Non-surgical management of post-traumatic internal and external inflammatory root resorption in an immature maxillary central incisor: 4-year follow-up.

Divergent pulpal responses following dental trauma may manifest as inflammatory resorption in one tooth and pulp canal obliteration (PCO) in other affected teeth. When such changes occur in an immature tooth with an open apex, diagnosis and treatment planning become particularly challenging. This case report describes a traumatised maxillary right central incisor in a young male patient with non-perforating internal root resorption (RR), external inflammatory RR and pulp necrosis, while the maxillary right lateral and left central incisors exhibited PCO. Cone-beam CT allowed precise definition

Factors affecting resorption in traumatically intruded permanent incisors in children.

There is a lack of consensus concerning the management of intruded permanent teeth. The objectives of the present study were to determine the prevalence of resorption for intruded permanent teeth and to establish the effect of factors on the timing, prevalence and rate of resorption and to examine the relationship between the timing of onset and the subsequent rate of resorption. Sixty-one intruded permanent incisors treated at the Paediatric Dentistry units in Belfast and Newcastle upon Tyne, during the period 1990-99 with a minimum follow-up period of 1.5 years, were studied. The timing and

[The relationship between labial-lingual inclination and the thickness of the alveolar bone in the mandibular central incisors assessed with cone-beam computed tomography].

PURPOSE: To investigate the alveolar bone thickness of mandibular central incisors with different labial-lingual inclinations by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: CBCT and lateral cephalometric images of 60 patients were chosen. The data was respectively classified into 3 groups by L1-MP: lingual inclination group (L1-MP<85.6°); normal group (L1-MP 85.6°-99.6°), and labial inclination group(L1-MP>99.6°). Three-dimensional reconstruction was made for CBCT, and the sagittal images of the largest alveolar bone area along the tooth axis were chosen. The central incisor roots were div

Electronic determination of root canal working length in primary molar teeth: an in vivo and ex vivo study.

AIM: To evaluate in vivo and ex vivo the accuracy of an electronic apex locator in primary molar teeth with or without root resorption. METHODOLOGY: Fifteen primary molar teeth with 30 root canals were divided into two groups: roots without resorption (n = 13) and roots with resorption (n = 17). Root canals were measured with the Root ZX apex locator in vivo, and then after tooth extraction, each canal was measured electronically ex vivo. The actual root canal length was measured visually, with the placement of a K-file into the most cervical edge of either apical foramen or resorption. The S

Exploratory Study of Growth of Circumference of Mandibular Fossa Adjacent to Petrous Portion of Temporal Bone Using Dried Skulls.

The morphogenetic process of development of the circumference of the mandibular fossa during tooth eruption, which involves the replacement of deciduous teeth with permanent teeth, is strongly affected by occlusion. To the best of our knowledge, no studies have investigated the effect of occlusion on this process. This study investigated the morphogenetic process of development during tooth eruption using dried skulls harvested from Indian donors. The average distance between the ala-major-squamosa suture and the foramen ovale according to age group was as follows: 3.24 mm in the 8-month-old g

20-year Follow-up of Recurrent Glandular Odontogenic Cyst Mimicking a Periapical Lesion.

Periapical lesions usually are caused by root canal infection; nevertheless, other pathologies may eventually involve the tooth apex, making the correct diagnosis more difficult. Glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) are uncommon and, despite their cystic nature, may present an aggressive behavior and a high recurrence rate. This report describes a recurrent GOC mimicking a periapical lesion that was followed up for 20 years. A 45-year-old woman described tooth discomfort for several years in the anterior region of the mandible that was not exacerbated during eating or occlusion. Clinical examina…

Case report: a large radicular cyst involving the entire maxillary sinus.

Cysts of the maxillary sinus of odontogenic origin have been well-documented in the literature. Most of these lesions involve the apex of the offending tooth and appear as a well-defined periapical radiolucency. Presented here is a case of an unusually large lesion, which involved the entire maxillary sinus and extended into the floor of the nose. The lesion also caused paresthesia on the affected side. The lesion was removed with conservative treatment without any postoperative complications.

Human life history evolution explains dissociation between the timing of tooth eruption and peak rates of root growth.

We explored the relationship between growth in tooth root length and the modern human extended period of childhood. Tooth roots provide support to counter chewing forces and so it is advantageous to grow roots quickly to allow teeth to erupt into function as early as possible. Growth in tooth root length occurs with a characteristic spurt or peak in rate sometime between tooth crown completion and root apex closure. Here we show that in Pan troglodytes the peak in root growth rate coincides with the period of time teeth are erupting into function. However, the timing of peak root velocity in m

Three-dimensional finite element analysis of the mechanical stress on root from orthodontic tooth movement by sliding mechanics.

