Scaling scalp diseases in children.

Scaling scalp diseases in 142 children were evaluated. Included were seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, tinea capitis, and psoriasis. Clinical signs were noted, and various treatments were then undertaken. Patients with seborrheic dermatitis responded well to treatment with antiseborrheic shampoo and topical corticosteroids. Atopic disease was more resistant to treatment, but did improve with less frequent shampooing and twice daily topical corticosteroid application. Selenium shampoo was a useful adjunct in the treatment of tinea capitis (cultures became negative at two weeks compared …

Incidence of dermatophytes in the San Francisco Bay area.

A total of 1,101 patients was studied for the incidence and distribution of dermatophytes in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1974 to 1978. 267 dermatophytes were isolated and identified. Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton tonsurans were the most prevalent dermatophytes. T. rubrum caused 83% of tinea pedis, 82% of tinea unguium, 80% of tinea manuum and 66% of tinea cruris. T. tonsurans was the major cause of tinea capitis (60%) followed by Microsporum canis. Microsporum audouinii was not encountered in this survey.

Hair shafts in trichoscopy: clues for diagnosis of hair and scalp diseases.

Trichoscopy (hair and scalp dermoscopy) analyzes the structure and size of growing hair shafts, providing diagnostic clues for inherited and acquired causes of hair loss. Types of hair shaft abnormalities observed include exclamation mark hairs (alopecia areata, trichotillomania, chemotherapy-induced alopecia), Pohl-Pinkus constrictions (alopecia areata, chemotherapy-induced alopecia, blood loss, malnutrition), comma hairs (tinea capitis), corkscrew hairs (tinea capitis), coiled hairs (trichotillomania), flame hairs (trichotillomania), and tulip hairs (in trichotillomania, alopecia areata). Spectrum and burden of dermatophytes in children.

Tinea capitis is the most important superficial fungal condition in children. It is often unrecognised but the presence of alopecia, scale and lymphadenopathy, especially in inner-city children should prompt investigation. An understanding of changing epidemiology and prevalence of causative organisms is important in deciding appropriate therapy. The use of diagnostic aids including dermoscopy is increasing and is reported to be helpful in identifying subtle signs. Trichophyton tonsurans accounts for the majority of cases in the UK and terbinafine is increasingly advocated as a safe and effect…

Superficial fungal infections in children and adolescents.

Children with superficial fungal infections are commonly seen in clinical practice. Although tinea capitis and tinea corporis are the most common childhood mycoses, thrush and candida diaper dermatitis also occur frequently in infants. At times, diagnosis can be a challenge, but is made easier with the use of the potassium hydroxide microscopy and fungal cultures. Most childhood superficial fungal infections are adequately treated with topical antifungal medication. These medications are effective and the majority are safe for use in children. Oral antifungal drugs are required for children wi…

Recent developments in antifungal therapy.

There have been many advances during the past few years relating to the treatment of superficial fungal infections. This article focuses on recent developments, particularly in oral therapy, but in topical therapy as well. First, the newer agents (especially fluconazole, itraconazole, and terbinafine) are reviewed, and then the use of these agents in many disorders is discussed, with emphasis on tinea corporis or cruris, tinea pedis, tinea capitis, and onychomycosis.

Fungal infections and parasitic infestations in sports: expedient identification and treatment.

Common fungal infections include tinea corporis, capitis, cruris, versicolor, and pedis, as well as onychomycosis. Prevention of spread is important and involves frequent skin surveillance, avoidance of shared equipment, and regular equipment cleaning. The NCAA recommends treatment of tinea corporis and capitis infections and covering any exposed infection before return to play. Parasitic infestations occur because of the close physical contact of team members and athletes in contact sports. Both scabies and pediculosis should be treated before return to play, according to NCAA guidelines. Cut

Intracranial meningiomas related to external cranial irradiation.

Three cases are presented of meningiomas following small-dose external cranial irradiation in which several features clearly indicate a causal relationship between radiotherapy and tumour development. In two of them, multiple meningiomas followed X-ray treatment for Tinea capitis. The length of the latent period separates meningiomas following high-dose irradiation, usually administered for intracranial tumours, from those which followed small-dose irradiation. Therefore the oncogenic mechanism seems to act differently in the two groups. This demonstration that multiple meningiomas can occur i…

Tinea corporis due to Trichophyton violaceum: A report of two cases.

Dermatophytes are Fungi which infect keratinized tissues, that is, skin epidermis, hair and nails. Trichophyton violaceum is an anthropophilic, cosmopolitan dermatophyte. It primarily causes tinea capitis and less commonly tinea corporis and tinea unguium. We present a report of two cases of tinea corporis due to T. violaceum in children. Infections due to T. violaceum are important because of its transmissibility within families and community and its potential to spread and establish in new geographical areas.

Pathophysiology of dermatophyte infections.

Dermatophyte infections are among the most common infections encountered in medicine. Often considered trivial, these infections are in fact frequently refractory and recurrent. This article presents an overview of the causes, symptoms, differential diagnosis, and clinical course of the most prevalent dermatophyte infections: tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea capitis, tinea corporis, and onychomycosis. Complicated situations such as follicular involvement, dermatophytoses in patients who are immunocompromised, and the exaggerated response to zoologically acquired fungal infections are also disc…
