gastrointestinal bleeding in pediatric patients and to follow-up with a Meckel's scan if it is necessary for diagnostic confirmation.

Rumen strains of the obligate anaerobe Bacteroides melaninogenicus normally require medium supplemented with both heme and vitamin K. Sodium succinate was found to be an additional growth factor in that this compound can replace the requirement for heme in the presence of vitamin K, allowing good growth of the organism, and succinate can also partially replace the requirement for vitamin K in the presence of heme. BACKGROUND: In murine models, controversial data have been reported on the effect of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) administration during resuscitation from trauma-and-hemorrhage. The H2S donor sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) is a recognized drug devoid of major side effects, and, hence, we determined its effects in our full scale ICU-model of resuscitated murine trauma-and-hemorrhage.
