Idiopathic Congenital Talipes Equinovarus in Wisconsin Newborns: Incidence and Associated Risk Factors.

INTRODUCTION: Clubfoot, also known as idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus, is one of the most common pediatric deformities affecting 1 to 2 in every 1,000 live births. We sought to provide the first known analysis of incidence of clubfoot diagnoses in the most populous region of Wisconsin as well as risk factors associated with the deformity. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study on children treated for clubfoot at Children's Wisconsin from January 1, 2004, through December 31, 2018. To examine trends, we performed a linear trend of annual clubfoot births for each county covered a

Assessment of talipes equinovarus treated by Ponseti technique: three-year preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: The Ponseti method has become increasingly popular in the treatment of congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV). Current methods of assessment focus on clinical, functional and radiological outcomes which are subjective and often difficult to repeat. However, integration of biomechanical evaluation can provide objective and quantifiable analysis. This study aims to evaluate the treatment outcome of CTEV patients on the basis of long-term clinical, functional and biomechanical assessment. METHODS: Following treatment, five children with CTEV were reviewed annually for the period 2008-

Posteromedial release for idiopathic talipes equinovarus. A long-term follow-up study.

Eighteen children with 26 idiopathic talipes equinovarus deformities were treated by postermedial release (PR) in the interval between 1975 and 1980 and investigated retrospectively. Evaluations included physical examination, functional evaluation, roentgenographic evaluation, and evaluation of foot track tracing pattern. The average follow-up period was 8.2 years. Thirty percent had had previous tendo Achilles lengthenings and 15% had had previous lengthenings plus posterior capsulotomies. Based on Turco's criteria, the results of PR were graded 38.9% excellent, 26.9% good, 15.6% fair, and 18

Comparison Of Accelerated Vs Standard Ponseti Technique Among Children's Having Congenital Talipes Equinovarus.

BACKGROUND: The resurgence and long duration of treatment of the Ponseti method in recent years has been punctuated by less than favourable long-term outcomes for surgically treated feet. Objectives of the study were to compare the two treatment techniques accelerated vs standard Ponseti technique among children's having Congenital Talipes Equinovarus. METHODS: This was two years randomized control trial study carried out among total 104 idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus patients in Orthopaedics and Spine Unit, Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar. Assessment of calf volume in Congenital Talipes Equinovarus by computer analysed digital photography.

The development of evidence-based approaches to the Congenital Talipes Equinovarus (CTEV) is impaired by the diversity of assessment techniques available, many of which have not been validated. Highly objective evaluation techniques that reflect the deformity and permit comparison between studies may lack the necessary link to functional features that are paramount to the patient, namely pain and mobility. Calf wasting is an acknowledged but little investigated component of the pathology. The rapid evolution of digital photography and computerised analytical techniques has yielded an opportuni

Simultaneous correction of congenital vertical talus and talipes equinovarus using the Ponseti method.

Talipes equinovarus (clubfoot) and congenital vertical talus are commonly seen as isolated deformities in the newborn; however, the case that we described in this article entailed a classic talipes equino varus on the left and a calcaneovalgus on the right. Both deformities were successfully corrected with manipulation therapy and, ultimately, surgical release of the tendoAchillis.

Soft tissue Ilizarov correction of congenital talipes equinovarus--5 to 10 years postsurgery.

The aim of this study was to address concerns regarding maintenance of correction of foot deformity after soft tissue Ilizarov distraction in relapsed clubfeet. We retrospectively reviewed the results of Ilizarov surgery of 19 rigid clubfeet in 14 children. The postoperative follow-up was at least 5 years (range, 5-10 years). All patients were assessed using the International Clubfoot Study Group score. This is a comprehensive scoring system published in 2003, incorporating morphological, functional, and radiological assessments. Patient and parent satisfaction was also assessed. Using the Int

Mid-trimester ultrasound diagnosis of isolated talipes equinovarus: accuracy and outcome for infants.

Seventeen fetuses were diagnosed with isolated congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) on mid-trimester ultrasound at the Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, between January, 1992 and December 1995. Sixteen of the 17 cases had an amniocentesis performed and all karyotypes were normal. The remaining case was phenotypically normal, except for a clubfoot. None of the pregnancies was complicated by any of the recognized intrauterine environmental causes of CTEV. Four of the babies were delivered prematurely and all survived the neonatal period. Six (35%) infants did not have CTEV at birth, although 2

Isolated and Syndromic Talipes Equinovarus in Children: Differences in Clinical Presentation and Quality of Life.

