Two patients with glaucoma who underwent uneventful trabeculectomy and extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation, experienced late and recurrent choroidal detachment. Surgical treatment in a West Indian black population with primary open angle glaucoma was randomized to full-thickness posterior lip sclerectomies or partial-thickness trabeculectomies. Forty-five posterior lip sclerectomies and 35 trabeculectomies were performed. With a mean follow-up period of 28.3 months, the eyes with posterior lip sclerectomies had lower intraocular pressures, reduced glaucoma medication requirements, and less failures. In a study of 94 combined cataract and trabeculectomy operations performed for 59 open angle simplex and 35 capsular glaucoma with coexisting cataract, followed up for 1 to 9 years, the overall control of intraocular pressure (less than or equal to 21 mm Hg) without therapy was achieved in 61 eyes (65%). This report describes a case of hypotony maculopathy developing in a patient with GAPO syndrome following a trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (MMC). A 42-year-old man with a diagnosis of GAPO syndrome underwent a trabeculectomy with an MMC application of 0.4 mg/mL for 1 minute.
