Acquired ichthyosis is a rare cutaneous disorder characterized by dry, rough skin with prominent scaling, that involves symmetrically the trunk and limbs and especially on the extensor surfaces. It appears most commonly in adults in association with malignant, autoimmune, metabolic, endocrine, and infectious diseases. We describe a child with acquired ichthyosis in whom an autoimmune hypothyroidism was detected; furthermore, replacement therapy with L-thyroxine resulted in complete remission of ichthyosis.

In this report we describe a 47-yr-old woman who was referred to our department for elevated serum TSH associated with normal free thyroid hormone levels, suggesting subclinical hypothyroidism. When first seen she was clinically euthyroid, and her thyroid gland was normal in size both at palpation and by ultrasound. The ultrasound of the thyroid showed a normoechogenic pattern. Serum thyroid hormone levels were confirmed to be within the normal range, whereas the serum TSH concentration was moderately elevated (13.4 microU/ml). Tests for antithyroperoxidase, antithyroglobulin, and anti-TSH rec

Forty-seven pediatric patients with autoimmune thyroiditis were followed for an average of 5.18+/-2.89 years. The diagnosis was based on a firm goiter and a positive test for antithyroid antibodies. Initially, 23 patients had euthyroidism, 11 overt hypothyroidism, 6 compensated hypothyroidism and 7 with low TSH. All patients had clinical euthyroidism, except two who had overt hypothyroidism. The thyroid function tests, the size of the thyroid gland and the thyroid antibodies were regularly evaluated. After the follow-up, 26 patients had untreated euthyroidism, 12 with overt hypothyroidism rece

Cytokines are thought to mediate the initiation and perpetuation of autoimmune thyroiditis. However, this concept is mainly based on in vitro findings and to date only interleukin (IL)-6 and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) have been detected in Graves' disease in vivo. The cytokine pattern produced by T-helper (Th) cells has important regulatory effects on the nature of the immune response. We therefore determined these cytokine mRNAs in Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. RNA was extracted by cesium chloride gradient centrifugation from the thyroid tissue of 12 patients undergoing thyro

As many as 174 children (152 with autoimmune thyroiditis, 12 with thyroid diseases of non-autoimmune genesis and 10 with diffuse toxic goiter) underwent clinical and laboratory examinations with a purpose of delineating the clinical course and comparative assessments of the methods applied in the diagnosis of autoimmune thyroiditis. High risk for the disease in the pre- and pubertal age, the lack of a specific appearance, gradual disease development, uneventful course in many cases with a progressive development of hypothyrosis, and rare development of the grave patterns of hypothyrosis have b

Studies concerning adult female patients with Turner's syndrome demonstrated that the impairment of the thyroid function is more often found in these patients than in the general female population. This is primarily related to a greater frequency of autoimmune thyroid diseases. Thyroid function was studied in a group of 23 female patients with Turner's syndrome, aged 7 to 24 years. Mean age was 15.6 years. Twelve patients had the karyotype 45X, three had mosaics 45X/46XX, one had the karyotype 45X/47XXX, while 7 had different structural X chromosome anomalies. They were all clinically euthyroi

Autoimmune thyroiditis in infancy is a very rare condition. Only 1 case has been reported previously. In the present patient an acquired primary hypothyroidism with high titers of thyroid microsomal antibodies was diagnosed at the age of 7 months. The patient died at 9 months of age in a sepsis-like condition. Autopsy revealed an atrophic thyroiditis. The more severe and complex clinical picture of autoimmune thyroiditis in infancy compared to that later in childhood is discussed.

Autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's disease) is one of a myriad of clinical entities associated with the endocrine system. The disease is thought to be a defect in the immune regulatory system. The following report is a study of 112 cases of Hashimoto's thyroiditis treated over a 10-year period. The incidence of malignancy associated with autoimmune thyroiditis in this study was 6.3%, which correlates well with the incidence of thyroid cancer seen in the general population at autopsy. We have concluded from this study that patients with autoimmune thyroid endocrinopathy are at no greater risk

Mice of strains high and low responders to thyroglobulin were immunized with mouse thyroglobulin emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant. Groups of mice were killed at weekly intervals and the serum thyroxine concentration was measured with a solid-phase RIA while the titre of thyroglobulin antibodies was determined by passive haemagglutination and the magnitude of thyroid infiltration with mononuclear cells was scored. In other groups of mice, similarly immunized, radioactive iodine uptake was measured at various times after immunization. In almost all mice the lowest level of thyroxine and
