Self-injurious movements, common in persons diagnosed with Tourette syndrome, or mental retardation, are typically difficult to eliminate. The author considers the possibility that certain self-injurious movements are involuntary phenomena. An anatomical analysis of high-frequency movements in a patient with severe head slapping is presented by tracing the muscles and nerves involved. The median nerve innervates muscles that bring the hand/arm to the head and also muscles that control this patient's other frequent movements, viz., pill-rolling, thumb-gouging, wrist-flapping, and pinching the n

A commonly used animal model for tardive dyskinesia is the oral stereotypy that is expressed by a challenge dose of a dopamine agonist after daily administration of dopamine antagonists (neuroleptics). In the first of two experiments the expression of this dopamine agonist-induced oral stereotypy was prevented by the concomitant administration of the opiate antagonist naloxone. In a second experiment, if the stereotypy was allowed to be expressed, it could be blocked by the administration of naloxone. To the extent that the effects of chronic neuroleptic treatment in rats is a model for tardiv

To assess similarity between gender-role stereotypes and the personality disorder prototypes, university students (31 women and 13 men) were asked to assign gender to six descriptions of DSM-III--R personality disorders. Significant agreement was found in gender assignment for five of the six descriptions. Descriptions of the paranoid, antisocial, and compulsive personality disorders were viewed as male, and descriptions of the dependent and histrionic personality disorders were viewed as female. The description of schizoid personality disorder was not significantly gender-typed.

Eleven residents receiving long-term thioridazine treatment were studied while receiving their previous dose, standardized low and high doses (1.25 and 2.50 mg/kg per day), and placebo conditions. For theoretical reasons, subjects were also classified by degree of stereotypic behavior on the Fairview Problem Behavior Checklist (Barron & Sandman, 1983). Ratings of hyperactivity and self-injury were significantly lower during the higher as compared with the lower dose condition. Subjects classified as in the high-stereotypy group had significantly and substantially higher levels of maladaptive b

There is developed Bertalanffy's theory of systems on the evolution process of biological stereotypes (theory of Mârza, Repciuc, Eskenasy 1962) and the systemic theory nomenclature used in biology is critically discussed. A more complete definition of the reactivity is attempted. Biological stereotypes are analogous to the Pavlovian absolute reflexes and represent specialized and integrated parts of the reactivity, which forms a unity of contraries with the metabolism. There is considered that a biological stereotypes achieves to form a system when the specific organ is differentiated. On this

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is characterized by a highly biased B-cell receptor (BcR) immunoglobulin repertoire and by recurrent stereotyped receptors defined as quasi-identical BcR recurring in unrelated patients. High-throughput sequencing studies have shown that immunoglobulin rearrangements resembling these CLL stereotypes can also be detected in healthy individuals. Beyond their relevance to leukemogenesis, these findings provide a distinctive opportunity to investigate how recurrent BcR configurations are generated, selected, and maintained during normal B-cell development. PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Shaped by societal emphasis on thinness, individuals with obesity encounter stereotypes, bias, and prejudice (SBP), which have been documented among healthcare professionals. This study examined obesity-related SBP among dental professionals in an academic setting, hypothesizing patterns similar to healthcare workers.
METHODS: Faculty, staff, graduate students/residents, and students affiliated with the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in Fall 2024 were invited. A 37-item Qualtrics survey collected demographic information and assessed obesity-related SBP using the v

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a relict species endemic to China. Captive breeding has boosted its population. However, some captive individuals exhibit stereotypic behavior. Though extensive research showing that host behavior can be influenced by gut microbiota via the gut-brain axis, the gut microbiota related to stereotypic behavior of giant pandas has not been reported. To explore gut microbial composition and functional characteristics of stereotypically behaving (SB) giant pandas, the behavior of 15 captive giant pandas was observed, and their feces were analyzed using 16S

Throughout the 20th century, women entered psychiatry, yet cinematic representations remained structured by masculinised archetypes such as Dr Evil, Dr Wonderful, and Dr Dippy. This article interrogates depictions of female psychiatrists in nineteen films and one paradigmatic television series (1935-2021) through a historically grounded qualitative analysis. It identifies two gendered figures - Dr Correction and Dr Trapped - that reconfigure the masculine triad into a moral continuum of care, control and vulnerability. By situating these tropes within psychiatry's shifting professional and mor

