Identification of physiological clusters in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure patients undergoing non-invasive respiratory support using EIT-based t-SNE and spectral clustering.

PURPOSE: Identifying physiological clusters in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF) may help to personalize non-invasive respiratory support (NIRS). Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) provides real-time, regional information on tidal ventilation, but its value for clustering AHRF patients undergoing NIRS has not been established. METHODS: We conducted a single-center observational study including adults with AHRF monitored with EIT during NIRS. Tidal ventilation images were pre-processed, normalized, and embedded into a 2-dimensional space using t-SNE. Spectral clustering was applied

Mechanism-based clustering reveals distinct controls on phytoplankton community composition across Korean marginal seas from integrated in situ and satellite observations (KORUS-OC 2016).

Phytoplankton regulate the marine food web, biogeochemical processes, and climate-relevant carbon export to depth in the oceans, but the mechanisms controlling their distributions vary across space and time, limiting inference from pooled analyses. We developed a mechanism-based clustering framework that groups stations by covariate-community response fingerprints inferred from a multivariate generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). Station-specific random effects across major taxa were treated as fingerprints and clustered to define mechanism-consistent groups; Geostationary Ocean Color Imager

Spatial analysis of an anthrax outbreak in Saskatchewan, 2006.

An outbreak of anthrax in Saskatchewan in 2006 affected more than 800 animals at 150 locations. The purpose of this study was to assess the spatial and temporal patterns among the cases to determine if there were any significant trends associated with this outbreak. Case and population data were first analyzed for each individual farm location and then again as aggregate data per rural municipality using spatial and spatiotemporal statistical methods such as Oden's Ipop, Cuzick-Edwards' test, spatial scan test, and other mapping techniques. East central Saskatchewan was identified as a primary

Simulation modelling as a tool for evaluating surveillance programmes for detection of the Asian honeybee mite ( Varroa destructor ) in the South Island of New Zealand.

AIM: To use a simulation model of the spread of the Asian honeybee mite (Varroa destructor) amongst apiaries, to evaluate a series of detection surveillance programmes for the South Island of New Zealand. METHODS: Five potential incursion sites into the South Island were selected. A stochastic spatial simulation model, Varroa_ sim, was adapted to simulate spread of the mite from these sites as a series of silent-phase propagating epidemics. The study population comprised all apiaries in the South Island registered in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's (MAF's) apiary database in 2003.

Identifying West Nile virus risk areas: the Dynamic Continuous-Area Space-Time system.

The Dynamic Continuous-Area Space-Time (DYCAST) system was developed to identify and prospectively monitor high-risk areas for West Nile virus in New York, New York (New York City). The system is based on a geographic model that uses a localized Knox test to capture the nonrandom space-time interaction of dead birds, as an indicator of an intense West Nile virus amplification cycle, within a 1.5-mile (2.41-km) buffer area and 21-day moving window. The Knox analysis is implemented as an interpolation function to create a surface of probabilities over a grid of 1,400 cells overlaying New York Ci

Gastrointestinal bleeding with influenza virus.

Seven children who presented during the influenza A(H1N1) epidemic of 1988 are described. After a typical influenzal illness, they developed haematemesis of varying severity. Endoscopy revealed haemorrhagic gastritis. Laboratory evidence of influenza A(H1N1) virus infection was present. Two children died as a result of their illness. The association of virus and gastrointestinal haemorrhage is explored.

The epidemiology of trachoma in central Tanzania.

Trachoma is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide and data are needed on the epidemiological characteristics of active and residual disease in hyperendemic areas. This study describes the epidemiological characteristics of trachoma in Central Tanzania. Active, inflammatory disease peaks in pre-school children, with 60% showing signs of trachoma. Evidence of past infection, scarring, trichiasis, and corneal opacity, rose with age. In this population, 8% of those over age 55 had trichiasis/entropion. Females of all ages had more trachoma than males, with a fourfold increased risk o

[Foci of outbreaks of food poisoning and intestinal infections in Poland 1945-1989].

This paper is a comparative study on epidemiological data compiled from papers of intestinal infections and intoxications in Poland during the years 45-89. The following criteria were applied: kind of food as vehicle of infection/intoxication in outbreaks; place of appearance of outbreaks; bacterial aetiological agents of cases and serotypes of Salmonella as causative agent in outbreaks. The number and percentage of outbreaks and cases in outbreaks were analyzed. Most cases and outbreaks were connected with dishes from meat in 1945-1979 and with dishes from uncooked eggs in 1985-1989. Most out

Epidemiologic designs for the study of acquired immunodeficiency disease: options and obstacles.

