The agreement of phonetic transcriptions between paediatric speech and language therapists transcribing a disordered speech sample.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language therapists (SLTs) regularly use phonetic transcription to record and analyse typical and disordered speech. Phonetic transcription is highly demanding of auditory perceptual skills so researchers are sceptical about its accuracy and reliability. The literature describes how phonetic transcription is prone to auditory illusions and biases, such as a preference to transcribe speech sounds from the transcriber's own language. Few empirical research studies have calculated agreement amongst transcribers where a range of agreement scores have been reported (51%-97%).

Facilitating Parental Involvement in Speech Therapy for Children With Speech Sound Disorders: A Survey of Speech-Language Pathologists' Practices, Perspectives, and Strategies.

Purpose This study investigated the extent to which speech-language pathologists (SLPs) facilitate parents' completion of homework activities for children with speech sound disorder (SSD). In addition, this study explored factors related to more consistent communication about homework completion and strategies considered particularly effective for supporting this element of parental involvement. Method Licensed SLPs serving at least one child with SSD were invited to participate in an online survey. Questions relevant to this study gathered information regarding (a) frequency of communication

Differential diagnosis of children with suspected childhood apraxia of speech.

PURPOSE: The gold standard for diagnosing childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is expert judgment of perceptual features. The aim of this study was to identify a set of objective measures that differentiate CAS from other speech disorders. METHOD: Seventy-two children (4-12 years of age) diagnosed with suspected CAS by community speech-language pathologists were screened. Forty-seven participants underwent diagnostic assessment including presence or absence of perceptual CAS features. Twenty-eight children met two sets of diagnostic criteria for CAS (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,

Speech Sounds Production, Narrative Skills, and Verbal Memory of Children with 22q11.2 Microdeletion.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS), the most frequent microdeletion syndrome in humans, is related to a high risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders. About 95% of patients with 22q11.2DS have speech and language impairments. Global articulation, story generation, and verbal memory tests were applied to compare articulatory characteristics of speech sounds, spontaneous language abilities, and immediate verbal memory between four groups of Serbian-speaking children: patients with 22q11.2DS, children with clinical presentation of 22q11.2DS that do not have the microdeletion, children w

Diagnostic criteria of developmental apraxia of speech used by clinical speech-language pathologists.

The diagnostic criteria used to identify developmental apraxia of speech (DAS) have been at the center of controversy for decades. Despite the difficulty in determining the characteristics that differentiate DAS from other speech acquisition disorders, many children are identified with this disorder. The current report presents the criteria used by 75 speech-language pathologists to establish a diagnosis of DAS. Although 50 different characteristics were identified, 6 of these characteristics accounted for 51.5% of the responses. These characteristics included inconsistent productions, general

Voice therapy practices and techniques: a survey of voice clinicians.

Members of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Special Interest Division on Voice were asked to rate statements which emanated from a previously conducted national survey regarding the practice of voice therapy (Larson and Mueller, 1991). Respondents rated eight data-based statements on a five-point scale as to agreement/disagreement. Results indicated strong agreement with previous findings with the exception of the item addressing treatment time. Implications of these results are discussed.

Clinical practice of childhood apraxia of speech in Hong Kong: A web-based survey study.

BACKGROUND: A survey study on clinical practice not only provides insight into the implementation of knowledge, but also informs future investigations. There is a limited understanding of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) in Cantonese speakers. This study examined the clinical practice of CAS in Hong Kong and discussed future directions of research for better evidence-based practice. METHODS: Qualified Hong Kong pediatric speech-language pathologists (SLPs) completed the online questionnaire, which had a total of 48 questions regarding their knowledge of and experience with CAS in Cantonese s

Crowdsourcing to Assess Speech Quality Associated With Velopharyngeal Dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: To assess crowdsourced responses in the evaluation of speech outcomes in children with velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD). DESIGN: Fifty deidentified speech samples were compiled. Multiple pairwise comparisons obtained by crowdsourcing were used to produce a rank order of speech quality. Ratings of overall and specific speech characteristics were also collected. Twelve speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who specialize in VPD were asked to complete the same tasks. Crowds and experts completed each task on 2 separate occasions at least 1 week apart. SETTING: On-line crowdsourcing pla

Safe Medication Administration in Patients with Communication Disorders: A Simulation-Enhanced Interprofessional Education Approach.

Medications and their associated side effects impact systems treated by speech-language pathologists and audiologists, such as speech, language, voice, swallowing, hearing, tinnitus, and balance. However, students in these disciplines receive limited training in pharmacology, while nursing students receive training in pharmacology but limited training in communication disorders. In this interprofessional simulation experience to increase understanding of the impact of medications on communication, swallowing, and balance, audiology, nursing, and speech-language pathology students worked togeth…

A survey of the clinical management of childhood apraxia of speech in the United States and Canada.

PURPOSE: Limited information is available about the current practices of generalist speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in relation to their management of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). This study was designed to investigate four primary questions separately for the US and Canada; 1. What treatment approaches are used by SLP clinicians to treat CAS? 2. What treatment format and intensity are used to deliver CAS treatment? 3. What are the attitudes and perspectives of SLPs to evidence-based practice (EBP) as it pertains to CAS treatment? and 4. What are the perceived barriers to the impleme

Assessment and treatment of gesture in neurogenic communication disorders: An international survey of practice.

BACKGROUND: Gesture and speech collaborate in conveying meaning, and gesture is often leveraged by people with neurogenic communication disorders, such as aphasia, cognitive-communicative impairments and primary progressive aphasia, when words fail them. Because gesture is imagistic, transitory and holistic, there are inherent challenges when assessing and treating it. AIMS: The survey had three primary research questions: (1) what gesture assessment practices, and (2) what gesture treatment practices, are employed by speech and language therapists (SLTs) internationally; and (3) what are the
