A method for the preparation of purified suspensions of Coxiella burneti by Genetron extraction followed by continuous-flow density gradient ultracentrifugation is described. Both phases of the Henzerling strain of C. burneti were found in a zone between 53 and 65% (w/w) sucrose. Based on chemical assays, the Genetron zonal rickettsial suspensions were found to be as pure as the rickettsial suspensions which were prepared by the ether extraction method currently in use for producing Q fever vaccines for human use.

Recent developments in the treatment of vitiligo focus on minimizing adverse effects while also reducing the overall treatment duration. This work aimed to compare the advantages and limitations of epidermal cell transplantation versus combined epidermal and follicular cell transplantation in the treatment of stable vitiligo. This study was conducted on 20 vitiligo patients, aged between 15 and 50 years, all of whom presented with symmetrical lesions. The first lesion was treated with epidermal cell suspension (ECS), while the second lesion received a combined treatment of ECS and follicular c

A woman in her 40s presented on post-operative day 2 following vaginal hysterectomy and uterosacral ligament suspension (USLS) with severe abdominal pain, distention and emesis. A distended colon was seen on CT, and rectal contrast confirmed complete obstruction at the rectosigmoid junction. She was taken urgently to the OR by the general surgery, urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery teams for flexible sigmoidoscopy and diagnostic laparoscopy, where the right-sided uterosacral stitches were found to obstruct the colon. The obstruction resolved after releasing the right uterosacral s

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to describe and evaluate a new surgical browlift technique with functional results and minimal visible scarring.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed all charts of patients who underwent the alternative browlift procedure between January 2015 and June 2019 ( n = 41). To assess the cosmetic and functional outcome after surgery, the authors contacted all operated patients to fill in a nonvalidated questionnaire.
RESULTS: The study included 29 of the 41 patients, who were treated during the period January 2015 to June 2019. The questionnaires valid

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common pelvic floor disorder (PFD) with the potential to significantly impact a woman's quality of life. Approximately 10%-20% of women undergo pelvic floor repair surgery to treat prolapse in the United States. PFD cases result in an overall $26.3 billion annual cost in the United States alone. This multifactorial condition has a negative impact on the quality of life and yet the treatment options have only dwindled in the recent past. One common surgical option is uterosacral ligament suspension (USLS), which is typically performed by affixing the vaginal vau

Cell-based vaccine manufacturing is an important strategy for viral disease prevention. Cultivating cells in suspension could maximize the utility of large bioreactors for cost-effective and scaled up vaccine production, where adapting adherent cells to suspension culture is the bottleneck and key. Through whole transcriptome sequencing of suspension and adherent strains of BHK-21 and CHO-K1 cells followed by the identification of differentially expressed genes, mutational analysis, gene ontology, and pathway enrichment analysis, we identified four candidate genes, PABPC1, LARS, GLUL, PFN1, fe

OBJECTIVE: To determine the difference in force metrics measured by the laryngeal force sensor for various suspension microlaryngoscopy (SML) procedures and their perioperative narcotic requirements.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study.
SETTING: Academic tertiary center.
METHODS: The laryngeal force sensoris a force sensor designed for SML procedures. Prospectively enrolled patients had dynamic recordings of maximum force, average force, suspension time, and total impulse. Procedures were grouped into excision of striking zone lesions, nonstriking zone lesions, endoscopic cancer s

BACKGROUND: Severe tracheobronchomalacia significantly complicates the postoperative course of infants and children with congenital heart disease, tracheoesophageal fistula, and tracheal stenosis. We have found that traditional approaches, including aortopexy, have been inconsistent in preventing acute life threatening events (ALTEs). In order to directly support the anterior tracheal wall, we have adopted the use of direct anterior tracheal suspension (ATS).
METHODS: Twenty-one children, median age 5 months (35 days to 11 years) and weight 5.0 (2.3 to 28.0) kg have undergone anterior trachea

Suspension laryngoscopy is a common laryngeal procedure in Endolaryngeal microsurgery (ELMS). Oral mucosa and dental injuries are the known complications of the procedure. Nerve injury however is an infrequent encounter. We report a rare complication of lingual nerve injury which manifested as tongue numbness and altered taste following Endolaryngeal microsurgery procedure. The condition improved completely after few months of conservative management.

BACKGROUND: In stable vitiligo, several techniques of autologous transplantation of melanocytes are used. Autologous melanocyte transplantation of non-cultured melanocytes is one of those techniques with variable reported outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the response to autologous melanocyte-keratinocytes suspension transplantation in cases of stable vitiligo.
METHODS: A total of 25 cases of vitiligo were treated by autologous melanocyte-keratinocytes suspension transplantation. After 6-17 months, patients' response was evaluated according to the extent of pig

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of the Mitek minianchor suture system as an adjunctive procedure for static facial suspension and assess its ability to improve functional and aesthetic outcomes in patients with complete facial paralyses.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 5 patients who underwent adjunctive static facial suspension with the Mitek GII minianchor suture system at a tertiary care academic center. A bone anchor in the maxilla connected to 2 suture arms was used. One suture arm elevated the oral commissure on the paralyzed side. The second suture arm adjusted for upper lip seg

Submandibular gland suspension, a procedure designed to complement surgical rejuvenation of the aging neck, uses largely blunt dissection and suspension to the mandibular periosteum to elevate the gland, improving neck contour without excision of submandibular gland tissue. Although there is an increase in operative time, the risk of intraoperative and postoperative bleeding problems is very low, and the authors report high patient satisfaction.

PURPOSE: To investigate if a suspension made with amniotic membrane could have a beneficial effect on ocular surface diseases.
METHODS: In the Imola branch of the Eye Bank of Emilia Romagna, the authors prepared a suspension containing homogenized amniotic membrane previously conserved at -80 degrees Celsius. Subsequently, the authors gave this preparation to 21 patients: 8 had undergone lamellar keratoplasty, 4 had undergone penetrating keratoplasty, 2 had undergone photorefractive keratectomy with a delay of epithelialization, 3 had neurotrophic corneal ulcers, 2 had corneal burning, 1 had

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to evaluate the oropharyngeal complications of suspension laryngoscopy (SL).
METHODS: We prospectively analyzed 56 consecutive SLs for intervention-related complications. Oropharyngeal symptoms and physical examination abnormalities were recorded before and after SL. SL-related problems were graded in severity and followed over time (weekly) until resolution was achieved. All patients had SL with either a gallows suspension or a manual technique and not a rotation-oriented (fulcrum) laryngoscope holding device.
RESULTS: Oropharyngeal minor complications aft

Lingual nerve injury is an uncommon complication of laryngoscopy. We report a case of isolated unilateral lingual nerve injury that occurred during suspension microlaryngoscopy. The injury was transient, with complete return of sensation within 3 months after surgery. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the occurrence of lingual nerve injury during laryngoscopy, including direct compression of the nerve caused by the laryngoscope, stretching of the nerve caused by cricoid pressure or instrumentation, and compression of the nerve between the medial and lateral pterygoid caused by m
