Stealth vaping and associated attitudes, perceptions, and control beliefs among US college students across four tobacco-free campuses.

OBJECTIVES: Stealth vaping gained popularity among college students in recent years. It may undermine the benefits introduced by tobacco-free policies. Yet, no studies have investigated attitude and belief factors associated with stealth vaping. The objective of the study was to explore the relationship between attitudes toward on-campus tobacco regulations, normative perceptions of stealth vaping behaviors, and control beliefs with on-campus stealth vaping among U.S. college students. METHODS: Participants from four large, public universities with policies prohibiting use of all forms of tob

Effect of prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke on inhibitory control: neuroimaging results from a 25-year prospective study.

IMPORTANCE: There is accumulating evidence relating maternal smoking during pregnancy to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) without elucidating specific mechanisms. Research investigating the neurobiological underpinnings of this disorder has implicated deficits during response inhibition. Attempts to uncover the effect of prenatal exposure to nicotine on inhibitory control may thus be of high clinical importance. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the influence of maternal smoking during pregnancy (hereafter referred to as prenatal smoking) on the neural circuitry of response inhibition and

Training leaders from priority populations to implement social norm changes in tobacco control: lessons from the LAAMPP Institute.

The development of leadership in tobacco control has been crucial in the fight against the number one most preventable cause of death and disease worldwide. Yet today, little scientific evidence exists regarding its actual impact, particularly among priority populations. This article describes the impact of the Leadership and Advocacy Institute to Advance Minnesota's Parity for Priority Populations (LAAMPP Institute), a major tobacco control leadership program for five priority populations: African/African Americans, American Indians, Asian Americans, Chicano/Latinos, and lesbian, gay, bisexua…

Preferences for tobacco control health education among Chinese university students: A discrete choice experiment embedded in a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use prevention among university students requires evidence on which educational program features students prefer. This study used a discrete choice experiment (DCE) embedded in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to quantify Chinese never-tobacco-using university students' preferences for attributes of a tobacco control health education program. METHODS: A DCE with six two-level attributes (organizer, content format, organization mode, frequency, educational content, delivery location) was administered to 260 never-tobacco-using university students enrolled in a Protecti…

Efficacy of acupuncture for patients with moderate to severe tobacco dependence: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco dependence poses significant health and economic burdens globally, with over one billion smokers and eight million deaths annually. Current smoking cessation strategies, including pharmacotherapy and behavioral treatments, often have limited efficacy and potential side effects. Acupuncture, a potential alternative treatment, has shown promise in previous studies, but its mechanism and long-term effects on craving remain unclear. METHODS/DESIGN: This two-center, randomized, controlled clinical trial will enroll 192 patients with moderate to severe tobacco dependence and ran

The association between childhood trauma and tobacco smoking in patients with psychosis, unaffected siblings, and healthy controls.

In patients with psychosis, rates of tobacco smoking and childhood trauma are significantly higher compared to the general population. Childhood trauma has been proposed as a risk factor for tobacco smoking. However, little is known about the relationship between childhood trauma and smoking in psychosis. In a subsample of the Genetic Risk and Outcome of Psychosis study (760 patients with psychosis, 991 unaffected siblings, and 491 healthy controls), tobacco smoking was assessed using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview and childhood trauma was measured with the Childhood Trauma Q

Treating tobacco dependence to aid re-employment among job-seekers: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: U.S. reductions in smoking have not been experienced equally. Smoking prevalence is greater among persons of lower education, lower income, and unemployed. We evaluated whether a cessation intervention for job-seekers would result in significantly fewer cigarettes smoked per day and a greater likelihood of tobacco abstinence and re-employment, compared to the control condition at 6-months follow-up. METHODS: Unemployed, job-seekers who smoked daily were recruited from five employment development departments in the San Francisco Bay Area, October 2015 to February 2018. Intention

Acute memory and psychotomimetic effects of cannabis and tobacco both 'joint' and individually: a placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis and tobacco have contrasting cognitive effects. Smoking cannabis with tobacco is prevalent in many countries and although this may well influence cognitive and mental health outcomes, the possibility has rarely been investigated in human experimental psychopharmacological research. METHOD: The individual and interactive effects of cannabis and tobacco were evaluated in 24 non-dependent cannabis and tobacco smokers in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, 2 (cannabis, placebo) × 2 (tobacco, placebo) crossover design. Verbal memory (prose recall), working memory (

Alcohol and tobacco, and the risk of cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract in Latin America: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT; including oral cavity, pharynx, larynx and oesophagus) have high incidence rates all over the world, and they are especially frequent in some parts of Latin America. However, the data on the role of the major risk factors in these areas are still limited. METHODS: We have evaluated the role of alcohol and tobacco consumption, based on 2,252 upper aerodigestive squamous-cell carcinoma cases and 1,707 controls from seven centres in Brazil, Argentina, and Cuba. RESULTS: We show that alcohol drinkers have a risk of UADT cancers that is

A Cross-Sectional Survey on the Use of Tobacco, Attempts on Cessation, and Locus of Control Among College Students.

Background Socio-cultural considerations (such as drug availability) and psychological traits play a significant role in predicting whether a person will use drugs in the future and dependency on the drugs. Second-, third-, and fourth-hand smoking and E-cigarettes are influencing factors for the use of tobacco in college students. This study conducted research to ascertain whether there is a potential relationship between tobacco consumption and various factors, including internal and external control sites and demographics. Materials and methods Participants in the study were found by walk-up

The role of causal ideas in the governance of commercial determinants of health. A qualitative study of tobacco control in the pacific.

The consumption of tobacco, alcohol and ultra-processed foods and beverages drives the global noncommunicable disease (NCD) crisis in Pacific small island developing states (PSIDS). Addressing the commercial determinants of health (CDoH) requires policy coherence across government sectors; however, entrenched neoliberal ideologies that exhort self-regulation of markets and market actors impede such efforts. This paper aims to explore the roles ideas play in governing CDoH, through the analysis of causal ideas in multisectoral tobacco governance in Fiji and Vanuatu. An explorative, qualitative
