OBJECTIVE: To describe major epidemiologic and placental findings regarding stillbirth in Vietnam.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of all stillbirths in a tertiary referral facility in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, was performed. Detailed examination of each infant, placental pathology, and semi-structured maternal interviews were conducted according to the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand Perinatal Death Classification guidelines. AIMS: To investigate the relation between social deprivation and causes of stillbirth and infant mortality.
METHODS: Stillbirths and infant deaths in 6347 enumeration districts in Wales were linked with the Townsend score of social deprivation. In 1993-98 there were 211 072 live births, 1147 stillbirths, and 1223 infant deaths. The loss of a baby through stillbirth is a tragic, devastating experience for a woman and her family. Although well intentioned, physicians and nurses are often ill-prepared to provide essential emotional support. We would like to describe our experience with a multidisciplinary perinatal grief support team. In our hospital, such a team has, in part, corrected deficits in the care of these families and has functioned as an invaluable source of education and support for health care providers.

A case of listeriosis in a stillborn baby is described. The causative organism was isolated from lung, placenta, and meconium. The only manifestation of infection of the baby's mother was a slight pyrexia three days before delivery which subsided quickly after treatment with ampicillin. Examination of the mother 11 days after delivery failed to produce evidence of listerial infection.
