Environmental effects on the behavior of zoo-housed lions and tigers, with a case study of the effects of a visual barrier on pacing.

Tigers and lions in the wild are nocturnal nonhuman animals who may hunt and mate opportunistically during daylight hours. In captivity, they spend most time on exhibit sleeping or pacing. To better understand their activity budget, this study examined the daily behavior patterns of 2 Sumatran tigers and 3 African lions in different housings. The proportion of scans the large felids spent engaged in stereotypic pacing varied by time of day and environment. The tigers spent different amounts of time pacing when housed in different exhibits; the lions paced more in off-exhibit housing than when …

Timing of ovulation after gonadotrophin induction and its importance to successful intrauterine insemination in the tiger (Panthera tigris).

The ovarian response to equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) and human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), the effect of timing of ovulation relative to hCG injection and the use of laparoscopic intrauterine artificial insemination (AI) were examined in two subspecies of tiger (Panthera tigris). Adult female tigers were subjected to the same eCG/hCG treatment followed by laparoscopy under xylazine/diazapam/ketamine HCl anaesthesia at 39-42 h (Group I, n = 9), 46-49 h (Group II, n = 5) or 51-55 h (Group III, n = 5) after hCG. Six of these females, observed to be postovulatory at the time of laparosc…

Identification of glutamate receptor subtypes mediating inputs to bipolar cells and ganglion cells in the tiger salamander retina.

1. The effects of glutamate receptor agonists and antagonists on bipolar cells and ganglion cells were studied with the use of intracellular and extracellular recording in the superfused, isolated, flat-mounted tiger salamander retina. The goal of the experiments was to correlate glutamate receptor subtypes with their localization at specific synaptic sites in the tiger salamander retina. The drugs tested were the kainate/alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor antagonist 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (CNQX), the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor anta

A novel biomarker of human exposure to Aedes albopictus based on the Ag5-3 salivary protein from the tiger mosquito.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne arboviral diseases represent a growing threat and serious worldwide concern for public health authorities. Host immunoglobulin G (IgG) responses to mosquito salivary antigens emerged as a useful additional tool to evaluate human-vector contact, which is crucial for transmission risk assessment and planning vector control interventions. We previously reported that IgG responses to the Aedes albopictus 34k2 salivary protein (al34k2) are suitable, although with some limitations, to reveal variation of human exposure to the tiger mosquito. In this study we evaluated the

Clinical presentation, diagnostic investigations and follow-up of a Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) affected by ambulatory tetraparesis.

An 11-year-old male Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) was referred for a 2-week history of ambulatory tetraparesis, generalized ataxia, and hypermetric gait, associated with mild right head tilt and spontaneous proprioceptive deficit on the right forelimb. Neuroanatomical localization was C1-C5 myelopathy; cerebellum-vestibular system involvement was also considered. Hematology and serum biochemistry were unremarkable, although serum vitamin A (0.11 mg/L) was below the reference range (0.17 - 0.36 mg/L). Indirect hemagglutination test for Toxoplasma gondii was positive (antibodies titer 1:

Influence of nutrition during previtellogenesis on the follicular development in the Asian Tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae).

Dengue fever poses a global public health threat, with 2.5 billion people at risk of infection each year. Because the Aedes albopictus is the primary vector of dengue, it is closely monitored and handled. The efficiency of Dengue eradication is strongly dependent on understanding a female mosquito's physiological age. This study addresses key entomological issues about the impact of previtellogenic nutrition on egg production mechanisms. Ovarian development included two distinct periods: previtellogenesis and vitellogenesis. Sugar intake during previtellogenesis influences the size of the bloo

Cerebral cysticercosis in a wild Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) in Bhutan: A first report in non-domestic felids.

The endangered Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is a keystone species playing an essential role in ecology as well as in the social and spiritual lives of the Himalayan people. The latest estimate of the Bengal tiger population in Bhutan accounts for 103 individuals. Infectious organisms, including zoonotic parasites causing high burden in human health, have received little attention as a cause of mortality in tigers. Taeniosis/cysticercosis, caused by the cestode Taenia solium, is considered one of the major neglected tropical diseases in Southeast Asia. We present here a case of neurocy…

High Fibre Gluten-Free Fresh Pasta with Tiger Nut, Chickpea and Fenugreek: Technofunctional, Sensory and Nutritional Properties.

Gluten-free pasta production with a low glycaemic index and improved nutritional profile is still a challenge for the food industry. In this study, pasta was produced from fenugreek (FF), chickpea (CPF) and tiger nut (TNF) flours. CPF and FF are interesting for a balanced contribution of soluble and insoluble fibre by combining the health benefits of each type of fibre that promotes health. TNF, also rich in insoluble fibre, can provide additional healthy properties. The partial substitution of TNF for FF (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10% w/w solids) was assessed, and the relation linking chemical compo

Chemical modification of notexin from Notechis scutatus scutatus (Australian tiger snake) venom with pyridoxal-5'-phosphate.

Notexin from Notechis scutatus scutatus snake venom was subjected to Lys modification with pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), and one major modified derivative was purified on a cation-exchanger SP-8HR column. The results of amino acid analysis and sequence determination revealed that only 2 Lys residues at positions 82 and 115 out of 11 Lys residues in notexin were modified. The incorporation of PLP into the protein was accompanied by the loss of 53% lethal toxicity, but the modified notexin showed an about 1.2-fold increase in enzymatic activity. However, the secondary structure of the toxin mole

A novel GABA receptor modulates synaptic transmission from bipolar to ganglion and amacrine cells in the tiger salamander retina.

We investigated the mechanisms underlying the modulation of transmitter release from bipolar cells. Three currents, measured under whole-cell patch clamp in the tiger salamander retinal slice, were used to identify the sites of modulation and to establish their pharmacological profile. (1) A light-elicited inhibitory current was measured in bipolar cells that could be blocked by picrotoxin. This input probably arrives via GABAergic amacrine cells since there is high GABA sensitivity at the bipolar cell terminals and little GABA sensitivity at the dendrites. (2) Voltage-gated barium currents we

[Effect of presynaptic neurotoxin notechis II-5 from tiger snake venom on the motor nerve endings of mice].

The neurotoxin notechis II-5 (N-II-5) from tiger snake venom (Notechis scutatus) induces three-phasic changes in miniature end-plate potential (MEPP) frequency recorded in the mouse diaphragm muscle: an initial fall of frequency followed by increase and decrease in MEPP frequency up to complete blockade. The effect of N-II-5 was enhanced with rising of the solution temperature from 20 to 30 and 35 degrees C. Removal of Ca2+ from the solution prevented the presynaptic effect of N-II-5. After washing out of the muscle from N-II-5 with Ca-free solution, addition of Ca2+ to the solution provoked t

Tiger nut oil unsaponifiables ameliorate high-fat diet-induced metabolic dysfunction and cognitive impairment in mice.

Tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus L.), a highly promising oil crop, produces oil rich in unsaturated fatty acids and contains various natural bioactive components. However, the role of these accompanying lipid constituents in the health effects of tiger nut oil has been insufficiently investigated. In this study, tiger nut oil unsaponifiables (TNU) were prepared via saponification followed by solvent extraction, and their chemical composition was identified by GC-MS. The effects of TNU on metabolic dysregulation and cognitive impairment were assessed in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mouse mo
