Visual outcome and prognostic factors in cataract surgery in ocular tuberculosis.

PURPOSE: To analyze the outcome of cataract surgery in patients with ocular tuberculosis (OTB). METHODS: Medical records of patients with OTB who underwent cataract surgery between 2005 and 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. The primary outcome measure was corrected distant visual acuity (CDVA), and a good outcome was defined as CDVA 20/40 or better. RESULTS: There were 35 patients (41 eyes), of whom 13 (37.1%) were males and 22 (62.9%) were females. The mean age was 41.6 ± 13.8 (range 18-65) years. Anterior uveitis was present in 24 (58.5%) eyes, intermediate uveitis in 5 (12.2%) eyes, pos

Tuberculosis treatment failure in AIDS: vengeance with renal and ocular manifestations.

Tuberculosis treatment failure is not uncommon in patients with AIDS. Treatment failure is defined as a positive sputum smear or culture at month 5 or later in the course of the treatment. The clinical presentations in these patients show remarkable heterogeneity. In this report, we chronicle the case of a patient with treatment failure presenting as the disseminated disease, specifically ocular and renal tuberculosis. Additionally, we undertake here a brief literature review highlighting the increased resistance to tuberculosis treatment in patients with AIDS, the rarity of ocular tuberculosi

The role of anti-tubercular therapy in patients with presumed ocular tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the factors affecting the treatment outcome in patients with presumed ocular tuberculosis on anti-tubercular therapy (ATT). METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients with presumed ocular tuberculosis seen at a tertiary referral eye care center in the United Kingdom. Failure was defined as recurrence of inflammation within 6 months of completion of ATT. RESULTS: There were a total of 175 patients with presumed ocular tuberculosis who had ATT. Patients with intermediate uveitis or panuveitis and those on immunosuppressive therapy had higher odds of treatment failure

Ocular disease in patients with tuberculosis and HIV presenting with fever in Africa.

AIMS: To investigate ocular disease in patients with tuberculosis (TB) and HIV in Africa presenting with fever, and to determine if indirect ophthalmoscopy is useful in the diagnosis of mycobacteraemia. METHODS: A prospective study of all adult patients admitted with fever to a large central hospital in Malawi, Africa. All recruited patients had an ophthalmic examination, HIV tests, chest x ray, sputum examinations, bacterial and mycobacterial blood cultures, and malaria slide to observe the presence of parasites. RESULTS: 307 patients were recruited; 109 (36%) had TB, including 53 (17%) wit

[Fundamental principles of diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment of ocular tuberculosis].

Results of author's many-year studies of ophthalmic tuberculosis are presented. A method for verification of tuberculous origin and a system of diagnosis and differential diagnosis have been developed, which ensure a universal approach to diagnosis of ophthalmic tuberculosis and essentially reduce the incidence of erroneous diagnoses. Schemes for optimizing etiotropic drug therapy are proposed, decreasing the duration of the basic course to 6 months due to increase in the number of effective drugs during the initial phase of therapy to 3-4 and obligatory combination of systemic and local treat
