Transport of L-lysine by a cultured placental trophoblast cell line was investigated by characterization of L-[3H]lysine uptake. In the mononuclear form of the BeWo clone b30 choriocarcinoma cell, at least two sodium-independent systems are present. The properties of purified hydrogenase [EC 1.12.2.1] solubilized from particulate fraction of sonicated Desulfovibrio vulgaris cells are described. The enzyme was a brownish iron-sulfur protein of molecular weight 89,000, composed of two different subunits (mol. wt.: 28,000 and 59,000), and it contained 7-9 iron atoms and 7-8 labile sulfide ions. The uptake of cortisol by isolated rat liver cells was studied. The nuclei of Plasmodium yoelii nigeriensis contain an enzyme, ADP-ribosyltransferase, that will incorporate the ADP-ribose moiety of NAD+ into acid-insoluble product. The time, pH and temperature optima of this incorporation are 30 min, 8.5 and 25 degrees C respectively. Maximum stimulation of the enzyme activity is obtained with 1.0 mM-dithiothreitol or 2.0 mM-2-mercaptoethanol.
