OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our pilot study was to assess the reliability and diagnostic validity of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). The usefulness of the schedule in the differentiation between children with autism and children with a severe specific receptive language disorder is examined.
METHOD: Eight boys with early infantile autism and eight age- and IQ-matched boys with a specific receptive language disorder were examined with the ADOS. The reliability of the instrument was assessed using the ratings of eight pairs of raters. The agreement between diagnostic classifica

Psychomotor dysfunction, which can manifest as slowing (psychomotor retardation; PmR) and jerkiness or restlessness (psychomotor agitation; PmA) often occurs in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD). As psychomotor dysfunction predicts a worse treatment response, accurately measuring and tracking PmR and PmA may improve outcomes. Traditionally, psychomotor dysfunction has been assessed using self-report or observer-based methods, which are often insensitive to subtle but potentially relevant movement abnormalities. Instrumental probes often require specialized equipment. Speech pres

PURPOSE: This article reviews findings from the Cleveland Family Speech and Reading Study, a 25-year longitudinal study of speech sound disorders (SSDs) of unknown etiology. The study sought to describe the long-term outcomes for individuals with early SSD, including those diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), and to identify genetic findings for endophenotypes and phenotypes associated with SSD.
METHOD: The data included in this article were collected from families (N = 296) with a child diagnosed with SSD. Probands and available siblings were assessed on a battery of speech, lan

The purpose of this study was to evaluate speech intelligibility after a dehiscence operation using artificial grafts for patients with speech disorders after partial glossectomy that were caused by scars resulting from the primary operation. The subjects were six men and three women, who had had a partial glossectomy for tongue cancer followed by direct closure without reconstruction. They were operated on a second time operation to mobilise the residual tongue by dividing the cicatrix. An artificial graft was applied to the wound to maintain the dehiscence. Speech intelligibility was evaluat

A 38-year-old male patient with a deep central parietal lesion in the left hemisphere reveals a motor speech disorder but no aphasia as evidenced by linguistic testing with the Aachener Aphasietest. Nuclear magnetic resonance tomography of the brain shows no lesion of the brainstem. Whether the speech disorder can be termed cortical dysarthria or apraxia of speech is left open to discussion.

OBJECTIVE: Speech sound disorder (SSD) describes a 'persistent difficulty with speech sound production that interferes with speech intelligibility or prevents verbal communication'. There is a need to establish which care pathways are most effective and efficient for children with SSD. Comparison of care pathways requires clearly defined, evidence-based, interventions and agreement on how to measure the outcomes. At present, no definitive list of assessments, interventions or outcomes exists. The objective of this umbrella review paper is to provide a rigorous and detailed list of assessments,

Pathogenic variants in BRPF1 cause intellectual disability, ptosis and facial dysmorphism. Speech and language deficits have been identified as a manifestation of BRPF1-related disorder but have not been systematically characterized. We provide a comprehensive delineation of speech and language abilities in BRPF1-related disorder and expand the phenotype. Speech and language, and health and medical history were assessed in 15 participants (male = 10, median age = 7 years 4 months) with 14 BRPF1 variants. Language disorders were common (11/12), and most had mild to moderate deficits across rece

BACKGROUND: MED13L-related disorder is associated with intellectual disability, motor delay, and speech deficits. Previous studies have focused on broad clinical descriptions of individuals, but limited information regarding specific speech diagnoses and results of direct testing has been published to date. We conducted deep phenotyping to characterize the speech, language, motor, cognitive, and adaptive phenotypes of individuals with MED13L-related disorder.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we administered standardized articulation, language, motor, and cognitive testing to 17 childre

The purpose of the study was to prove the effectiveness of the proposed method of treatment children with sagittal dental anomalies and speech disorders in the mixed dentition. Over the course of 2 years, we treated 59 children from 6 to 8 years of age with sagittal dental anomalies combined with organic dyslalia. Children who were treated according to the proposed procedure were included in 1 subgroup, and up to 2 subgroups included patients who were treated according to the conventional procedure. The control group included 12 children with physiological bites of the same age without speach

Corpora of speech of individuals with communication disorders (CSD) are invaluable resources for education and research, but they are costly and hard to build and difficult to share for various reasons. DELAD, which means 'shared' in Swedish, is a project initiated by Professors Nicole Müller and Martin Ball in 2015 that aims to address this issue by establishing a platform for researchers to share datasets of speech disorders with interested audiences. To date four workshops have been held, where selected participants, covering various expertise including researchers in clinical phonetics and

The concept of speech naturalness is used widely in clinic and research applications. Unfortunately, the lack of consistency in research methods means that comparing findings between studies is difficult at best. In order to better understand the state of research on speech naturalness in communication disorders and quantify these impressions, this study looks at publications from the last 18 years in a systematic manner. A literature search for the exact phrase "speech naturalness" of the PubMed/MEDLINE, EBSCO, and ASHAWire databases was conducted. Articles included in the review were studies

Broca coined the neologism "aphemia" to describe a syndrome consisting of a loss of the ability to speak without impairment of language and paralysis of the faciolingual territories in actions unrelated to speech, such as protruding the tongue or pursing the lips. Upon examining the brains of patients with aphemia, Broca concluded that the minimum possible lesion responsible for aphemia localized to the posterior left inferior frontal gyrus and lower portion of the middle frontal gyrus. A review of Broca's writings led us to conclude that (a) Broca localized speech, not language, to the left h

BACKGROUND: Psychosis has various causes, including mania and schizophrenia. Since the differential diagnosis of psychosis is exclusively based on subjective assessments of oral interviews with patients, an objective quantification of the speech disturbances that characterize mania and schizophrenia is in order. In principle, such quantification could be achieved by the analysis of speech graphs. A graph represents a network with nodes connected by edges; in speech graphs, nodes correspond to words and edges correspond to semantic and grammatical relationships.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:

PURPOSE: In this study, the authors evaluated literacy outcome in children with histories of speech sound disorder (SSD) who were characterized along 2 dimensions: broader language function and persistence of SSD. In previous studies, authors have demonstrated that each dimension relates to literacy but have not disentangled their effects. Methods Two groups of children (86 SSD and 37 controls) were recruited at ages 5-6 and were followed longitudinally. The authors report the literacy of children with SSD at ages 7-9, compared with controls and national norms, and relative to language skill a

Although a mutation (R553H) in the forkhead box (FOX)P2 gene is associated with speech/language disorder, little is known about the function of FOXP2 or its relevance to this disorder. In the present study, we identify the forkhead nuclear localization domains that contribute to the cellular distribution of FOXP2. Nuclear localization of FOXP2 depended on two distally separated nuclear localization signals in the forkhead domain. A truncated version of FOXP2 lacking the leu-zip, Zn2+ finger, and forkhead domains that was observed in another patient with speech abnormalities demonstrated an agg
