Nematode infections: soil-transmitted helminths and trichinella.

Infection with soil-transmitted helminths occurs via ingestion of nematode eggs with contaminated food and water, via hands, or inhalation of dust, or by penetration of larvae through the skin. Trichinella infections are caused by the ingestion of larvae contained in undercooked meat. In highly endemic areas, preventive chemotherapy (ie, regular administration of anthelmintic drugs to at-risk populations) is the key strategy against soil-transmitted helminthiasis. Integrated control approaches, including improved hygiene, sanitation, and water, are required for lasting effects. Because of grow

[Microbial degradation of organophosphonates by soil bacteria].

Bacteria that can utilize glyphosate (GP) or methylphosphonic acid (MPA) as a sole phosphorus source have been isolated from soil samples polluted with organophosphonates (OP). No matter which of these compounds was predominant in the native habitat of the strains, all of them utilized methylphosphonate. Some of the strains isolated from GP-polluted soil could utilize both phosphorus sources. Strains growing on glyphosate only were not isolated. The isolates retained high destructive activity after long-term storage of cells in lyophilized state, freezing to -20 degrees C, and maintenance on v

Antibiotic Transport via Runoff and Soil Loss.

Research has verified the occurrence of veterinary antibiotics in manure, agricultural fields, and surface water bodies, yet little research has evaluated antibiotic runoff from agricultural fields. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential for agricultural runoff to contribute antibiotics to surface water bodies in a worst-case scenario. Our hypothesis was that there would be significant differences in antibiotic concentrations, partitioning of losses between runoff and sediment, and pseudo-partitioning coefficients (ratio of sediment concentration to runoff concentration) amo

Sorption of aged dicamba residues in soil.

The effect of aging (residence time in soil) on dicamba (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid) and a major metabolite, 3,6-dichlorosalicylic acid (3,6-DCSA) sorption was determined in an unamended and a carbon-amended sandy loam and in a silt loam soil. During the incubation, sequential solvent extraction with 0.01 M calcium chloride solution and aqueous acetonitrile + hydrochloric acid was used to determine the solution and sorbed concentrations of dicamba and 3,6-DSCA, and sorption coefficients were calculated. Dicamba was weakly sorbed to soil (Kd < 0.7). In contrast to some other classes of

Field evaluation of bone biochar for improving maize yield, soil health, and carbon efficiency in arid soils.

BACKGROUND: the study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of bone-derived biochar, produced from slaughterhouse waste, as a multifunctional soil amendment within a climate-smart and circular agriculture framework. The central research question explores whether biochar can enhance maize (Zea mays) productivity, improve soil health, and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in arid agroecosystems. A two-season field experiment was conducted on loamy sand soil under drip irrigation to assess the impact of biochar applied at 0, 5, 10, and 20 t ha-1. The responses measured included agronomic traits

Nutrient management in calcareous soils under semi-arid environments: effects on cotton productivity and soil health.

In calcareous and alkaline soils, the availability of essential nutrients is limited, leading to substantial reductions in both yield and fiber quality in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) production. This study investigated the effects of different combinations of sulfur (S), zinc sulfate (ZnSO₄), potassium sulfate (K₂SO₄), and urea on cotton yield and soil health in a two-year field experiment conducted under the conditions of the Şanlıurfa–Harran (Türkiye) Plain during the 2023–2024 growing seasons. Six different treatments were applied via soil and foliar application methods, and yield parame

Initial and residual benefits of soil amendments in reducing phosphorus release from soils with simulated snowmelt flooding.

In the Canadian prairies, spring snowmelt occurs rapidly and causes flooding in low-lying areas, inducing anaerobic soil conditions and exacerbating phosphorus (P) release to meltwater. Soil amendments can mitigate P loss from flooded soils soon after amendment application; however, their residual benefits are less understood. We examined the initial and residual benefits of alum (Al2(SO4)3·18H2O), gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), and Epsom salt (MgSO4·7H2O) in a simulated snowmelt flooding experiment. Intact soil columns were taken from amended and unamended field plots in the same year and 1 year after

Degradation dynamics of saflufenacil and tiafenacil in agricultural soils and their impacts on soil microbial networks and carbon-nitrogen cycling.

Herbicides are vital for sustaining global crop production; however, the limited understanding of their residual effects on soil microbial interactions and ecosystem processes leads to an underestimation of their long-term ecological risks to agricultural soil health. This study investigated the degradation dynamics of two novel PPO-inhibiting herbicides, saflufenacil and tiafenacil, and their impacts on microbial networks and carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling across five contrasting agricultural soils. Both herbicides dissipated rapidly, with half-lives ranging from 0.8 to 4.1 days, and deg

Temperature and soil pollution affect dissolved and colloidal antimony release from flooded shooting range soils.

