The occurrence of thyrotrophin-binding inhibiting immunoglobulins (TBII) was determined by the radioligand receptor method in 8 patients with subacute thyroiditis (ST). In the acute phase 2 out of the 6 cases investigated at this stage were TBII positive and one had a borderline TBII value. All three cases were TBII negative when re-investigated more than 3 months later. In the acute phase the serum thyroglobulin (TG) level was 63.8 +/- 61.9 micrograms/l (mean +/- SD, ref. limit less than 26 micrograms/l) and in the later phase 18.2 +/- 9.3 micrograms/l, the TG level being somewhat higher in t

Using a radioreceptor assay and serum immunoglobulin (Ig) prepared by ammonium sulfate precipitation, significant TSH displacement activity (TDA) was demonstrated in 5 of 15 patients with subacute thyroiditis tested during the acute phase. Using a cAMP generation assay, adenyl cyclase stimulation by Ig from patients with subacute thyroiditis was not demonstrated. The nature of the TDA demonstrated in subacute thyroiditis was investigated to determine whether the factor measured was TSH receptor antibody, as is found in Graves' hyperthyroidism, or thyroglobulin, which is know to give false posi

A radioreceptor assay was used to measure thyroid stimulating antibodies (TSAb) during the acute and recovery phases in 7 patients with subacute thyroiditis. High levels of TSAb were detected in 4 patients during the acute phase. In two other patients, tests were borderline positive. In the latter two patients tests were negative by two weeks, whilst in the 4 patients with strongly positive tests initially, levels persisted for several weeks, falling to within the normal range by 3 months in the two patients in whom repeated tests were carried out. TSAb probably do not play a role in the trans

Subacute thyroiditis is an inflammatory condition of the thyroid gland in which pain may be referred to the jaws. The clinical features of the condition are outlined and emphasized through an illustrative case report. Clinicians should include this disease in the differential diagnosis of facial pain. It is important that, in an area so fraught with emotional overlay, a precise and careful history be taken from all patients and that these data be married to a concise classification of potential causes.

During 1974 and 1975 thirty patients with subacute thyroiditis referred to us were treated with diftalone (Aladione), a new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, at a daily oral dose of 750 mg. The average treatment lasted 39 days (range 15-100), the mean age of the patients was 43-5 years (range: 22-70). The response to this therapy was prompt and excellent, in no patient was it necessary to switch to any other kind of treatment, such as the corticosteroids. The drug was tolerated very well although among our patients there were two diabetics on insulin and two patients with chronic duodenal
