Cardiac embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in a domestic shorthair cat.

Rhabdomyosarcomas (RBMs) are rare neoplasms arising from striated muscle tissues in domestic animals and are exceptionally uncommon, affecti … in the cat. Cardiac embryonal RBMs should be included in the differential diagnosis of cardiac and thoracic neoplasms in domestic cats presenting with clinical signs indicative of cardiac arrest or sudden death.

Molecular and immunophenotypic characterization of SMARCB1 (INI1) - deficient intrathoracic Neoplasms.

The switch/sucrose-non-fermenting (SWI/SNF) complex is an ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complex that plays important roles in DNA repair, transcription and cell differentiation. This complex consists of multiple subunits and is of particular interest in thoracic malignancies due to frequent subunit alteration of SMARCA4 (BRG1). Much less is known about SMARCB1 (INI1) deficient intrathoracic neoplasms, which are rare, often misclassified and understudied. In a retrospective analysis of 1479 intrathoracic malignant neoplasms using immunohistochemistry for INI1 (SMARCB1) on tissue micro arra…

A bilateral neoplasm in chest: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Myelolipoma is a rare neoplasm composed of yellowish adipose tissue and reddish-brown tissue corresponding to hematopoietic or hemorrhages. It typically occurs in adrenal glands as a solitary, well-circumscribed mass, and the thoracic location is extremely unusual. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare case who is a 54 years old male with bilateral Myelolipoma of the posterior mediastinum. He underwent the surgery via video-assisted thoracic surgery both sides interval 3 months. Histological examination showed both tumors consisted of mature fat tissue and hematopoietic tissue, inc

Giant esophageal gastrointestinal stromal tumor: report of a case.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) rarely arise in the esophagus, where carcinoma is the most common malignant neoplasm and leiomyoma is the most common benign tumor. Because of their rarity, the clinical course and treatment of esophageal GISTs are poorly understood. These lesions are generally thought to carry a poor prognosis, making the differential diagnosis of other common mesenchymal neoplasms essential, for both prognostic and therapeutic reasons. We report a case of successfully resected giant esophageal GIST, thought to be the largest resected GIST reported in Japan. The patient

Retrospective analysis for thirty-nine patients with solitary fibrous tumor of pleura and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is an uncommon neoplasm arising from mesenchymal cells. The aim of this study is to summarize the experience and the outcome of the surgical treatment for 39 cases of SFTP. METHODS: From January 2004 to December 2008, 39 patients underwent surgical resection of SFTP in our department. All patients had clinical follow-up by the same team of surgeons. The mean follow-up was 40.3 months. RESULTS: A local removal of the neoplasm was accomplished by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) in 9 patients (group A) and by thoracotomy in 30 patie

Solitary fibrous tumors in the head and neck: new insights and implications for diagnosis and treatment.

OBJECTIVES: The solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a potentially malignant spindle cell neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that was originally described as a thoracic lesion originating from pleural tissue. Recently, numerous extrapleural sites of origin have been described, frequently affecting the head and neck region. The purpose of this article is to focus on a formerly underestimated neoplasm and to highlight its appearance in the head and neck region. METHODS: The authors present 2 illustrative cases, including what is probably the first reported case of an SFT arising in the human tonsillar f

Synchronous lung adenocarcinoma in situ and type B2-B3 thymoma in a frozen hemithorax: a case report and multidisciplinary approach.

BACKGROUND: Synchronous primary lung cancer and mediastinal thymoma represent a rare clinical entity. While 18F-FDG PET/CT serves as a cornerstone modality for differentiating benign from malignant thoracic neoplasms, hypermetabolic activity secondary to severe localized inflammation can frequently masquerade as highly aggressive malignancies. Such radiologic-pathologic discordance significantly elevates the risk of misdiagnosis, thereby adding substantial complexity to clinical decision-making and patient management. CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old woman with prior tuberculosis and stented …

Thymic cavernous haemangioma in a dog.

A 12-year-old male neutered Australian Shepherd Dog was presented to Charlotte Animal Referral & Emergency with a history of a thoracic mass. On physical examination, physiological parameters were within the normal ranges, and a complete haemogram and serum biochemistry profile were unremarkable except for mild thrombocytopenia. A computed tomography scan revealed a 21 × 15 × 12.7 cm thoracic mass encompassing the cranial mediastinum and extending to the right caudal thorax. The mass was surgically removed and histopathological evaluation revealed that it comprised remnants of the thymus and a

Respiratory insufficiency in a newborn with mesenchymal hamartoma of the chest wall occupying the thoracic cavity.

The authors describe a newborn patient with mesenchymal hamartoma of the chest wall associated with pulmonary hypoplasia. A massive thoracic tumor was diagnosed by prenatal ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging at the 28th week of gestation. She was delivered through cesarean delivery at the 36th gestational week. Respiratory distress because of pulmonary hypoplasia necessitated neonatal intensive care. The tumor extensively involved the left hemithorax including all 12 ribs and the first 10 thoracic vertebrae, resulting in marked deformity of the thorax. At 5 days of age, she underwe

[Actinomycosis--a multidisciplinary approach to a clinical problem].

