[Presence of epithelial cells in the medullary canal after spinal anesthesia].

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Several authors have focused on a causal link between the onset of neurological complications after lumbar injections an … ibility that, after subarachnoid anesthesia using 22G Quincke needles, skin fragments may enter the spinal canal. The permanence or otherwise of the epithelial fragments on the third day depends on the size of the fragment drawn down and the efficacy of the drainage system which removes isolated epithelial cells. This phenomenon may justify the self-limiting c …

Quantitative measurements of the spinal cord and canal by MR imaging and myelography.

There is a large individual variation in human spinal cord and canal size, even in patients of different series studied by the same modality, and no authorized standard method has been established. A comparative study of sagittal diameters of the cervical spinal cord and canal using myelography and MRI is presented. The purposes of this paper are (a) to establish the correction factor (CF) needed for quantitative comparison of the two imaging modalities, and (b) to determine the different factors that may modify the measurement of these diameters. We studied 45 patients with clinical findings

[The formation of a distraction regenerate in the experimental modelling of the shape of the spinal canal].

The process of distractive regenerates of the vertebral arch was studied histologically in mature outbred dogs in modelling of vertebral canal by G. A. Ilizarov technique. During the process of distraction regenerate was shown to have a zonal structure i.e. to include 2 bone regions and connective tissue layering. Its growth is based on the fibers of that layering. The possibility of the increase of vertebral canal sagittal diameter up to 90-100% within 2-2,5 months due to the formation of vertebral arch distractive regenerates is supported by the results of present study and opens the perspec

[Treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis with partial laminectomy and canal enlargement].

Thirty-eight patients with lumbar spinal stenosis were treated by partial laminectomy, incision of ligmental flava and canal enlargement. According to the pathological characteristic of lumbar spinal stenosis, both decompression and stability of the lumbar spine would be achieved by limited surgical treatment to the pathological segment and removing of any pathological factors. The average time for follow-up is 14 months. The excellent rate is 89.5%. The technique of the operation was also described and discussed.

Epidermoid tumor: an unusual cause of ossification within the spinal canal.

Epidermoid tumors of the spinal canal are rare. We report two patients with intraspinal lesions and radiographically evident calcification. One proved to have an epidermoid tumor. Although the tissue diagnosis in the second was not definitive, it suggested an epidermoid tumor as well. Radiographically visible ossification or calcification has not been reported before in intraspinal epidermoids.

Value of ultrasonic measurement of spinal canal diameter in general practice.

The diameter of the spinal canal was measured by ultrasonic scanning in 193 patients with back pain and 193 matched controls. The spinal canal was found to be significantly narrower in the patients compared with all 193 controls (p less than 0.01) and compared with 132 of the controls with no history of back pain (p less than 0.001), but measurement of canal size was found not to have any value in the prognosis or management of back pain in general practice.

[Morphological changes of the cervical spinal canal and cord due to aging].

UNLABELLED: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy is a condition in which degenerative changes of the cervical vertebral bodies and the intervertebral discs cause disturbances to the spinal cord either by direct mechanical compression or by disturbing the blood supply. There have been a number of studies on roentgenological measurements of the anteroposterior (AP) diameter of the cervical spinal canal relating to the disorder. However, there are only a few reports concerning the shape and the size of the spinal canal and the spinal cord. Murone reported that the cervical spinal canal of Japanese was…

Constitutional narrowness of the lumbar spinal canal and cheiro-lumbar dysostosis.

The author reports a further case of cheirolumbar dysostosis (associated of Verbiest's constitutional narrowness of the lumbar canal and short and broad phalanges and metacarpals) and a case with multiple malformations including both the narrow lumbar canal and brachycheiry and also several other malformations of the bones. The author discusses the nosography of Verbiest's syndrome with regard to cheirolumbar dysostosis and to more complex and diffuse malformations.

[Clinical picture of diskopathy in patients with narrow lumbar spinal canal].

In a group of 400 patients operated upon at the Department of Neurology, Institute of Rheumatology in Warsaw in the years 1971-1978 for lumbar intervertebral disc prolapse in 20 cases (5%) canal stenosis was found as the cause of vertebral canal narrowing. Three clinical syndromes were isolated in this group: cauda equina intermittent claudication (4 cases), flaccid paraparesis of lower extremities (3 cases) and ischialgia with paralysis of an extremity (13 cases). The clinical and radiological features and pathogenetic factors in stenosis of the lower part of the vertebral canal are discussed

Evaluation of the central canal of the spinal cord in experimentally induced hydrocephalus.

The central canal of the spinal cord has been proposed as a significant compensatory alternative pathway of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow in hydrocephalus. Ten dogs were made hydrocephalic by a relatively atraumatic experimental model that simulates the human circumstance of chronic communicating hydrocephalus. The central canal was studied by histopathology and compared with 10 normal control dogs. In both groups the central canal of the spinal cord was normal in size, configuration, and histological appearance. In this experimental model dilatation of the canal and increased movement of CSF

[Constitutional narrowing of the cervical spinal canal. Radiological and clinical findings].

A constitutional narrowing of the cervical spinal canal was seen in 31 patients with neurological disorders. The ratio of the inner diameter of the spinal canal to the diameter of the vertebral body was smaller than 1 (normal greater than 1). Clinical signs were observed from 45 years upwards where reactivedegenerative changes cause additional narrowing. The majority of patients were male, predominantly heavy manual labourers. There is often a trauma preceding. On myelography multilocular deformations of the spinal subarachnoid space and nerve roots are seen. On the mechanical narrowing of the…

Transabdominal ultrasound measurement of the lumbar spinal canal. Its value for evaluation of lumbar spinal stenosis.

Lumbar spinal stenosis, most commonly caused by hypertrophic changes in the soft tissues of the spinal canal, is itself a clinical entity, but in the early phase it can also serve as a factor influencing general back disorder morbidity. It can be identified reliably by measuring the anteroposterior diameter of the dural sac on myelography films and/or the transverse area of the dural sac on computed tomography (CT) scans. In the present study, 76 patients with general back disorders were examined with ultrasound (US) transabdominally through the intervertebral disc. In those 50 patients (66%) …

Sublaminar Decompression: A New Technique for Spinal Canal Decompression in the Treatment of Stenosis in Degenerative Spinal Conditions.

STUDY DESIGN: Technical report and case illustration. OBJECTIVE: To review the rationale and steps for a sublaminar decompression in the setting of adult deformity surgery and in degenerative spondylosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Several variations of lumbar laminotomy and posterior decompressions have been reported, although these are primarily in the setting of isolated lumbar stenosis, and often focus on treatment of central stenosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our operative technique is illustrated and 1 patient with a 1-year follow-up is presented to further describe this surgical appro

A case of extensive spinal cysticercosis involving the whole spinal canal in a patient with a history of cerebral cysticercosis.

Although cysticercosis is the most common parasitic disease affecting the central nervous system, spinal cysticercosis is rare. A rare form of spinal cysticercosis involving the whole spinal canal is presented. A 45-year-old Korean male had a history of intracranial cysticercosis and showed progressive paraparesis. Spinal magnetic resonance scan showed multiple cysts compressing the spinal cord from C1 to L1. Three different levels (C1-2, T1-3, and T11-L1) required operation. Histopathological examination confirmed cysticercosis. The patient improved markedly after surgery.