Epidemiologic methods are designed to identify risk factors involved in production of a particular disease, even when the specific etiologic agent is unknown. However, a major problem currently presenting obstacles to research on the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) relates to classification; approaches are described that will permit reclassification when better laboratory techniques are developed or when more information is available from studies on natural history. Further descriptive studies will be valuable in the determination of whether extension of disease has occurred to new p

Empirical descriptions of mental patient syndromes and types.

Used a cluster analytic procedure to describe mental illness. Data for 2,600 mental patients from a research record system were clustered into six symptom and four antecedent dimensions. The patients were typed into seven antecedent and seven symptom types according to their patterns of scores over these dimensions. The types were related to diagnostic data, the antecedent and symptom dimensions, impairment ratings, outcomes and biodata. Significant relationships of the types with all the classes of data are reported. The relationships of the types with four diagnostic classes and the merits o

Spatial and genetic clustering of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax infections in a low-transmission area of Ethiopia.

The distribution of malaria infections is heterogeneous in space and time, especially in low transmission settings. Understanding this clustering may allow identification and targeting of pockets of transmission. In Adama district, Ethiopia, Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax malaria patients and controls were examined, together with household members and immediate neighbors. Rapid diagnostic test and quantitative PCR (qPCR) were used for the detection of infections that were genetically characterized by a panel of microsatellite loci for P. falciparum (26) and P. vivax (11), respectively. Two-step spatiotemporal anomaly detection corrected for lag reporting time with application to real-time dengue surveillance in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Dengue infection ranges from asymptomatic to severe and life-threatening, with no specific treatment available. Vector control is crucial for interrupting its transmission cycle. Accurate estimation of outbreak timing and location is essential for efficient resource allocation. Timely and reliable notification systems are necessary to monitor dengue incidence, including spatial and temporal distributions, to detect outbreaks promptly and implement effective control measures. METHODS: We proposed an integrated two-step methodology for real-time spatiotemporal cluster detection, acc

Hierarchical Bayesian Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Climatic and Socio-Economic Determinants of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

This study aims to examine the spatio-temporal dynamics of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) prevalence in four contiguous states of Midwestern United States, and to determine the impact of environmental and socio-economic factors associated with this disease. Bayesian hierarchical models were used to quantify space and time only trends and spatio-temporal interaction effect in the case reports submitted to the state health departments in the region. Various socio-economic, environmental and climatic covariates screened a priori in a bivariate procedure were added to a main-effects Bayesian

A spatial analysis of co-circulating dengue and chikungunya virus infections during an epidemic in a region of Northeastern Brazil.

The aim of this study was to describe, through spatial analysis, the cases of arboviruses (dengue and chikungunya), including deaths, during the first epidemic after the circulation of the chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in the state of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil. This was an ecological study in both Pernambuco and the state capital, Recife, from 2015 to 2018. The odds ratios (OR) were estimated, and the statistical significance was considered p≤0.05. For the spatial analysis, Kulldorff's space-time scan statistics method was adopted to identify spatial clusters and to provide the relative risk

Molecular and spatial epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis in children in a semiurban community in South India.

Cryptosporidium spp. are a leading cause of diarrhea in Indian children, but there are no data for prevalent species or subgenotypes. Geneti … nfection due to C. hominis Ia, with a peak in February 2005. This is the first study to demonstrate space-time clustering of a single subgenotype of C. hominis in a setting where cryptosporidiosis is endemic. Molecular characterization and spatial analysis have the potential to further the understanding of disease and transmission in the community.

Coupling Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations and Statistical Moments for Designing Healthy Indoor Spaces.

Cross-contamination between occupants in an indoor space may occur due to transfer of infectious aerosols. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) provides detailed insight into particle transport in indoor spaces. However, such simulations are site-specific. This study couples CFD with statistical moments and establishes a framework that transitions site-specific results to generating guidelines for designing "Работает" indoor spaces. Eighteen cases were simulated, and three parameters were assessed: inlet/outlet location, air changes per hour, and the presence/absence of desks. Aerosol release due

Structured self-assembly of like-charged bridging nanoparticles driven by varying separation between two interfaces.

HYPOTHESIS: In this work, we observed the formation of rings and star-shape clusters formed from like-charged silica nanoparticles bridging a planar aqueous liquid-organic liquid interface and water-in-oil emulsion droplet. It is hypothesized that the confined space between the two liquid-liquid interfaces provides a template for the structured self-assembly of nanoparticles. METHODS: The real-time formation of tightly packed rings and star-shape clusters of bridging nanoparticles between two interfaces is observed using wide-field fluorescence microscopy without requiring additives or extern
