Injury to the spinal cord often results in abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, or scoliosis, that is associated with neuromuscular weakness. The lateral curvature of the spine is thought to be a consequence of insufficient or asymmetrical loading of the vertebrae. To study neuromuscular scoliosis, an animal model of spinal cord injury was used in which the spinal cord was partially (3/4) transected, with the left lateral columns left intact. Partial transection of the spinal cord in the rat caused scoliosis that was maximal four to five vertebrae distal to the lesion site. As in previous

BACKGROUND: The mechanical properties of muscles and their interactions with three-dimensional spinal deformities are difficult to quantify with a single method. This study aimed to quantitatively characterize the paraspinal muscle groups in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) using multimodal methods.
METHODS: The patients with AIS who received corrective surgery at our hospital from June 1, 2025, to August 31, 2025 were enrolled in this prospective study. Two independent evaluators used 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and digital radiography (DR) to analyze parameters in the bilater

BACKGROUND: Camptocormia (CC) is the forward-bending of the spine of more than 30 degrees that can be found in Parkinson's disease (PD) as a disabling complication. Detection of changes in paraspinal lumbar musculature in CC is of value for choosing treatment strategies.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether these changes can be detected using muscle ultrasonography (mUSG).
METHODS: Age and sex-matched groups comprised 17 PD patients with CC (seven acute, PD-aCC; 10 chronic PD-cCC), 19 PD patients with no CC, and 18 healthy controls (HC). Lumbar paravertebral muscles (LPM) on both sides were ass

Axial postural abnormalities and pain are two main determinants of poor quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Indeed, a detailed characterization of pain and other non-motor symptoms in patients with PAs has not been provided yet. The aim of this study is to assess the phenomenology of pain and other non-motor symptoms in PD patients with Pisa syndrome and camptocormia compared to PD patients without axial postural abnormality. Forty-five PD participants were equally distributed in three groups: patients with Pisa syndrome (PS), patients with Camptocormia (CC), and patient

BACKGROUND: There are no studies comparing the morphologic changes of lumbar spines between supine axial-loaded and 90° standing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations of patients with spinal stenosis.
PURPOSE: To determine whether axial-loaded MRI using a compression device demonstrated similar morphology of intervertebral disc, dural sac, and spinal curvature as those detected by 90° standing MRI in individuals with suspected spinal stenosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 54 individuals suspected of having spinal stenosis underwent both axial-loaded and standing MRI studies. The

PURPOSE: Surgical adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) management can be associated with loss of thoracic kyphosis and a secondary loss of lumbar lordosis leading to iatrogenic flatback. Such conditions are associated with poorer clinical outcomes during adulthood. The aim of this study was to evaluate sagittal plane reciprocal changes after posterior spinal fusion in the setting of AIS.
METHODS: Thirty consecutive adolescents (mean age 14.6 years) with AIS Lenke 1, 2 or 3 were included in this retrospective study with 2 year follow-up. Full-spine standing coronal and lateral radiographs wer

Camptocormia (CC) is defined as a trunkal flexion which worsens while standing, sitting and walking and disappears in the supine position. CC is a well-known clinical phenomenon in patients with generalized neuromuscular disorders like polymyositis, myasthenia gravis or motor neuron diseases, and it is also described in the context of movement disorders like Parkinson's disease (PD) or multiple system atrophy. In association with PD, CC seems to be a rare symptom which occurs preferentially in late stages of the disease. Currently, there are 3 main hypotheses on the pathogenesis of CC in PD, i

Children with progressive neurological conditions such as spinal muscular atrophy, Friedreich's ataxia, familial dysautonomia (Riley-Day syndrome), and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease have a significant risk of acquiring a serious spinal deformity. As with paralytic scoliosis following poliomyelitis, the curves are difficult to control with bracing, and progression does not cease with maturation. An increasing spinal curvature may lead to loss of ambulation or, for the wheelchair-bound patient, loss of sitting balance. The curvature may further compromise pulmonary function that may already be com

Thoracolumbar spinal deformities are a pervasive condition affecting the adolescent and adult patient population. These deformities represent three-dimensional alterations in the coronal, sagittal, and transverse planes with implication on the local, regional, and global alignment. With continued studies, the importance of the overall correction on long-term outcomes has been established. Surgical techniques for correcting deformities aim to restore coronal and sagittal alignment of the spine, as well as manage the rotational components in the transverse plane. Through a proper understanding o

BACKGROUND: Camptocormia is a trunk flexion occurring during walking that the patient can spontaneously correct in a static position. Therefore, capturing the flexed trunk posture on radiograph is difficult.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the interrater reliability in different positions reflecting the dynamic phenomenon of camptocormia using a non-invasive visual three-dimensional capture tool.
METHODS: Sample size calculation was at least 31 participants. 34 patients who had camptocormia and were monitored in our clinical practice were included. Two different examiners performed measurements using

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Axial postural abnormalities, mainly involving the spinal deformities, are disabling symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the prevalence of axial postural abnormalities in PD and their clinical correlates remain unclear. The present study aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of overall and subtypes of axial postural abnormalities in PD.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane databases were searched up to 31st March, 2022. We identified studies that reported the prevalence of axial postural abnormalities in PD.

This study was aimed at describing a case series of brachio-cervical inflammatory myopathy (BCIM) associated with systemic sclerosis (SSc), due to its rarity and limited coverage in published data. Another aim was to provide a literature review. We reported four cases of BCIM-SSc from our tertiary center. In addition, we researched the literature and found six articles featuring 17 patients who fit this phenotype. We pooled all cases and reported their features. Most patients were female and had limited SSc, and the median time of BCIM presentation was three years after SSc diagnosis. Asymmetr

PURPOSE: To investigate the biomechanical effects of anterior column realignment (ACR) and pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) on local lordosis correction, primary stability and rod strains.
METHODS: Seven cadaveric spine segments (T12-S1) underwent ACR at L1-L2. A stand-alone hyperlordotic cage was initially tested and then supplemented with posterior bilateral fixation. The same specimens already underwent a PSO at L4 stabilized by two rods, a supplemental central rod (three rods) and accessory rods (four rods) with and without adjacent interbody cages (La Barbera in Eur Spine J 27(9):2357

PURPOSE: Most patients suffering from Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit alterations in the posture, which can in several cases give rise to spine deformities, both in the sagittal and the coronal plane. In addition, degenerative disorders of the spine frequently associated to PD, such as spinal stenosis and sagittal instability, can further impact the quality of life of the patient. In recent years, spine surgery has been increasingly performed, with mixed results. The aim of this narrative review is to analyze the spinal disorders associated to PD, and the current evidence about their surgical
