Phase angle is related to physical function and quality of life in preoperative patients with lumbar spinal stenosis.

Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) can interfere with daily life and quality of life (QOL). Evaluating physical function and QOL and helping patients to improve is the focus of rehabilitation. Phase angle (PhA) assessment is widely used to measure body composition and is considered an indicator of physical function and QOL. This study investigated the relationship between PhA and physical function, physical activity, and QOL in patients with LSS. PhA, handgrip strength, walking speed, Timed Up and Go test (TUG), Life Space Assessment (LSA), Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), Japanese Orthopaedic As

Validation and reproducibility of the Glittre activities of the daily living test for evaluation of functional capacity after a stroke.

METHODS: Thirty patients with hemiparesis stemming from a stroke and 20 healthy peers were evaluated. Reproducibility was determined using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard measurement error (SME), minimum detectable change (MDC), and Bland-Altman analysis. For construct validity, the Glittre ADL test was correlated with the Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), and Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and analyzed based on convergent validity and the comparison of known groups (stroke survivors and healthy peers). RESULTS: Intra- and inter-observer r

Combining vestibular rehabilitation with noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation for treatment of bilateral vestibulopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) has been shown to partly restore vestibular function and to stabilize stance and gait in patients with incomplete bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP). Here, we examined potential synergistic effects of nGVS when combined with standardized vestibular rehabilitation training (VRT). METHODS: 23 patients with confirmed BVP received a 30-min vestibular rehabilitation training (VRT) program three times a week for 2 weeks. The intervention group (n = 12) was stimulated with nGVS (at individually determined optimal amplitudes) during training, wherea

Time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopic studies on the triplet excited state of thioxanthone.

Thioxanthone has been investigated extensively owing to its unique photochemical and photophysical applications and its solvatochromic behavior. Here, we report the time-resolved resonance Raman studies on the structure of the lowest triplet excited state of thioxanthone in carbon tetrachloride. In addition, FT-IR and FT-Raman techniques have been used to study the vibrational structure in the ground state. To corroborate the experimental findings, density functional theory calculations have been carried out. Isotopic calculations and normal coordinate analysis have been used to help in assign

Cross-sectional and longitudinal study of the relationship between phase angle and physical function in older adults.

AIM: Although the validity of the assessment in older adults has been supported by several studies, cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between phase angle (PhA) and physical function by sex have not been clarified. This study aimed to examine (i) cross-sectional relationships and (ii) longitudinal relationships between PhA and physical function in older adults. METHODS: A total of 816 and 445 community-dwelling older adults were included in cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses, respectively. We evaluated their physical function using grip strength, 5-repetition sit-to-stand t

Does piriformis muscle syndrome impair postural balance? A case control study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: While patients with musculoskeletal disorders reported postural balance impairments, it is unknown whether patients with piriformis muscle syndrome (PMS) may exhibit postural balance disorders compared to controls. The aim was to compare postural balance in patients with PMS to controls in static and dynamic conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve patients with PMS and twelve controls were enrolled. Static postural balance was assessed by calculating the symmetry index (SI) in the unipedal posture. To measure vision contribution, the Romberg index (RI) was computed. D

Perception of global gestalt by temporal integration in simultanagnosia.

Patients with bilateral parieto-occipital brain damage may show intact processing of individual objects, while their perception of multiple objects is disturbed at the same time. The deficit is termed 'simultanagnosia' and has been discussed in the context of restricted visual working memory and impaired visuo-spatial attention. Recent observations indicated that the recognition of global shapes can be modulated by the spatial distance between individual objects in patients with simultanagnosia and thus is not an all-or-nothing phenomenon depending on spatial continuity. However, grouping mech

Targeted muscle reinnervation for real-time myoelectric control of multifunction artificial arms.

CONTEXT: Improving the function of prosthetic arms remains a challenge, because access to the neural-control information for the arm is lost during amputation. A surgical technique called targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) transfers residual arm nerves to alternative muscle sites. After reinnervation, these target muscles produce electromyogram (EMG) signals on the surface of the skin that can be measured and used to control prosthetic arms. OBJECTIVE: To assess the performance of patients with upper-limb amputation who had undergone TMR surgery, using a pattern-recognition algorithm to deco

Transdermal scopolamine, oral meclizine, and placebo in motion sickness.