OBJECTIVE: Talipes equinovarus (TEV) is a congenital foot deformity that can present either in an isolated form or as part of a syndromic condition. In syndromic TEV, dysmorphic features, systemic anomalies, and developmental delay are more frequently observed. This study aims to evaluate the differences in clinical characteristics, dysmorphic findings, and quality of life between isolated and syndromic forms of TEV in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety TEV patients (37 syndromic, 53 isolated) diagnosed between 2010 and 2022 were included. Demographic and clinical data were retrospective

Calf circumferences in fetuses and neonates with and without talipes equinovares. A prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Children and adults with talipes equinovarus (TEV) have smaller calves and shorter feet compared to non-affected controls. Do these changes have a prenatal onset? METHODS: A prospective cohort study (January 2020-July 2021) was conducted with serial ultrasonographic measurements at 20 and 28 weeks gestation and measurements directly and 6 weeks after birth. Calf circumference and width, foot length and length of humerus, ulna, radius, femur, tibia and fibula were measured in TEV and were compared to a control population. Calculated sample size necessitated a minimal population of 1

The outcomes of idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus : a core outcome set for research and treatment.

AIMS: To identify the minimum set of outcomes that should be collected in clinical practice and reported in research related to the care of children with idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV). METHODS: A list of outcome measurement tools (OMTs) was obtained from the literature through a systematic review. Further outcomes were collected from patients and families through a questionnaire and interview process. The combined list, as well as the appropriate follow-up timepoint, was rated for importance in a two-round Delphi process that included an international group of orthopaedic s

Does the Ponseti technique affect the vascular development in patients with congenital talipes equinovarus?

In this study, we have evaluated the changes observed in the main arteries of the foot before and after the Ponseti technique. Arterial structures of seven patients were examined using Doppler ultrasound and the parameters studied included the course of the arteries, lumen filling, flow direction, pattern, and velocity. Before the treatment, the side with congenital talipes equinovarus deformity showed decreased blood flow in all arteries, except for the posterior tibial artery. At the second examination, the increase in the flow velocity of both arteries except tibialis anterior arteries was

Prognostic Value of the Radiologic Appearance of the Navicular Ossification Center in Congenital Talipes Equinovarus.

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), more commonly known as clubfoot, is a deformity of the foot that is not well understood. The tarsal navicular is at the center of the disease process and exhibits abnormal development and delayed ossification. However, its role in the pathologic process is not clear. The aim of the present study was to better understand the role of the tarsal navicular in CTEV by correlating the presence of the navicular ossification center and relapse of clubfoot deformity after surgical treatment. The medical records and radiographs of 34 patients (41 feet) with surgica

A single-center prospective evaluation of the Ponseti method in nonidiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus.

BACKGROUND: The Ponseti method has revolutionized the management of idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV). However, nonidiopathic CTEV is still often primarily treated by extensive surgical soft tissue release. We believe that nonoperative treatment of these patients using the Ponseti method may give very satisfactory results. METHODS: We examined the demographics of nonidiopathic CTEV and the success of the Ponseti method in this population over a 5-year period. We treated 29 patients with 43 nonidiopathic and 97 patients with 138 idiopathic CTEV feet. Patients with nonidiopathic

Accessory soleus muscle as a cause of congenital talipes equino varus. A case report.

The authors report a case of congenital clubfoot in a one-year-old male child, in which an accessory soleus muscle was noted intraoperatively, running anteromedially to the Achilles tendon and with a distinct insertion on the postero-medial aspect of the calcaneus. Correction of the varus and equinus of the hindfoot could only be achieved after cutting the tendon of the accessory soleus muscle at its insertion on the calcaneus.

Somatosensory evoked potentials as a means of assessing neurological abnormality in congenital talipes equinovarus.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) are a very sensitive measure of the functional integrity of the neuroaxis, including peripheral and central structures. When used in diagnostic mode they can provide additional information regarding the probable areas of dysfunction. SSEPs were recorded from 44 children (64 feet with congenital talipes equinovarus, CTEV), between the ages of 2 to 15 years, who had structural CTEV deformity previously treated by surgery, with no clinical evidence of neurological deficit. SSEPs were elicited after sequential and bilateral stimulation (0.1 ms/5 Hz/10 to 20
