The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between serum lipase (LP), serum immunoreactive trypsin (IRT), and its inhibitors in patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) of diverse origin and to compare their time course with other acute conditions. Two patients with hereditary factor XI deficiency developed inhibitors following plasma transfusions. Neither had severe spontaneous bleeding. Mesotrypsin is a low-abundance human trypsin isoform with a unique evolutionary mutation that conferred resistance to trypsin inhibitors and restricted substrate specificity. The concentration of the pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor (PSTI) was measured in serum from 360 patients with acute abdominal diseases. Elevated levels were found in acute pancreatitis, cholangitis, choledocholithiasis, acute cholecystitis, pancreatic pseudocyst, malignancy, renal failure and in several different inflammatory conditions not connected with the pancreas. Five proteinase inhibitors which all inhibit the activity of bovine trypsin [EC 3.4.21.4] were isolated from African Elapid venoms of Hemachatus haemachatus (HHV, Ringhal's cobra) and Naja nivea (NNV, Cape cobra). All the inhibitors were essentially homogeneous by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence or absence of sodium dodecylsulfate. Effects of various binary organic solvents at different temperatures on the removal of lipids and beany or grassy odour of Bambara groundnut flour were studied. The highest lipid removal was achieved at 60°C (P<0.05), regardless of binary organic solvents used.
