Assessing leptospirosis and toxoplasmosis seropositivity in wild boars (Sus scrofa): Implications for public and animal health in Southern Brazil.

Leptospirosis and toxoplasmosis are re-emerging zoonosis caused by infection with pathogenic spirochaetes of Leptospira and the protozoa Toxoplasma gondii, respectively. Wild boars (Sus scrofa), an exotic invasive species in Brazil, could play a role in the diseases' epidemiological cycles, but this issue is still unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the Leptospira spp. and T. gondii seropositivity in wild boars in Rio Grande do Sul state, south Brazil. Of evaluated animals, 16% (13/80) and 85% (52/61) had antibodies to T. gondii and Leptospira spp., respectively. Sex, weight, age, hunt lo

Lactobacilli Isolated From Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) Antagonize Mycobacterium bovis Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) in a Species-Dependent Manner.

Background: Wildlife poses a significant burden for the complete eradication of bovine tuberculosis (bTB). In particular, wild boar (Sus scrofa) is one of the most important reservoirs of Mycobacterium bovis, the causal agent of bTB. Wild boar can display from mild TB lesions, usually found in head lymph nodes, to generalized TB lesions distributed in different anatomical regions; but rarely clinical signs, which complicates the diagnosis of Mycobacterium bovis infection and bTB control. Among the possibilities for this variability in lesion distribution is the influence of the host-beneficial

Cantrell Syndrome (Thoracoabdominal Ectopia Cordis; Anomalous Umbilical Cord; Diaphragmatic, Pericardial and Intracardiac Defects) in the Pig (Sus scrofa domesticus).

Pentalogy of Cantrell (PC) is a complex body wall defect, involving the abdominal wall, sternum, diaphragm, pericardium and heart. We report on six stillborn piglets with anomalous umbilical cord (UC), cranio-umbilical abdominal defect, cleft sternum, incomplete diaphragm and pericardium, ectopia cordis and intracardiac anomalies. Anomalous UC was defined as a single umbilical artery (SUA) and/or short cord, or as an UC with atypical coiling pattern. The embryonic period, in which all the anomalies found in these piglets develops, coincides with that of UC formation in the pig. We propose that

Prevalence of infection and genetic diversity of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) in wild boar (Sus scrofa) in Poland.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is a widespread, important pathogen of domestic swine and the causative agent of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome and other diseases and conditions referred to as "porcine circovirus diseases." Specific antibodies and DNA to PCV2 have also been detected in European wild boars and North American feral pigs. We collected 312 tonsil samples from wild boars shot in 13 of 16 districts of Poland, and tested them for PCV2 DNA using a real-time PCR. We detected PCV2 DNA in 75.6% of tested tonsils, and in particular, in 60% of samples from the 2006-07 season,

Experimental infection of wild boars (Sus scrofa) with Rickettsia rickettsii and evaluation of the transmission potential to Amblyomma sculptum ticks.

BACKGROUND: Brazilian spotted fever is a tick-borne disease caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii, whose main vector in Brazil is the tick Amblyomma sculptum. Amplifying hosts are essential for the perpetuation of this bacterium in the tick population as they can be sources of infection during bacteremic periods. Recent studies demonstrated the ability of suids (Sus scrofa) to sustain populations of A. sculptum, one of the main tick species found parasitizing wild boars in the midwestern and southeastern regions of Brazil. In this study, wild boars were experimentally infected with R.

Agonic Aspiration of Blood: Not Useful as an Animal-Based Indicator of Electrical Stunning Ineffectiveness in Pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus).

Agonic aspiration of blood (AAB) may result from an inadequate exsanguination with accidental trachea severing, that can be favoured by ineffective stunning of pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus). This study aimed to evaluate AAB as an animal-based indicator of electrical stunning ineffectiveness, which could be used by official veterinarians during the post-mortem inspection of pigs. Information on 3584 finishing pigs was collected at a Portuguese abattoir that performs head-to-body electrical stunning with horizontal bleeding. Of them, 15.5% of the pigs presented signs of ineffective stunning. AAB

Trichinella infection in wild boars (Sus scrofa) from a protected area of Argentina and its relationship with the presence of humans.

