Manual therapy treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common orthopedic condition with a prevalence of 2%-3% in children aged 10-16 years. Conservative interventions remain controversial and are usually based on physical therapy exercises and treatments. Manual therapy techniques may also serve as adequate treatments for AIS due to their ability to improve range of motion and decrease muscle tone and pain. OBJECTIVE: To critically assess the current literature on the effectiveness of manual therapy methods used to treat AIS. METHODS: PubMed, PEDro, BioMed Central, and Google Scholar databas

[Negative pressure therapy in the loss of perineal substance].

Over the last ten years, negative pressure therapy has played a major role in the treatment of complex perineum wounds resulting from infection, trauma or cancer. The use of instillation has enabled its use to be extended to certain particularly difficult situations. It is also used routinely in support of dressing techniques for less complex wounds.

A case study utilizing myofascial release, acupressure and trigger point therapy to treat bilateral "Stringhalt" in a 12 year old Akhal-Teke horse.

"Stringhalt" is a horse condition that causes one or both hind legs to spasm when walking, trotting or backing. The condition is thought to be related to a neurological cause from either plant toxicity or peripheral nerve injury. The prognosis is poor and the horse's performance and quality of life can be affected. Treatment has included surgically cutting the digital extensors with varied results. The objective of the study is to utilize soft tissue release via acupressure, trigger point and myofascial release to decrease symptoms of stringhalt. The case study is a 12 year old Akhal-Teke hors

Neoadjuvant radiation influences the pseudocapsule in soft tissue sarcoma: A histopathologic and radiographic evaluation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A pseudocapsule surrounds soft tissue sarcoma (STS). Its composition, response to neoadjuvant radiation, and clinical significance are poorly understood. METHODS: Seventeen cases of high-grade undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) were reviewed, ten of which were treated with neoadjuvant radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, pathology slides, and patient records were reviewed. RESULTS: Irradiated pseudocapsules were well-demarcated with fewer viable tumor cells and were thicker on both pathology and MRI measurements when compared to non-irradiat

Skin and soft tissue infections.

Skin and soft tissue infections are a common cause of hospitalization and use of antibiotic therapy, and may result in significant disability. Infections managed by surgeons may vary from simple, noncomplicated cellulitis to severe necrotizing soft tissue infections. The differentiation of necrotizing infections from nonnecrotizing infections is critical to achieving adequate surgical therapy. An understanding of the changing epidemiology of all complicated skin and soft tissue infections is required for selection of appropriate empiric antibiotic therapy.

The significance of the width and thickness of the gingiva in orthodontic treatment.

The results of the studies reviewed have shown that, while the apico-coronal width of the gingiva is unlikely to affect the development of a recession defect, the thickness of the marginal soft tissue may be essential for the prevention of soft tissue recession in conjunction with orthodontic therapy. The clinical implication of these findings is that tooth movement--particularly tooth movement in facial/lingual direction--should be preceded by careful examination of the dimensions of the tissues covering the "pressure side" of the teeth to be moved. As long as the tooth can be moved within th

Cross-Leg Flaps for Lower Extremity Salvage: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity trauma with soft tissue loss presents a challenge to the reconstructive surgeon. Cross-leg flaps, first described by Hamilton in 1854, are still used to salvage traumatized lower extremities in patients not suitable for free tissue transfer, or those who are receiving care in locations with limited resources. METHODS: A scoping review methodology was used to examine the evidence supporting the use of cross-leg flaps in modern healthcare. RESULTS: There have been 409 cases of cross-leg flaps reported in the modern literature, with the majority of flap cases occurri

Paediatric mucormycosis: tailoring surgical strategies to compliment antifungal chemotherapy. Different strokes for different folks.

Children manifesting soft-tissue fungal infections are uncommonly seen, more so the subgroup of invasive soft-tissue mucormycosis. Invasive fungal infections in various organs respond differently and are often complicated by an immune-compromised host. Repeated and aggressive clearance of disease till an infection-clear margin is obtained is the mainstay of surgical therapy. This is coupled with appropriate antifungal therapy and the management of any underlying medical conditions. From our experience, we propose a surgical algorithm for therapy of soft-tissue mucormycosis in children.

