Head-and-neck target delineation among radiation oncology residents after a teaching intervention: a prospective, blinded pilot study.

PURPOSE: We conducted this study to determine the feasibility of incorporating a teaching intervention on target delineation into the educational curriculum of a radiation oncology residency program and to assess the short-term effects on resident skills. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The study schema consisted of a baseline evaluation, the teaching intervention, and a follow-up evaluation. At the baseline evaluation, the participants contoured three clinical tumor volumes (CTVs) (70 Gy, 59.4 Gy, and 54 Gy) on six contrast-enhanced axial computed tomography images of a de-identified patient with Sta

Three-Dimensional Printing Model Enhances Craniofacial Trauma Teaching by Improving Morphologic and Biomechanical Understanding: A Randomized Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: Teaching about craniofacial traumas is challenging given the complexity of the craniofacial anatomy and the necessity for good spatial representation skills. To solve these problems, three-dimensional printing seems to be an appropriate educative material. In this study, the authors conducted a randomized controlled trial. The authors' main objective was to compare the performance of the undergraduate medical students in an examination based on the teaching support: three-dimensionally printed models versus two-dimensional pictures. METHODS: All participants were randomly assigned

Training police officers on domestic violence and racism: challenges and strategies.

Teaching about domestic violence and racism is a formidable task that requires the inclusion of material that challenges dominant ideologies about race and gender. A recent training for police officers about domestic violence and racism serves as a good example of how challenging the task can be. Drawing from this 1-day police training, from existing pedagogical literature, and from the authors' collective experiences teaching about these issues, the authors address challenges encountered and propose strategies to mitigate them. The authors propose a multilevel approach to implementing strateg

Special educators' intentions towards supporting practice of inclusive education for students with disabilities in secondary schools in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Although teacher training institutions have introduced courses in inclusive education to equip teachers with the necessary pedagogical skills to teach in diverse classrooms, it has been argued that the services of special educators are essential when it comes to teaching students with disabilities in regular classrooms. Unfortunately, there is scant literature on the views of special educators regarding the enactment of inclusive education in sub-Saharan African countries, such as Ghana. OBJECTIVE: In an effort towards promoting inclusive education in Ghana, there has been deploym

From the laboratory to the classroom: Rethinking ERP methods in second language acquisition.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) are widely used to study second language acquisition. However, ERP research has largely remained confined to laboratory paradigms and has had limited impact on second language teaching and assessment. A case in point are early studies which have shown that language instruction can shape neural responses, yet this line of work has not been developed or applied further. Current ERP studies often rely on loosely defined constructs such as instruction and proficiency, frequently operationalized through task-internal measures that overlap with the linguistic features

Immersive virtual reality as a teaching tool in neuroanatomy: A scoping review.

Basic core courses in various undergraduate programs, such as neuroanatomy, pose a challenge for students due to the large volume and complexity of the content. In this context, educational technologies such as immersive virtual reality (IVR), which allow students to actively interact with learning materials, offer a complementary pedagogical alternative that promotes more meaningful learning. This study aimed to explore the available evidence on the use of IVR in neuroanatomy education, assessing its effectiveness through learning outcomes, as well as students' motivation and perceived learni

Measuring the effectiveness of a radiology-based lecture series on both confidence and career prospects of UK-based undergraduate medical students: a survey-based quantitative study.

AIMS: Studies investigating Radiology Teaching within the undergraduate population suggest that medical students do not feel adequately trained in radiological scan interpretation. This study aims to address this shortfall by designing and evaluating a longitudinal teaching series based upon the nationally recognised RCR Curriculum. By doing this, a framework can be provided for other centres to reproduce and develop their own teaching programme. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were pre-clinical and clinical medical students across the United Kingdom. The course consisted of 2 sessions pe

The complexity in deaf and hard-of-hearing multilingual learner education.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing Multilingual Learners (DMLs) are Deaf and hard-of-hearing students who are either born outside of the country they currently receive schooling in or have both parents born outside of that country, using a language other than the national spoken language at home. This group is growing in numbers and contributes significantly to the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in Deaf education. This systematic review synthesizes findings from 17 peer-reviewed empirical studies, identifying four educational levels relevant to DMLs: context, organization, educators, and s

[Outpatient Surgery in German ENT in Teaching Hospitals--Economic Nonsense?].

INTRODUCTION: There is an ever-increasing demand to increase efficiency and decrease costs in health care. This leads to an growing number of outpatient surgeries which are less cost effective. Especially in the setting of university teaching hospitals, this may lead to both an undersupply of qualified physicians, as well as to a worsening of clinical training of residents. In order to quantify a possible undersupply and estimate the expense of teaching residents, the time for medical procedures needs to be quantified and compared between board-certified physicians and residents. This was the
