BackgroundBody image issues in breast cancer recovery may extend into social and professional spheres, underlining the need for complementary interventions, like nipple-areola complex (NAC) tattooing.ObjectivesThis study aims to explore the experiences of women who have undergone NAC tattooing at the ARCADE clinic in Reggio Emilia (Italy), specifically regarding motivation/expectations; perceptions of the quality of the aesthetic result and the service provided; and emotions/sensations related to the treatment experience.DesignQualitative study.MethodsData were collected between January and Ma…

INTRODUCTION: Precise geographical localisation of colonic neoplasia is a prerequisite for proper laparoscopic oncological resection. Preoperative endoscopic peri-tumoural tattoo practice is routinely recommended but seldom scrutinised.
METHODS: A retrospective review of recent consecutive patients with preoperative endoscopic lesional tattoo who underwent laparoscopic colonic resection as identified from our prospectively maintained cancer database with supplementary clinical chart and radiological, histological, endoscopic and theatre database/logbook interrogation.
RESULTS: Some 210 patie

BACKGROUND: Tattoos are an increasingly common phenomenon, with a prevalence of around 10-30 % of the population in Western countries. The "Tatou" project assessed the risks of tattooing for patients with psoriasis. The first part revealed strong opposition to tattoos in these patients on the part of dermatologists, despite fewer than a quarter of them having any personal experience of complications. The second part showed a very low rate (6.6 %) of local complications on tattoos in these patients as well as absence of severe complications. These observations led us to assess the reasons for r…

AIM: To investigate the ultrastructural appearance and the deposition pattern of dye particles in long term non-metallic corneal tattooing.
METHODS: Two tattooed human corneas were obtained by keratoplasty. One corneal button was fixed in Karnovsky's solution and the other in Trumps' solution. Both corneas were divided and processed for conventional light (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Five additional formalin fixed corneas with tattoos were retrieved from paraffin for TEM. The time between tattoo and removal of the corneal button/enucleation ranged from 7 to 61 years. All s…

PURPOSE: The frequency and safety of ear piercing and tattooing were assessed in a group of children, adolescents, and adults with congenital heart disease (CHD). Also, a group of physicians who care for adolescents and adults with CHD were surveyed for opinions and experiences regarding piercing and tattooing.
METHODS: An eight-question survey was mailed to 445 patients (181 adults and 264 children) from one center. A different five-question survey was mailed to 176 physician members of the International Society of Adult Congenital Cardiac Disease.
RESULTS: The patient survey was completed …

OBJECTIVES: We present a case of Koebnerized psoriasis following laser tattoo removal, a scenario that has not yet been reported in the current literature.
METHODS: A 39-year-old male with plaque psoriasis was treated for tattoo removal with picosecond and CO2 laser therapies. He had two sessions of combined picosecond and CO2 treatments and one session of picosecond alone.
RESULTS: One month after the third session, he developed psoriasiform changes at the treated sites, consistent with an isomorphic response, and this was confirmed on histopathological examination.
CONCLUSIONS: This case

Tattoo inflammation with uveitis (TIU) is increasingly recognised but growing case numbers have revealed substantial heterogeneity. Patients currently classified as TIU appear to include those with overt or evolving systemic sarcoidosis as well as those with isolated, pigment-associated ocular inflammation. Recognition has therefore outpaced case definition. Phenotypic imprecision has clinical and scientific implications. Sarcoidosis-associated TIU warrants multidisciplinary evaluation and longitudinal surveillance, whereas other presentations may reflect a localised pigment-driven immune resp

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) skin infections associated with tattoos and permanent makeup (PMU) have emerged as an important public hea … of infection; poor hygiene also contributed. Cutaneous symptoms typically appeared within weeks of tattooing, yet diagnostic delays were common due to nonspecific clinical presentations. Microbiological culture and molecular methods were the primary diagnostic tools. Treatment most often involved macrolide-based combination antibiotic therapy for extended …

Tattoo-associated cutaneous sarcoidosis with uveitis is a rare but potentially serious cause of intraocular inflammation that requires prolonged immunosuppressive therapy to avoid vision-threatening complications. Studies have shown that a larger proportion of patients with tattoo-associated sarcoidosis exhibit elevated ACE levels compared with those with general sarcoidosis. This is likely due to a combination of exaggerated inflammatory responses and granuloma formation at tattoo sites from a chronic foreign body reaction or immune activation. We present a case of tattoo-associated cutaneous

Complications of tattooing occur in 2% of cases and include foreign body granulomas, for which treatment options are limited and often ineffective. Allopurinol, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, is used to treat granulomatous reactions, but often leads to systemic side effects. Two recent case reports have described topical application as better tolerated. Herein, we report a patient who developed a granulomatous reaction to permanent eyebrow make-up, for which topical allopurinol achieved a satisfactory result.

Purpose: To examine an underreported and underdiagnosed phenomenon with implications for the pathophysiological mechanisms of tattoo-induced uveitis. Methods: Two cases highlighting the clinical presentation of tattoo-related uveitis were evaluated. Results: A 28-year-old man with biopsy-proven sarcoidosis and ocular manifestations presented with worsening retinal vasculitis after acquiring a red-ink tattoo. Each subsequent flare followed acquisition of a new tattoo. A 31-year-old woman without systemic sarcoidosis presented with multiple episodes of bilateral intermediate uveitis and macular

In patients who develop cutaneous inflammatory reactions following tattooing, additional studies are recommended to investigate systemic diseases such as sarcoidosis, pyoderma gangrenosum, atopic dermatitis, and neoplasms. It is important for physicians to be trained in providing appropriate care in case of complications.

BACKGROUND: Ocular and periocular tattoos, involving ink application to the eyeball or surrounding skin, have gained popularity as forms of self-expression. However, this trend raises significant concerns about potential complications that can adversely affect ocular health and esthetics. Awareness of these risks is crucial for both patients and practitioners.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was conducted, focusing on studies discussing complications related to ocular and periocular tattooing. Relevant studies were identified through the MEDLINE, PubMed, and Ovid databases. The rev…

Cutaneous sarcoidosis can manifest after doing a permanent makeup (PMU), such as tattooed eyebrows. A 41-year-old Chinese woman, with a tattoo in the eyebrows, developed yellow-brown plaques in her eyebrows for several months. A dermatopathological examination revealed non-caseating granulomas consistent with cutaneous sarcoidosis. For months, topical corticosteroids were applied, which showed little effect. Furthermore, a physical evaluation of the patient revealed no apparent involvement of other body organs except bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy with few diffuse reticulonodular opacities. O