Actinomycosis is caused by microorganisms of the Actinomyces species, found in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal and genital tract. Infection by Actimomyces species mainly causes chronic supurative disease of the oral, cervico-facial, thoracic, and abdominal regions. Clinical manifestations have been described at every level, but the disease is relatively rarely diagnosed. The causative agent is considered to be an opportunistic pathogen associated with infection, trauma, surgical procedures, or associated with a neoplasm or foreign body. Symptoms include intermittent fever, weight loss, abdom

Primary idiopathic chylopericardium--a case report and review of the literature.

Primary idiopathic chylopericardium is a rare entity with obscure etiology. In recent years, a few reports have been published where the lymphatic leak and fistula were identified by combined lymphangiography and computed tomography or intraoperative thoracic ductogram. Here we report a case occurring in a previously healthy 51 year old woman, to our knowledge the first case described in Scandinavia. She presented with cough and dyspnea of about 1 year duration. Chest X-ray demonstrated enlargement of the cardiac silhouette. Echocardiography revealed pericardial effusion and at puncture perica

Chronic eosinophilic pneumonia associated with neurofibromatosis type 1: an unusual complication.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (formerly known as von Recklinghausen's disease) is an autosomal dominant disorder, which results from the proliferation of the neural crest cells, thus affecting any organ system. Several pulmonary manifestations have hitherto been reported, including chest wall deformities, diffuse lung disease, thoracic neoplasms, pulmonary arterial hypertension, central hypoventilation, diaphragmatic paralysis and meningocele. However, eosinophilic lung disorders have not been described. An unusual case of chronic eosinophilic pneumonia in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1, i…

Diabetic truncal mononeuropathy--a new clinical syndrome.

Although diabetic mononeuropathy affecting the cranial and peripheral nerves is well recognized, there is little known or documented about diabetic mononeuropathy affecting the thoracic nerves, i.e., the truncal nerves. This series of 40 cases attests to its frequency; equal sex distribution; significance in differential diagnosis including coronary artery disease, intra-abdominal surgical diseases such as gallbladder pathology and appendicitis, pleurisy, and neoplasms. Truncal mononeuropathy has characteristics that differ from those of other diabetic mononeuropathies in that it is primarily

Robot-assisted surgery for combined mini-invasive hemivertebrectomy with thoracotomy for en bloc resection of a paravertebral primary thoraco-lumbar tumor: technical note.

Primary bone tumors are quite rare spine neoplasms. When they are isolated, to prevent neurological impairment and recurrence, the best treatment is en-bloc negative margins resection. These procedures are often challenging, and technical improvements such as robotics can help surgeons to achieve their goals. We report here the case of a young adult who presented with an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT), arising from the rib cage, and involving T12 vertebral body. An en-bloc resection, involving the mass and a right hemi-vertebrectomy was decided in a tumor board. A two- step surgery w

Minimally invasive lateral retroperitoneal corpectomy for treatment of focal thoracolumbar kyphotic deformity: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Corpectomy is a frequently performed procedure for pathologies of the anterior spine including neoplasms, fractures, deformities, and osteomyelitis. Traditional approaches to the anterior thoracic spine and thoracolumbar junction are associated with significant perioperative pulmonary complications and morbidity. Posterior and posterolateral approaches minimize some of these complications but are somewhat limited in visualization of the anterior elements. PATIENT AND METHODS: Here we report the case of a 49-year-old man with a remote thoracolumbar fracture and subsequent focal def

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor with stenosis of the main pancreatic duct leading to pancreatic pleural effusion: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic pleural effusion and ascites are defined as fluid accumulation in the thoracic and abdominal cavity, respectively, due to direct leakage of the pancreatic juice. They usually occur in patients with acute or chronic pancreatitis but are rarely associated with pancreatic neoplasm. We present here an extremely rare case of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor with stenosis of the main pancreatic duct, leading to pancreatic pleural effusion. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old man complained of dyspnea. Left-sided pleural effusion was detected on the chest X-ray. Pleural puncture w

Transvaginal partial excision of a circumferential urethral leiomyoma: Surgical technique and outcome.

We present a rare case of a 68-year-old female with urinary retention and a peri-urethral mass. The patient, with a history of thoracic aortic aneurysm, was referred to urology after a urethral mass was incidentally detected on CT imaging during aneurysm surveillance. Pelvic MRI identified a 4.8 cm circumferential, enhancing mass along the proximal urethra. A transvaginal ultrasound-guided biopsy confirmed a low-grade smooth muscle neoplasm, consistent with leiomyoma. The mass was successfully excised via a transvaginal approach. This case highlights the importance of a broad differential in f
