Trends in greenhouse gas emissions from China's municipal solid waste sector at urban and county levels: key drivers and mitigation strategies.

Significant changes have occurred in China's municipal solid waste (MSW) management methods over the last two decades, yet comprehensive assessments of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission patterns and their driving factors remain limited. In this study, GHG emissions from the urban and county-level MSW disposal sector in China during 2006-2023 were quantified using the IPCC methodology, and the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) was applied to identify key drivers. Urban and county-level emissions followed different temporal trajectories, with the transition in county-level MSW management occurri…

Multivariate statistical assessment of critical and trace elements in fly ash from a municipal solid waste incineration plant in southern Poland.

Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) is an environmentally significant residue and a potential secondary source of critical elements, but its heterogeneity and below-detection values complicate geochemical and resource assessment. This study characterized 24 trace, critical, and rare earth element variables in 30 weekly fly ash samples from an MSWI plant in southern Poland. Left-censored observations were treated using Tobit regression before hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA), enrichment factor (EF) calculation, and partial least squares (P…

Regulation of suspended solid properties for enhanced struvite-based nutrient recovery from food waste digestate: crystallization pathway control and nucleation mechanism.

Struvite crystallization represents a promising strategy for nutrient recovery from food waste digestate (FWD), yet the influence of suspended solids (SS), which are abundant in real digestate matrices, on crystallization performance remains insufficiently understood. This study elucidates how SS properties regulate struvite formation by integrating fractional centrifugation, in-situ crystallization monitoring, and multi-scale characterization. Size-fractionated SS exhibited divergent mechanistic roles. Large SS particles (Dv (50) = 48.8 μm) acted primarily as impurity carriers, concentrating

Valorisation of chestnut burr (Castanea sativa) waste by a novel sustainable matrix solid-phase dispersion: Polyphenol profiling and bioactive activities assessment.

Chestnut burrs (Castanea sativa) are abundant agri-food residues with potential as a source of fibre and polyphenols. This work proposes a matrix solid-phase dispersion-ultrasound-assisted extraction (MSPD-UAE) method for the recovery of phenolic compounds from chestnut burr residues. A multi-level factorial design was applied for process optimisation. Chemical characterization by cLC-DAD-ESI-MS revealed ellagic acid (200 ± 20 μg·g-1) and catechin (195 ± 8 μg·g-1) as the major phenolic compounds. Mineral analysis showed high concentrations of calcium and phosphorus, whereas low levels of Cu, F

Slow pyrolysis of Terminalia catappa L. municipal solid waste and the use of the aqueous fraction produced for bovine mastitis control.

The Terminalia catappa L. tree is an ornamental and shade tree producter of a large amount of biological waste sent to landfills. Therefore, this plant constitutes so-called municipal solid wood waste (MSWW), which causes undesirable impacts on the environment, such as the generation of methane through the action of microorganisms. Sustainable solutions for the proper use and disposal of MSWW are a topic that has assumed great relevance at present due to the high quantities of MSWW generated worldwide. Pyrolysis constitutes an attractive alternative for the sustainable use of MSWW to produce h

Prevalence of occupational injuries and associated factors among solid waste collectors in Jigjiga city, eastern Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study design.

BACKGROUND: Solid waste collectors play an important role in maintaining health and hygiene in cities globally. The risk levels are very high in low-income countries since solid waste collectors have low socio-economic status and are exposed directly, unknowingly, and without adequate personal protection to municipal solid waste that contains hazardous materials. Solid waste collectors in Ethiopia are at high risk of occupational injuries due to the manual collection of hazardous solid waste by hand. In Jigjiga city, so far, there has been no study or published research showing the prevalence …

Simultaneous realization of heavy metal Cd solidification and chloride separation in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash: Mechanism and DFT analysis.

The solidification of heavy metals and the separation-recycling of chloride salts are effective approaches for the safe disposal of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash. This study achieved the solidification of the excessive heavy metal Cd by transforming MSWI fly ash into a solidified body mainly composed of ettringite, while also purifying the calcium and sulfate ions in the chloride solution. The research results demonstrate that the introduction of aluminum ions rapidly decreases the pH value of the MSWI fly ash reaction system. By adjusting the reaction system to a pH value …

Emission of volatile organic compounds from a small-scale municipal solid waste transfer station: Ozone-formation potential and health risk assessment.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the main precursors of tropospheric ozone and secondary aerosol generation, posing a threat to human health and affecting the environmental climate. A large quantity of VOCs can be produced in the initial decomposition stage of municipal solid waste (MSW). In this study, the atmosphere in an MSW transfer station was monitored for one year. The emission characteristics of VOCs in different seasons and working hours were analyzed, and the ozone-formation potential of VOCs was calculated through the maximum incremental reaction method, and health risks posed …

Phosphorus speciation and transformation during anaerobic digestion of organic solid wastes: From molecular characterization to process-controlled valorization.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential but finite resource, and global sustainability is challenged by the depletion of phosphate rock reserves and P-driven water eutrophication. Organic solid wastes (OSWs) represent potential urban P mines. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a central platform for OSW stabilization and energy recovery, and the accompanying shifts in P speciation largely determine downstream P recovery potential. However, the complex biochemical transformation mechanisms governing P redistribution during AD remain insufficiently resolved, limiting efficient P recovery. This review systematic…

Optimized Production of Medically Significant Enzyme L-Asparaginase Under Submerged and Solid-State Fermentation From Agricultural Wastes.

L-asparaginase has prime medical significance due to its chemotherapeutic applications and action against a wide range of diseases. L-asparaginase obtained from commercial producer bacterial strains causes anaphylaxis, some sensitive reactions, and other side effects. To overcome these issues, eukaryotes like fungi can be used to produce L-asparaginase. Penicillium lilacinum was explored for its enhanced production through a statistically optimized fermentation approach. Firstly, the significant fermentation parameters (influencing the production) were screened through the Plackett-Burman appr

Evaluation of the effectiveness and mechanisms of acetaminophen and methylene blue dye adsorption on activated biochar derived from municipal solid wastes.

The adsorption potential and governing mechanisms of emerging contaminants, i.e. acetaminophen or acetyl-para-aminophenol (APAP) and methylene blue (MB) dye, on activated carbon derived from municipal solid waste were investigated in this work. Results showed that MB adsorption was significantly more effective, with a maximum removal of 99.9%, than APAP adsorption (%Rmax = 63.7%). MB adsorption was found to be unaffected by pH change, while the adsorption capacity of APAP drastically dropped by about 89% when the pH was adjusted from pH 2 to 12. Surface reactions during APAP adsorption was dom…