In order to study mechanical stress on root from orthodontic tooth movement by sliding mechanics, a 3-dimensional finite element model incorporating all layers of a human mandibular dental arch with orthodontic appliance has been developed to simulate mechanical stress on root from the orthodontic tooth movement. Simulated orthodontic force of 2 N at 0, 30 and 45 degree from the horizontal axis was applied to the crown of the teeth. The finite element analysis showed when orthodontic forces were applied to the tooth, the stress was mainly concentrated at the neck of the tooth decreasing unifor

Association Between Residual Pericervical and Apical Dentine and Vertical Root Fracture in Endodontically Treated Molars: A Case-Control Study.

OBJECTIVE: Vertical root fracture (VRF) in endodontically treated molars (ETMs) is a multifactorial condition. However, the relationship between residual pericervical and apical dentine in ETMs and VRF has yet to be fully assessed. This study aimed to investigate the association between residual pericervical and apical dentine and VRF in ETMs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: ETMs with VRFs (44 cases) and those without VRFs (92 controls) were included. Residual dentine at pericervical level and apical terminus of root canal filling (RCF) were assessed based on the ratio between the mesiodistal widths of

How Does Intentional Apical Foraminal Enlargement Affect the Foramen and Root Canal Morphology?

INTRODUCTION: This study assessed the effect of intentional foraminal enlargement on the foramen and the apical root canal morphology. METHOD: Sixty mesial roots of mandibular molars were scanned by micro-computed tomography. Their apical foramina were photographed with a stereomicroscope before and after preparation. Three groups were formed (n = 20) according to the working length (WL). G-1: foramen - 1 mm; G0: foramen; and G+1: foramen + 1 mm. Each group originated 2 subgroups (n = 10): G-1: Buchanan's patency (size 10 K-type file) and foraminal debridement (sizes 20, 25 and 30 K-type file

Etiology and sequelae of root resorption.

This article reviews the current status of investigation into apical root resorption within the context of orthodontic treatment. Treatment and patient factors that have traditionally been investigated are discussed, along with the results of current research in this area. The need for rethinking traditional research strategies in the quest for identifying both control and causative mechanisms is explored. Finally, proposals for key areas of future interest are highlighted.

Immunohistochemical study of apical periodontal cysts.

Periapical lesions, as well as periodontal disease, seems to have cyclic patterns of evolution. Periods of burst may be intercalated with periods of quiescence. Because keratinocyte division must occur during cyst growth, it is presumed that epithelium status could indicate the biological activity of radicular cysts (RCs). Th1 and Th2 are important heterogeneous stages of lymphocyte differentiation. Delayed-type hypersensitivity immune reactions are mediated by Th1 lymphocytes, whereas Th2 populations mediate some types of humoral immune response. Th2 lymphocytes are characterized by high expr

Effect of Retreatment Protocols on the Push-Out Bond Strength of Hydraulic Calcium Silicate Cement in Open-Apex Teeth.

OBJECTIVES: During retreatment, complete removal of previous obturation materials is essential, as remnants may compromise adhesion. This study evaluated the effect of four retreatment protocols on the push-out bond strength of RetroMTA (BioMTA, Seoul, Korea), a fast-setting calcium silicate-based material, used as an apical barrier in teeth with open apices that had been previously obturated with gutta-percha and AH26 sealer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty extracted single-rooted human teeth were instrumented and obturated using lateral condensation and then stored in phosphate-buffered saline

Accuracy of electronic apex locators in the determination of the working length in teeth with natural apical root resorption in the presence of different irrigation solutions.

BACKGROUND: Root resorption (RR) is usually a consequence of dental trauma, pulpal infection, primary occlusal pressure, or orthodontic tooth movement, leading to the loss of anatomical root formation. As a result of apical RR, the apical constriction is destroyed, and the determination of the working length (WL) may become difficult. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of 4 different electronic apex locators (EALs) - ProPex® II, Propex Pixi®, DentaPort ZX, and DTE DPEX V - in the determination of WL in teeth with natural apical RR in the presence of diff

Endodontic apical surgery with novel endoscope: Three-case series.

Successful apical surgery relies on effective magnification and illumination. In the field of endodontics, the microscope has emerged as the predominant tool for meeting these requirements. The rigid endoscope is also a valuable instrument in apical surgery. This study introduces three cases demonstrating the application of endoscope technology in endodontic apical surgery. The first case employs a soft endoscope for treating an anterior tooth with apical periodontitis, the second integrates an endoscope with new attachments for a premolar, and the third combines an endoscope, attachments and