The efficacy of transdermal scopolamine, oral meclizine, and placebo in protection against motion sickness was compared in a double-blind crossover study. Thirty-six healthy subjects were exposed to motion three times for 90 min in a ship-motion simulator. Transdermal applications were made and tablets were taken at least 12 and 2 hr before exposure to motion. Transdermal scopolamine provided better protection than placebo or meclizine. Dryness of mouth was the only side effect reported more frequently for one regimen, transdermal scopolamine.

Recovery of elbow motion following pediatric lateral condylar fractures of the humerus.

BACKGROUND: Temporary elbow stiffness is often seen after a lateral condylar fracture of the distal end of the humerus in children. There are scant scientific data available to assess the expected time frame for return of elbow motion after these injuries. The purpose of this study is to provide a prospective, longitudinal evaluation of elbow motion in a large group of pediatric patients undergoing treatment for a lateral condylar fracture of the distal end of the humerus. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated 141 patients with lateral humeral condylar fractures at a mean age of 5.2 years and w

Attentional demands in the visual field modulate audiovisual interactions in the temporal domain.

Attention and crossmodal interactions are closely linked through a complex interplay at different stages of sensory processing. Within the context of motion perception, previous research revealed that attentional demands alter audiovisual interactions in the temporal domain. In the present study, we aimed to understand the neurophysiological correlates of these attentional modulations. We utilized an audiovisual motion paradigm that elicits auditory time interval effects on perceived visual speed. The audiovisual interactions in the temporal domain were quantified by changes in perceived visua

The point of no return in planar hand movements: an indication of the existence of high level motion primitives.

Previous psychophysical studies have sought to determine whether the processes of movement engagement and termination are dissociable, whether stopping an action is a generic process, and whether there is a point in time in which the generation of a planned action is inevitable ("point of no return"). It is not clear yet, however, whether the action of stopping is merely a manifestation of low level, dynamic constraints, or whether it is also subject to a high level, kinematic plan. In the present study, stopping performance was studied while nine subjects, who generated free scribbling moveme

Sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics applied to the acoustic levitation of acoustically large objects.

Many studies on acoustic radiation forces, especially those applied to acoustic levitation, focus on characterizing the behaviour of acoustic fields. However, the dynamic response of the levitated objects, particularly those larger than the wavelength limit, remains relatively underexplored. Here, we look to bridge this gap by deriving nonlinear equations of motion for a spherical object trapped under acoustic radiation forces while subject to external excitation. For such a contemporary scenario, the otherwise elemental Gorkov formulation fails to provide accurate results. Using Sparse Identi

Intervertebral kinematics during neck motion 6.5 years after fusion and artificial disc replacement.

BACKGROUND: Arthroplasty with artificial disc replacement for surgical treatment of cervical spine degeneration was introduced with the notion that motion-preserving approaches would prevent development of adjacent segment disease. Though clinical outcomes favor arthroplasty over the commonly used anterior cervical discectomy with fusion approach, clinical studies confirming the biomechanical basis of these results are lacking. The aim of this study was to compare intervertebral kinematics between arthroplasty and fusion patients 6.5 years post-surgery during physiological motion of the neck.

Real-time Classification of Diverse Reaching Motions Using RMS and Discrete Wavelet Transform Energy Values from EMG Signals for Human Assistive Robots.

With advancing technology, human assistive robots have been developed to enhance daily efficiency for users. Focusing on the reaching motions of the upper limb, this study aims to propose a motion classification method based on electromyographic (EMG) signals that can accurately and promptly differentiate among three distinct types of reaching motion-regular reaching, extended reaching, and weighted reaching-regardless of the motion direction. In the proposed method, the EMG signals of upper limb and torso muscles relevant to these reaching motions are used to identify pivotal features capable

Manufactured Brace Modalities for Elbow Stiffness.

Multiple surgical and nonsurgical treatment options exist for patients with elbow stiffness. Many nonsurgical mobilization bracing options have been implemented to increase elbow range of motion. Three of the main bracing options for these patients are turnbuckle, static progressive stretch, and dynamic bracing. The purpose of this study was to review the current literature on turnbuckle, static progressive stretch, and dynamic bracing to provide information for practitioners and patients regarding which brace is more appropriate to use for elbow stiffness. Specifically, the authors compared t