"Soft-Tissue Response to Hard Tissue Changes Following Facial Feminization Surgery: A Three-Dimensional Region-Based Study".

BACKGROUND: Facial feminization surgery (FFS) involves bony modifications of the forehead, chin, and mandible. Accurately estimating the millimeter-level bony modification required to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome remains a challenge. Presented is the first analysis comparing bone anatomic changes to perceived soft tissue changes in FFS. METHODS: Computed tomography (CT) scans were obtained pre- and postoperatively, while three-dimensional (3D) photographs were acquired preoperatively and ≥6 months postoperatively (N = 70). Cephalometric and anthropometric landmarks were used to calcu

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy cytology of cutaneous calcinosis in a 74-year-old woman with dermatomyositis on methotrexate therapy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous calcinosis (CC) occurs in a variety of rheumatic diseases. Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) may be used in the office setting to evaluate such soft tissue lesions. For patients on methotrexate (MTX) therapy, methotrexate nodulosis (MN) should be considered in the differential diagnosis. CASE: A 74-year-old Caucasian woman with adult-onset dermatomyositis (ADM) on MTX therapy presented for evaluation of a right breast mass and multiple soft tissue nodules. FNABs of the right breast mass and a left upper extremity nodule both demonstrated benign calcified material. Six

Distinctive tooth-extraction socket healing: bisphosphonate versus parathyroid hormone therapy.

BACKGROUND: Patients with osteoporosis who receive tooth extractions are typically on either oral bisphosphonate or parathyroid hormone (PTH) therapy. Currently, the consequence of these therapies on hard- and soft-tissue healing in the oral cavity is not clearly defined. The aim of this study is to determine the differences in the therapeutic effect on tooth-extraction wound healing between bisphosphonate and PTH therapies. METHODS: Maxillary second molars were extracted in Sprague Dawley rats (n = 30), and either bisphosphonate (zoledronate [Zol]), PTH, or saline (vehicle control [VC]) was

Complications after proton radiotherapy in children, focusing on severe late complications. A complete Swedish cohort 2008-2019.

BACKGROUND: Proton radiotherapy (RT) is an attractive tool to deliver local therapy with minimal dose to uninvolved tissue, however, not suitable for all patients. The aim was to explore complications, especially severe late complications (grades 3-4), following proton RT delivered to a complete Swedish cohort of paediatric patients aged <18 years treated 2008-2019. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data was downloaded from a national registry. Complications with a possible causation with RT are reported. Proton treatments until July 2015 was performed with a fixed horizontal 172 MeV beam (The Svedberg L

Hyperthermia in the treatment of high-risk soft tissue sarcomas: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The therapy of high-risk soft tissue sarcomas (STS) remains an interdisciplinary challenge. Regional hyperthermia (RHT) sparked interest as it has been shown to improve overall survival when added to perioperative chemotherapy (CTX). However, questions arise on how RHT should be optimally integrated into current multi-modal therapies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a systematic literature review according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies written in English and focused mainly on radiative RHT and superficial hyp

Carbon dioxide laser vaporization of diaphragmatic metastases for cytoreduction of ovarian epithelial cancer.

Three patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics state IIIC ovarian adenocarcinoma underwent CO2 laser vaporization of large-volume (5-6 cm) and miliary right hemidiaphragmatic metastases at the conclusion of standard debulking surgery to effect optimal cytoreduction. Destruction of diaphragmatic metastases was accomplished rapidly with no added morbidity or blood loss. The hand-held CO2 laser is a useful modality for removal of isolated large- and small-volume diaphragmatic disease, particularly if only the peritoneum is involved, and avoids the morbidity that may acc

How I Treat Localized Soft Tissue Sarcomas: Update on Diagnosis, Risk Stratification, and Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Adult-type soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) are rare tumors representing about 1% of all adult malignant tumors. Their extreme histological heterogeneity places them among the most challenging fields of diagnostic pathology. The variability of clinical and prognostic presentation between the various histotypes reflects the different management that should be followed on a case-by-case basis. These features make STSs the case in point of how important it is a centralized and multidisciplinary approach. SUMMARY: Surgery represents the mainstay in the treatment of localized STSs. Recently
