This paper describes a case of autogenous tooth transplantation. An external inflammatory root resorption developed in a 30-year-old female patient and was successfully treated with the placement of calcium hydroxide-based intracanal dressings. Autotransplantation of tooth 32 into the extraction socket of tooth 30 was carried out with no intraoperative complications and uneventful postoperative course. However, the patient did not appear on the 14th postoperative day to initiate endodontic therapy of the transplanted tooth. She did not return for 3 months, at which time the clinical and periap

This review of hominoid dental development is presented in two parts. The first section reviews (1) the general relationship between dental development and life history in hominoids; (2) the methods used to document dental development, and (3) the nature of incremental growth markings in hominoid teeth. The second section builds on this and reviews the contributions to hominoid dental development that have been made by (1) studies of tooth emergence; (2) studies of tooth calcification stages, and (3) histological studies of incremental growth markings made either from sections of teeth or repl

The well preserved anterior upper and lower jaw fragment of an adult specimen of Coloborhynchus robustus (Pterosauria: Ornithocheiridae), SMNK 2302 PAL, allowed investigations of the replacement pattern of the dentition macroscopically and by using CT scans. The quantification of the dentition by Zahnreihen, Z-Spacing, and replacement waves indicates a complex pattern of different replacement stages in which large gaps within the dentition were avoided. The specialized prey-catching apparatus of Coloborhynchus thus could retain its function even following tooth replacement. The replacement pro

Tooth removal, particularly for patients with severe periodontitis, can frequently cause massive bleeding, postoperative infection, and bone resorption, resulting in a dry socket. Thus, developing bio-multifunctional materials with excellent antibacterial, hemostatic, and osteogenic characteristics for the prevention of dry sockets after tooth removal is highly desirable in clinical applications. Herein, chitosan-CaP microflowers (CM) and metronidazole (MD) loaded calcium alginate (CA) sponges (CA@CM/MD) with enhanced antibacterial, hemostatic, and osteogenic properties were developed via Ca2+

Recent studies have reported that supernumerary teeth were observed in the maxillary incisor area in several Pax6 homozygous mutant mouse and rat strains. To date, it remains unknown whether Pax6 is expressed during tooth development in any species. The study aimed to analyze the expression of Pax6 during mouse incisor and molar development. C57BL/6J mouse embryos on days E12.5, E13.5, E14.5, E16.5 and E18.5 were produced. Heads from these embryos, as well as from P1.5 mice, were processed for paraffin wax embedding (N ≥ 3 for each stage) and prepared for immunohistochemistry. Pax6 immunostain

For a few decades, a decrease in the caries burden in all age groups has been observed in Germany. The regular use of fluoride preparations is described as the main reason for the caries decline. It is well established that topical fluoride application directly to the tooth surfaces in the oral cavity, in particular fluoride-containing toothpastes and fluoride varnishes, is responsible for the decline. Several mechanisms of action, such as the formation of a calcium fluoride layer, remineralization, and the effects on bacterial plaque, were determined to be responsible for the overall clinical

BACKGROUND: Heavy metals including Cr VI are present in inadequately treated effluents that contaminate drinking water. Hence, Cr VI exposure can affect children through intake of breast milk from an exposed mother or bottle-feeding formula prepared with contaminated water. To date, there are no reports on the effects of Cr VI exposure on tooth formation processes concomitant to tooth eruption.
AIM: To study the effect of Cr VI exposure on tooth tissue formation in suckling Wistar rats by assessing dental tissues at different stages of tooth eruption.
DESIGN: Experimental animals received 12

OBJECTIVES: This investigation sought to develop a mapping apparatus for use in the assessment of both tooth and restoration wear.
METHODS: A computer controlled mapping device, capable of scanning a suitably prepared electroconductive tooth replica by means of an electrical feedback mechanism, was constructed and its accuracy assessed by measuring the thicknesses of four engineers' slip gauges 12 times each. The reproducibility of three potential methods of rendering a die stone replica electroconductive was also investigated. Finally, tooth replicas were surface profiled and compared empiri

UNLABELLED: The amount of residual dentin thickness and tooth position in the dental arch is crucial to determine whether an intraradicular post should be used. This study aimed to compare stress distribution on the root dentin of an endodontically treated tooth rehabilitated with CAD/CAM milled glass fiber posts (MP), cast metal posts (CMP), or prefabricated posts (PP) with or without ferrule support, using the finite element method.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A human upper central incisor was selected, scanned, and treated endodontically. The canal was then prepared for post-placement and scann

OBJECTIVES: Dentinal microcracks are frequently observed during endodontic microsurgery and are often considered unavoidable. Despite advances in surgical instrumentation, the influence of these technologies on microcrack formation remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and potential propagation of dentinal microcracks associated with piezoelectric root resection and zirconium nitride-coated ultrasonic root-end preparation.
METHODS: Sixty extracted human maxillary incisors were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 15). Root resection was performed using ei

AIM: To simulate in a laboratory setting longitudinal cracking in root filled premolar teeth, using cyclic mechanical fatigue.
METHODOLOGY: Mesial-occlusal-distal (MOD) cavities were prepared in twenty root filled, single-rooted, mandibular premolars restored with fibre posts and resin composites. The samples were randomly divided into two groups based on the loading approaches: static loading with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min and step-stress cyclic loading (1 Hz) with increasing amplitude. The loads and numbers of cycles to failure were recorded. Micro-CT was also used to identify the fra

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the stress distribution and subsequent fracture resistance of human maxillary premolars with mesial-occlusal-distal (MOD) defects restored with different minimally invasive restorations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy non-carious human maxillary premolars were selected and divided into seven groups (n = 10). Ten teeth without further preparation served as control. The remaining teeth were endodontically treated and received three restorative patterns: inlays without cusp coverage (I), onlays with palatal coverage (O), overlays with both buccal and palatal coverage (Ov).

INTRODUCTION: Maxillary premolars are among the teeth most susceptible to vertical root fracture (VRF) from lateral condensation of gutta-percha. These teeth are distinguished by a complex anatomy of the buccal root including a large depression in the dentin wall facing the bifurcation. It is hypothesized that tooth sectioning coupled with 2-dimensional fracture analysis is instrumental in understanding VRF in such teeth. VRF was examined by tooth sectioning following the development of a fracture mechanics analysis to predict VRF in such roots.
METHODS: The fracture morphology in teeth extra

This case report describes the surgical treatment of a large radicular cyst in a maxillary incisor of an adolescent, following an unsuccessful regenerative endodontic procedure (REP) and an apical plug. It highlights minimally invasive, age-appropriate decision-making. A 14-year-old boy presented with an acute abscess (pain, swelling, and fever) in the right maxilla. Tooth #11 was nonvital, with apical resorption, an open apex, and a huge radiolucent lesion involving Tooth #12, confirmed by CBCT. Initial treatment included incision/drainage, calcium hydroxide dressing, and antibiotics, which r
