Monthly incidence of Theileria cervi and seroconversion to Babesia odocoilei in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Texas.

Monthly monitoring of fawns collected from an area in Texas endemic for Theileria cervi and Babesia odocoilei showed that transmission of T. cervi occurred during July and August, a time period consistent with the occurrence of Amblyomma americanum. Seroconversion to B. odocoilei occurred during October to December and possibly continued through January and February. The time of seroconversion was more suggestive of transmission of B. odocoilei by Ixodes scapularis than by Amblyomma americanum.

Exposure of Ankole and crossbred cattle to theileriosis in Rwanda.

Susceptible Ankole (Sanga: Bos indicus/Bos taurus) and crossbred Ankole x Jersey (B. taurus) and Ankole x Sahiwal (B. indicus) cattle derived from a farm in Rwanda with no recent history of theileriosis, were infected with Theileria parva stocks from Rwanda either by feeding infected Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks on the ears, inoculation of tick derived stabilate or natural exposure to tick challenge. The Ankole cattle originated from local stock born and bred in East Coast fever (ECF) endemic areas of Rwanda. Disease, followed by spontaneous recovery, was observed in 49 of the 72 Ankole

Identification of Babesia bovis and Cowdria ruminantium on the island of Unguja, Zanzibar.

Babesia bovis and Cowdria ruminantium were identified for the first time in cattle on Unguja Island, Zanzibar. B bovis is common and widespread, although clinical disease had not been diagnosed previously. The vector of heartwater, Amblyomma variegatum, is found throughout Unguja but C ruminantium appears to be more localised in distribution than B bovis.

Development of a rapid and highly accurate diagnostic test for detecting Theileria equi in horses using recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) combined with nucleic acid lateral flow immunoassay.

Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a protozoan disease in horses, mainly caused by Theileria equi, and is associated with non-specific signs such as fever, anemia, and edema. The lack of specific clinical signs, coupled with the high prevalence of carrier horses, highlights the critical need for a rapid and highly accurate diagnostic test for the detection of Theileria equi. Existing methods, including molecular, serological, and microscopic techniques, require specialized equipment, skilled personnel, and considerable time. The current study aims to develop a rapid and accurate assay for the detect

Epigenetic silencing of innate and adaptive immunity genes underlies the immune evasion cancer hallmark in Theileria-infected B-cells.

Cancer hallmarks are characterized by wide-scale changes in gene expression programs. Pioneering studies showed how viral oncogenes target regulatory pathways, but little is known about tumorigenic mechanisms of non-viral pathogens. Theileria annulata is an intracellular parasite (related to apicomplexa parasites causing malaria) which remarkably transforms bovine leukocytes, hijacking host signaling pathways to induce cancer phenotypes, akin to human leukemias. While some host genes contribute to the proliferative or invasive hallmark phenotypes, there is still limited comprehensive understan

Quantitative detection of Theileria haneyi in South African horses.

Theileria haneyi is an apicomplexan parasite closely related to Theileria equi, a known causative agent of equine piroplasmosis. The molecular distinction between these parasites relies on a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay, which has been reported to be unreliable. A recently reported indirect ELISA based on equi merozoite antigen 11 (Thema-11) of T. haneyi can detect geographically diverse T. haneyi strains. Since the ema-11 gene is exclusive to T. haneyi, it was chosen as the target for developing a TaqMan minor groove binder (MGB™) quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Published T

Molecular detection and population genetic diversity analysis of Theileria ovis in partial regions of Xinjiang, China.

Ovine theileriosis is a disease caused by the genus Theileria (e.g., T. ovis, T. lestoquardi), preventing the sheep farming industry from developing, particularly in regions reliant on sheep for milk, meat, and associated economic benefits. However, there is limited information available on the epidemiological data and genetic diversity of T. ovis in Xinjiang. This study was conducted in May 2024 to investigate the molecular prevalence of T. ovis in sheep from five counties (Shaya, Wensu, Aketao, Keping, Awati) in Xinjiang. A total of 357 blood samples were screened for the presence of Theiler

Identification of genetic variations linked to buparvaquone resistance in Theileria annulata infecting dairy cattle in India.

Buparvaquone (BPQ) is used for the treatment of bovine theileriosis, a tickborne disease caused by parasites of the Theileria genus. Studies on T. annulata have linked the mechanism of BPQ resistance predominantly to genetic variations in the parasite cytochrome b (cytb) gene. In addition, cryptic mechanisms of resistance involving the parasite peptidyl-prolyl isomerase (pin1) and dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (dhodh) genes require assessment. In India, where bovine theileriosis is endemic, and BPQ is widely used for treatment, it is necessary to establish the prevalence of genetic variations l

Epidemiology and factors associated with the infection of Babesia bigemina, Babesia bovis, and Theileria orientalis in Thale Noi Wetland buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis), Southern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) play a critical role in maintaining biodiversity and supporting the local economy within the unique ecosystem of the Thale Noi Wetlands in Southern Thailand, a globally recognized heritage site. However, these buffaloes are commonly infected by hemoprotozoan parasites, which can lead to severe pathological conditions. This study aims to investigate the epidemiology of hemoprotozoan infections, assess the occurrence of co-infections among these pathogens, and identify the risk factors associated with infections in water buffalo. A total of 155 water

Epidrugs: alternative chemotherapy targeting Theileria annulata schizont stage parasites.

The growing emergence of resistance to current anti-theilerial agents necessitates the exploration of alternative approaches to drug discovery. This study evaluated the antiparasitic efficacy of 148 compounds derived from an epigenetic inhibitor library against the schizont stage of a Theileria annulata-infected cell line. Initial screening at a concentration of 10 µM identified 27 compounds exhibiting promising anti-theilerial activity. Further investigation, including determination of the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) and host cell cytotoxicity assay, highlighted seven highly effective

Occurrence and genotyping of Theileria equi in dogs and associated ticks in Egypt.

Theileriosis is a tick-borne protozoal disease caused by a piroplasm of the genus Theileria. Hard ticks are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites that serve as vectors of Theileria spp. Studies of the presence of theileriosis in Egyptian dogs and associated ticks are scarce. This study was conducted to detect and identify Theileria spp. in dogs and Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks and to monitor the epidemiological data of this disease. The prevalence rates of Theileria equi infection were 12.02%, 0.73%, 2.93%, and 1.83% by microscopic examination of dog blood, tick hemolymph, tick midgut, and ti

Theileria equi in the horses of Iran: Molecular detection, genetic diversity, and hematological findings.

In all equids worldwide, Theileria equi and Babesia caballi are believed to be two important erythrocytic protozoa that cause equine piroplasmosis. In addition, it was recently discovered that Theileria haneyi is another potential equine piroplasmosis (EP) agent. Ixodid ticks are the major vectors of these parasites. Equine piroplasmosis is of international importance and affects enormously the equine industry. In this study, for the first time, molecular prevalence and genetic diversity of piroplasma parasites (T. equi and B. caballi) in horses from Fars province (south of Iran) were determin