In Argentina, Trichinella infection has been documented in humans and animals of several provinces since 1930. This zoonotic parasite infection has been recently detected in humans and pigs of a region historically considered as Trichinella-free, suggesting the spread of these pathogens. The aim of the present work was to investigate the presence of Trichinella infection in wild boars (Sus scrofa) and in the human population living in a protected area. Trichinella infection has been investigated by serology (in humans and wild boars) and by artificial digestion of wild boar muscles. The isolat

Developmental Differences in the Organ-Specific Distribution of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in Free-Ranging Wild Boar (Sus scrofa).

Wild boar (Sus scrofa) have been used as sentinel species for monitoring environmental metal contamination; however, developmental variation in internal metal distribution remains poorly understood in free-ranging wildlife. Here, we investigated organ-specific distribution patterns of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) by explicitly comparing fetal and non-fetal wild boar collected in western Japan. A total of 13 individuals, including eight fetuses from two pregnant females, the two pregnant females, one adult male, and two juveniles, were analyzed. Metal concentrations were

ADMET parameters of tacrine and its metabolites confirm unsuitability of Sus scrofa f. domestica model to study tacrine-associated hepatotoxicity.

Tacrine, the first approved drug against Alzheimer's disease (AD), was withdrawn from clinical use due to serious adverse effects. The main concern was the human hepatotoxicity, stemming probably from the liver biotransformation and clinically manifested as hepatocellular necrosis, and lobular hepatitis. Concerning the biotransformation, 7-OH-tacrine metabolite is generally suspected of being a precursor of toxic quinone methide, which binds to intracellular -SH proteins and/or depletes intracellular glutathione, and by that probably causes the hepatotoxicity. However, to study these toxic eff

Onchocerca takaokai n. sp. (Nematoda: Filarioidea) in Japanese wild boars (Sus scrofa leucomystax): Description and molecular identification of intradermal females.

Human zoonotic onchocercosis is caused by Onchocerca dewittei japonica, parasitic in wild boars (Sus scrofa leucomystax) in Japan. Previously, microfilariae longer than those of Onchocerca dewittei japonica were observed in skin snips from wild boars during the study of O. dewittei japonica. Moreover, the third-stage larvae (L3) of these longer microfilariae were obtained from the blackfly Simulium bidentatum after experimental injections. Based on morphometric and molecular studies, similar L3 were found in blackflies during fieldwork in Oita, Japan. However, except for O. dewittei japonica,

Mitsuokella apri sp. nov., a novel species of the family Selenomonadaceae isolated from faeces of a wild boar (Sus scrofa).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, obligately anaerobic strain, designated WILCCON 0060T, was isolated from the faecal sample of a wild boar (Sus scrofa) collected on the Island of Ubin (Pulau Ubin), Singapore (1.4126°N, 103.9577°E). Phylogenetic and comparative analyses based on 16S rRNA gene and whole-genome sequences indicated that strain WILCCON 0060T belongs to the genus Mitsuokella, within the family Selenomonadaceae. Notably, the average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain WILCCON 0060T and the type strains of two existing Mitsuokella species, Mit

Sero-epidemiological investigation on Toxoplasma gondii infection in Apennine wolf (Canis lupus italicus) and wild boar (Sus scrofa) in Italy.

BACKGROUND: The wild boar (Sus scrofa) and the Apennine wolf (Canis lupus italicus) are two wild species that have both increased their presence in the Italian territory, albeit in varying numbers. They can be occasionally found in peri-urban areas as well. Both of these species can serve as intermediate hosts for Toxoplasma gondii, as they can become infected either through the consumption of oocysts found in water, soil, or on vegetables, or through the ingestion of meat containing bradyzoites. Consequently, these animals can be regarded as key indicators of Toxoplasma presence in the wild o

Long-Term Serological Investigations of Influenza A Virus in Free-Living Wild Boars (Sus scrofa) from Northern Italy (2007-2014).

Influenza A viruses (IAV) have been repeatedly demonstrated to circulate in wild suid populations. In this study, serum samples were collected from 2618 free-ranging wild boars in a protected area of Northern Italy between 2007 and 2014, and firstly screened by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the presence of antibodies against IAV. The ELISA-positive samples were further tested by hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assays performed using antigen strains representative of the four major swine IAV (sIAV) lineages circulating in Italy: avian-like swine H1N1, pandemic-like swine H1N1,