Prejudice and stereotypes are central constructs in social psychology, yet instruments used to measure them vary in conceptual clarity and psychometric evidence. This preregistered systematic review provides a comprehensive, cross-method synthesis of the psychometric properties and theoretical foundations of measures assessing racial and ethnic prejudice and stereotypes. Following PRISMA and COSMIN guidelines, we screened 13,363 records and included 263 studies published between 1951 and 2024. We evaluated reliability, validity, factor structure, measurement invariance and conceptual alignment

Visual impairment is one of the most common and clinically salient manifestations of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), yet pathology across visual system structures remains incompletely defined. Although MS pathology has been extensively studied in the optic nerve, lateral geniculate nucleus, and visual cortex, involvement of the superior colliculus (SC), a key hub for visual processing, has not been systematically investigated. Here, we combined human postmortem tissue analysis with functional assessment and spatial mapping in the MS-relevant cuprizone (CPZ) mouse model to define how demyelination and

How are societal stereotypes transmitted to individual-level group preferences? We propose that exposure to a stereotype, regardless of whether one agrees with it, can shape how one experiences and learns from interactions with members of the stereotyped group, such that it induces individual-level prejudice-a process involving the interplay of semantic knowledge and instrumental learning. In a series of experiments, participants interacted with players from two groups, described with either positive or negative stereotypes, in a reinforcement learning (RL) task presented as a money-sharing ga

OBJECTIVE: Given the concerning rise in hate crimes in recent years, it is critical to better understand factors associated with racist beliefs. As suggested by terror management theory (TMT), trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) may activate existential distress and anxiety, which may strengthen worldviews, including prejudiced beliefs (Greenberg & Kosloff, 2008; Weise et al., 2012). Although PTSS include negative alterations in beliefs about other people and the world, the connection between trauma and racist beliefs has not been investigated. There may also be key differ

Media representations play an important role in producing sociocultural pressures. Despite social and legal progress in civil rights, restrictive gender-based representations appear to be still very pervasive in some contexts. The article explores scientific research on the relationship between media representations and gender stereotypes, objectification and sexualization, focusing on their presence in the cultural context. Results show how stereotyping, objectifying and sexualizing representations appear to be still very common across a number of contexts. Exposure to stereotyping representa…

Ants communicate via large arrays of pheromones and possess expanded, highly complex olfactory systems, with antennal lobes in the brain comprising up to ∼500 glomeruli. This expansion implies that odors could activate hundreds of glomeruli, which would pose challenges for higher-order processing. To study this problem, we generated transgenic ants expressing the genetically encoded calcium indicator GCaMP in olfactory sensory neurons. Using two-photon imaging, we mapped complete glomerular responses to four ant alarm pheromones. Alarm pheromones robustly activated ≤6 glomeruli, and activity m

Bacterial evolution of antibiotic resistance frequently has deleterious side effects on microbial growth, virulence, and susceptibility to other antimicrobial agents. However, it is unclear how these trade-offs could be utilized for manipulating antibiotic resistance in the clinic, not least because the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. Using laboratory evolution, we demonstrate that clinically relevant resistance mutations in Escherichia coli constitutively rewire a large fraction of the transcriptome in a repeatable and stereotypic manner. Strikingly, lineages adapted to

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (iPD) is associated with two distinct brain networks, PD-related pattern (PDRP) and PD-related cognitive pattern (PDCP), which correlate respectively with motor and cognitive symptoms. The relationship between the two networks in individual patients is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a consistent relationship exists between these networks, we measured the difference between PDRP and PDCP expression, termed delta, on an individual basis in independent populations of patients with iPD (n = 356), patients with idiopathic REM sleep behavioral di

Recent research on the practices of justice operators with women victims of intimate partner violence has evidenced the existence of gender stereotypes and gender-blind practices in the Spanish legal system (Albertín et al., 2020; García Jiménez et al., 2019, 2020), as well as the graves consequences that such practices imply for these women. In this context, the present study explored the existence of a battered woman stereotype and its variation when the victim defends herself from the abuser. An opportunity sample of 505 undergraduates of Law, Psychology and other studies from two Spanish u