Antimony (Sb) mobility in soils, whether dissolved or colloidal, is an emerging concern, yet its geochemical behavior, particularly under future climatic conditions, remains poorly understood. In a 28-day microcosm experiment, we investigated Sb release from two shooting range soils under flooded conditions at 20°C and 25°C. Sequential extractions and pore water analyses were conducted to assess Sb release at different temperatures. Sb size distribution was examined across pore water filtrates and characterized using asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AF4). The soils had different level

Soil fertility impact on recruitment and diversity of the soil microbiome in sub-humid tropical pastures in Northeastern Brazil.

Soil fertility is key point to pastures systems and drives the microbial communities and their functionality. Therefore, an understanding of the interaction between soil fertility and microbial communities can increase our ability to manage pasturelands and maintain their soil functioning and productivity. This study probed the influence of soil fertility on microbial communities in tropical pastures in Brazil. Soil samples, gathered from the top 20 cm of twelve distinct areas with diverse fertility levels, were analyzed via 16S rRNA sequencing. The soils were subsequently classified into two

Siderophore-producing bacteria from Spitsbergen soils-novel agents assisted in bioremediation of the metal-polluted soils.

Siderophores are molecules that exhibit a high specificity for iron (Fe), and their synthesis is induced by a deficiency of bioavailable Fe. Complexes of Fe-siderophore are formed extracellularly and diffuse through porins across membranes into bacterial cells. Siderophores can bind heavy metals facilitating their influx into cells via the same mechanism. The aim of the studies was to determine the ability of siderophore-producing bacteria isolated from soils in the north-west part of Wedel Jarlsberg Land (Spitsbergen) to chelate non-Fe metals (Al, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Mn, Sn, and Zn). Specially mo

The effect of short-term plants cultivation on soil organic/inorganic carbon storage in newly formed soils.

Studying total soil carbon (STC), which encompasses organic (SOC) and inorganic carbon (SIC), as well as investigating the influence of soil carbon on other soil properties, is crucial for effective global soil carbon management. This knowledge is invaluable for evaluating carbon sequestration, although its scope is currently limited. Boosting soil carbon sequestration, particularly in arid regions, has direct and indirect implications for achieving over four Sustainable Development Goals: mitigating hunger, extreme poverty, enhancing environmental preservation, and addressing global climate c

Foam flushing with soil vapor extraction for enhanced treatment of diesel contaminated soils in a one-dimensional column.

A limitation of soil vapor extraction (SVE) remediation for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in the unsaturated zone is the inability to remove the less volatile petroleum mixture compounds in diesel fuel. SVE combined with foam flushing may have the potential to enhance dissolution or mobilization of soil sorbed diesel and allow mobilized diesel to move to the SVE extraction well. A nonionic surfactant polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monooleate (TW80) was selected for generating foam, and a procedure to incorporate the oxidant sodium persulfate (SPS) in generating TW80/SPS foam to deliver ch

Extension of an extraction method for the determination of 305 organic compounds in clay-loam soil to soils of different characteristics.

Soil is one of the environmental compartments most affected by pollution. From this medium, the organic compounds can be emitted to the groundwater, the atmosphere, or the biota. Thus, having adequate methods of analysis of organic pollutants in this matrix is essential. However, the soil is a very complex matrix whose organic and inorganic components can determine the degree to which they are retained. Therefore, the methods must account for the various soil characteristics. In this study, the performance of an extraction method that had been already validated in clay loam soils for more than

The influences of soil sulfate content on the transformations of nitrate and sulfate during the reductive soil disinfestation (RSD) process.

The transformations and products of sulfate (SO42-) and nitrate (NO3-), especially the influences of SO42- content on the transformations during RSD process, are unclear. In this study, a series of soil SO42- contents (from 333 to 3000 mg S kg-1) were prepared before RSD treatment. The results indicated that nearly all the cumulative NO3- (>98.6%) was removed and not affected by the soil SO42- content. The 15N recovery results showed that 0.57-1.24% and 2.94-4.59% of NO3- translated into ammonium (NH4+) and organic N, respectively, and high SO42- contents stimulated the processes of NO3- dissi

The role of biochar, natural iron oxides, and nanomaterials as soil amendments for immobilizing metals in shooting range soil.

High concentration of toxic metals in military shooting range soils poses a significant environmental concern due to the potential release of metals, such as Pb, Cu, and Sb, and hence requires remediation. The current study examined the effectiveness of buffalo weed (Ambrosia trifida L.) biomass and its derived biochars at pyrolytic temperatures of 300 and 700 °C, natural iron oxides (NRE), gibbsite, and silver nanoparticles on metal immobilization together with soil quality after 1-year soil incubation. Effect of N and P addition on soil organic C potential mineralization in forest soils in South China.

Atmospheric nitrogen deposition is at a high level in some forests of South China. The effects of addition of exogenous N and P on soil organic carbon mineralization were studied to address: (1) if the atmospheric N deposition promotes soil C storage through decreasing mineralization; (2) if the soil available P is a limitation to organic carbon mineralization. Soils (0-10 cm) was sampled from monsoon evergreen broad-leaved forest (MEBF), coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest (CBMF), and Pinus massoniana forest (PMF) in Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve (located in Guangdong Province, China).
