The first case of haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS) caused by Vero toxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) which belonged to a novel serotype, Rough: K-: H49, is reported. The ensuing osmotic change, caused by sorbitol accumulation, adversely affects the lens permeability barrier so that the distribution within the lens of electrolytes, amino acids, and myo-inositol becomes grossly altered. Five polyols, arabinitol, anhydroglucitol, mannitol, sorbitol and myoinositol, normally present in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), were studied. Quantitative gas-liquid chromatographic analysis of 211 CSF and 112 plasma samples indicated significantly altered concentrations in several clinical conditions. A study of hemolytic streptococci from clinical infections in dogs revealed the presence of four serogroups, with one to four biotypes in each, based on carbohydrate fermentation patterns. Glucose (10-50 mM) added to samples of citrated whole blood increased the spontaneous platelet aggregation (SPA) that was observed upon stirring the samples, in a dose-dependent but time-independent manner. The metabolism of carbohydrates, organic acids, amino acids and phenolics was compared between the sun-exposed peel and the shaded peel of apple fruit.
