Purpose: To evaluate parental knowledge of the importance of the permanent first molar (PFM).<br/> Methods: Three hundred and eighty parents filled a 22-item questionnaire assisted by a trained investigator. They were asked to indicate the correct answer from the given list of options in order to assess their awareness about the eruption sequence of primary and permanent teeth and the importance of PFMs. Assessment of parental attitude toward preventive management and treatment of carious or infected permanent teeth was done, together with their willingness to comply with the treatment options

The purpose of the present study was to investigate persistent primary second molars in a group of young people in their late twenties with agenesis of one or two second premolars. In 1982-83 it was decided, in connection with the orthodontic evaluation of 25 patients, to allow 35 primary molars (one or two in each patient) to remain in situ. All patients had mixed dentitions and agenesis of one or two premolars. The primary teeth were generally in good condition, although root resorption and infra-occlusion (compensated by occlusal composite onlays) occurred. In 1997, 18 of the 25 patients wi

OBJECTIVES: Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) gel is an effective additive for white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) that enhances its chemical and physical characteristics and significantly reduces setting time while maintaining biocompatibility. The study sought to compare the outcomes of pulpotomies performed in primary teeth using WMTA mixed with 2.25% NaOCl gel or WMTA mixed with distilled water (DW).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was a randomized, triple-blinded, split-mouth, controlled clinical trial. Forty primary second molars from cooperative children aged 5-10 who required pulpotomy were r

PURPOSE: Prepubertal periodontitis is a term suggested for a form of periodontitis that starts soon after the eruption of primary teeth. There is increased awareness that the disease entity known as "periodontitis" is in all probability a family of related but reasonably discrete diseases. The purpose of this report is to describe the clinical, radiographic, and laboratory findings in 2 patients, as well as treatment of prepubertal periodontitis.
METHODS: This study presents 2 cases of generalized prepubertal periodontitis: a 5-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl.
RESULTS: Case 1 presented

OBJECTIVE: Skeletal dysplasia (SD) comprises more than 450 separate disorders. We hypothesized that their dental features would be distinctive and investigated the tooth characteristics of four patients with different SDs.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four SD patients with molecularly confirmed diagnoses, Pt-1 acromicric dysplasia, Pt-2 hypophosphatasia and hypochondroplasia, Pt-3 cleidocranial dysplasia, and Pt-4 achondroplasia, were recruited. A tooth from each patient was evaluated for mineral density (micro-computerized tomography), surface roughness (surface profilometer), microhardness, minera

Primary teeth play a critical role in the growth and development of a child. In addition to their role in esthetics, eating, speech, and to encourage normal function and resultant expected growth, the other main function of a primary tooth is to hold space for the permanent successor until it is ready to erupt. Space maintenance forms an integral part of preventive and interceptive orthodontics. After the premature loss of a tooth, not only do space maintainers maintain function and preserve arch length, they also maintain esthetics and eliminate any potential psychological damage a child coul

A study was done to evaluate long-term results of treating 387 maxillary molars with furcation involvement in 100 patients with chronic destructive periodontal disease. Results showed a favorable long term functional survival rate of 341 teeth (88%) 5 to 24 years after treatment, despite the fact that many teeth had at least one root with 50% or less of bone support before treatment. Of the 46 teeth (12%) that were ultimately extracted, 25 were present for a significant length of time (6 to 18 years) before extraction. The radiographs of 292 teeth (75%) showed no significant change in bone sup

Most infra-occluded and ankylosed primary molars with a permanent successor will exfoliate normally. Continuous supervision of occlusal development and radiographic control of normal root resorption have been recommended. The decreased height of the alveolar bone level at the site of the infra-occluded primary molar has been reported to normalize after the eruption of the permanent successor. However, opinions that infra-occlusion of primary molars entails a risk of future periodontal damage to the first permanent molars have been presented. The aim of this study was to perform a long-term fol

BACKGROUND: Stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) are regarded as an attractive cell source for tissue regeneration. However, the effect of different levels of root resorption on the characteristics of SHED remains less understood. Thus, the tooth source that is most suitable for the isolation of SHEDs needs to be determined. To compare cellular and biological characteristics of stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous posterior teeth with varying levels of root resorption.
METHODS: The pulp was obtained from the deciduous posterior teeth depending on the level of root res

SUBJECTS: From 2001 to 2004, 17 general dental practitioners (GDPs) in Tayside, Scotland, recruited 132 children aged 3 to 10 years at enrollment who had caries affecting matched pairs of asymptomatic primary molar teeth for participation in this split-mouth randomized controlled trial. Of these 264 study teeth with caries lesions, 42% were radiographically more than halfway into dentin, and 67% required Class II restorations. In 2000, the regional decayed/missing/filled teeth (DMFT) number was 2.47 (d3 1.71; mt 0.54; ft 0.22). Ninety-one patients (69%) had 48 months minimum of follow-up, or b

Pulpectomy aims at retaining the tooth in the asymptomatic state until exfoliation. Root canal obturating materials should resorb in synchronization with the primary root and get eliminated rapidly upon accidental extrusion. This systematic review aims at appraising the clinical and radiographic outcomes of Endoflas as an obturating material for primary teeth. An extensive literature search on obturating materials used for primary teeth using MeSH terms in PubMed, Cochrane library, and Ovid® from September 2002 to March 2020. Studies evaluating the clinical and radiographic success of Endoflas

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is an inherited metabolic disorder that results in poorly mineralised bones and teeth. Clinical symptoms vary widely from mild dental anomalies to fatal fetal defects. The most common dental symptoms include exfoliation of the primary incisors before the age of three with little or no root resorption, large pulp chambers, alveolar bone loss and thin dentinal walls. There is generally minimal periodontal inflammation associated with the bony destruction and tooth loss. The general dental practitioner is usually the first clinician to spot signs of the milder forms of HPP.

BACKGROUND: Because dental eruption is the result of a series of physiological events, it is important to acknowledge precisely the mean age of exfoliation and eruption of each dental organ. This is useful to establish diagnostic, preventive and treatment criteria. The aim of this study was to compare the cross-sectional and cohort methods toward estimating the average age of dental eruption.
METHODS: The study sample was comprised of 524 school-age children from the State of Mexico (273 females and 251 males). Only permanent teeth were surveyed: the first upper molar and central and lateral

Background: Early childhood caries is a serious public health problem. When caries extend to involve the pulp, various forms of pulp treatment are tried to stimulate tooth repair. Although pulpotomy is the treatment of choice for vital primary tooth pulp exposure but there is a trend among many dentists to perform pulpectomies in vital primary incisors. This study aimed to assess the effect of pulpotomy and pulpecomy in treatment of carious vital pulp exposure in primary incisors. Methods: We searched Pubmed and Cochrane library databases up to March, 2018, OpenGrey for grey literature and Cl
