BACKGROUND: Globally, female sex workers (FSW) are disproportionately affected by HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, uptake of STI and HIV testing services among FSW in sub-Saharan Africa remains low. We aimed to assess the effect of FSW-led peer education and text message reminders on 3-monthly syphilis and HIV testing among FSW in Uganda.
METHODS: Between September 2019 and February 2020, we implemented weekly peer education sessions and bi-monthly SMS reminders for FSW in Mbarara (intervention city). Peer education sessions were implemented by 20 FSW, who receiv

Despite knowledge of subsequent melanoma risk and the benefit of sun protection in risk reduction, melanoma survivors often do not engage in adequate sun protection and continue to sunburn at rates similar to individuals without a history of skin cancer. This novel intensive intervention provided a wearable UV sensor delivering real-time UV exposure with a smartphone and daily text messages. On days 1-10 (period 1), behavioral facilitation and outcome expectancies messages were provided. On day 10, participants reviewed and reflected on their daily UV exposure on the previous 10 days and set g

Adolescent organ transplant recipients have an increased risk of developing skin cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the technical feasibility and acceptability of short messaging service-based sun protection recommendations for adolescent patients. Sun-protective knowledge and behaviour were also evaluated using standardized questionnaires and telephone interviews. Twenty-six organ transplant recipients aged 13-22 years participated in face-to-face sun protection training. Subsequently, participants received sun protection reminders via text messages for 4 weeks. Of the participants

BACKGROUND: Patients attending for sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV testing may be at continuing risk of infection and advised to return for retesting at a later date.
OBJECTIVES: To measure the impact of short message service (SMS) text reminders on the reattendance rates of patients who require repeat STI testing.
METHODS: Reattendance rates were measured for two groups of higher risk patients: those listed for routine SMS text reminders in 2012 and a control group of patients from 2011 with the same risk profile who had not received any active recall. Reattendance was counted if i

BACKGROUND: Previous randomised controlled trials have shown that general practitioner (GP)-endorsed text message reminders can increase cervical screening attendance. Following the implementation of these reminders across routine primary care services in London (UK), we aimed to assess their effect on likelihood of cervical screening attendance when implemented at scale.
METHODS: In this retrospective secondary analysis of routinely collected data, all individuals aged 24-64 years who were eligible for cervical screening within participating GP practices in London between June 21, 2021, and

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the feasibility of both the delivery and evaluation of 'enhanced' (behaviourally informed) text message reminders containing links to existing co-designed resources supporting decision-making for people with severe mental illness (SMI) regarding attendance of cervical screening.
DESIGN: A pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT).
SETTING: 13 General Practice (GP) practices in London were recruited.
PARTICIPANTS: GP practices identified people with SMI aged 24-64 years who were overdue cervical screening. Target sample size was 120 participants (60 per arm) bas

BACKGROUND: There are high expectations that mobile health (mHealth) strategies will increase uptake of health care services, especially in resource strained settings. Our study aimed to evaluate effects of an mHealth intervention on uptake of maternal health services.
METHODS: This was an intervention cohort study conducted at six public antenatal and postnatal care clinics in inner-city Johannesburg, South Africa. The intervention consisted of twice-weekly informative and pregnancy stage-based maternal health information text messages sent to women during pregnancy until their child was one

BACKGROUND: United States guidelines recommend retesting for chlamydia (CT) and gonorrhea (GC) approximately 3 months after treatment, but adherence to these guidelines is poor.
METHODS: In May 2016, the municipal sexually transmitted disease (STD) Clinic in Seattle, WA, integrated opt-in short message system (SMS) (text message) retesting reminders for female patients into our clinic's routine electronic intake. Women were asked if they wanted to receive an SMS reminder for retesting for GC/CT in 3 months. We used Fisher exact tests to compare the proportion who returned to the clinic for re

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women worldwide. In developed countries, 80-90% of women will survive five years after diagnosis but the transition from hospital-based care to health self-management and self-efficacy can be difficult. Text messaging programs offer a simple and proven way to provide support to people with chronic diseases. This study aims to test the effectiveness of a text message support program at improving women's health self-efficacy, and physical and mental health outcomes after breast cancer treatments compared to usual care at 6-months a…

BACKGROUND: South Africa recently phased out access to free formula milk in the public sector in support of breastfeeding for women living with HIV. Few women living with HIV in South Africa choose breastfeeding and among those who do, many stop breastfeeding early. We sought to explore the feasibility of using mobile phone text messaging coupled with motivational interviewing to enhance adherence to breastfeeding practices.

Approximately one in five (19.5 %) young adults have experienced generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in the past year. Compared with other age groups, they are least likely to receive mental health treatment despite reporting greater need for these services. To address these issues, we conducted a randomized clinical trial with 102 young adults using an 8-week, automated text-message delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-txt-A) to treat GAD. We examined treatment engagement, tested treatment efficacy, and tested 3 clinical mechanisms of change. Participants were from 33 states, recruited

INTRODUCTION: Interventions to improve adherence to treatment for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) are necessary to improve treatment completion rates and optimise tuberculosis (TB) control efforts. The high prevalence of cell phone use presents opportunities to develop innovative ways to engage patients in care. A randomised controlled trial (RCT), WelTel Kenya1, demonstrated that weekly text messages improved antiretroviral adherence and clinical outcomes among patients initiating HIV treatment. The aim of this study is to determine whether the WelTel intervention can improve treatment c

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent e-cigarette use, globally and within Australia, has increased in recent years. In response, public health agencies have called for the development of education and communication programmes targeting adolescents. Despite such recommendations, few rigorous evaluations of such interventions currently exist. The main objective of this study is to examine the potential effect of a text message intervention targeting parents and adolescents on adolescent susceptibility to e-cigarette use (eg, intentions towards using e-cigarettes). Secondary objectives are to (1): examine th
