Tuberculosis (TB) is a multisystem infectious disease with both pulmonary and extrapulmonary manifestations. TB can also induce a hypercoagulable state, setting off a cascade of changes in the body, including systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and abnormalities in the coagulation and fibrinolytic pathways. Collectively, these factors significantly increase the risk of venous thromboembolism, such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. These complications can worsen the overall disease course and complicate TB management. We report the case of a 27-year-old man presenting

A 50-year-old man presented with cough and hemoptysis for 1 month. Chest CT showed an irregular mass in the right lung, with enlarged lymph nodes in the mediastinum and right hilum. These findings were suggestive of lung cancer with lymph node metastases. The patient was subsequently enrolled in a 68Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04 PET/CT clinical trial. 68Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04 PET/CT revealed a mass in the upper lobe of right lung, with intense tracer uptake. Meanwhile, PET/CT showed enlarged lymph nodes in the mediastinum and right hilum, with mild FAPI uptake. However, pathological examination confirmed the mass

Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of infectious disease-related mortality worldwide, affecting 1.7 billion individuals with 9,000 new cases annually in the United States. Disease burden in the United States is greatest among immigrants from areas with high TB rates (eg, India, China, Philippines, Vietnam). Active TB infection can be recently acquired or latent TB infection (LTBI) that becomes active long after initial infection. LTBI testing is recommended for health care workers at hire, immigrants from high-burden areas, and those in high-risk environments (eg, homeless shelters, correc

OBJECTIVE: Internal thoracic lymphadenopathy (ITL) has been associated with malignancies and non-tuberculous empyema. However, the association between ITL and active pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and the correlation between ITL and other imaging characteristics of active PTB has not been examined.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study comprising 137 adults with active PTB who had a concomitant chest CT over a seven-year period was conducted. Two thoracic radiologists evaluated for ITL as well as nine other imaging characteristics of active tuberculosis, including total lung invol

BACKGROUND: Linezolid was recently re-classified as a Group A drug by the World Health Organization (WHO) for treatment of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB), suggesting that it should be included in the regimen for all patients unless contraindicated. Linezolid use carries a considerable risk of toxicity, with the optimal dose and duration remaining unclear. Current guidelines are mainly based on evidence from observational non-comparative studies.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of linezolid when used as part of a second-line r

BACKGROUND: Identification of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis immunoproteome and antigens associated with serologic responses in adults has renewed interest in developing a serologic test for childhood tuberculosis (TB). We investigated IgG antibody responses against M. tuberculosis antigens in children with well-characterized TB.
METHODS: We studied archived sera obtained from hospitalized children with suspected pulmonary TB, and classified as having confirmed TB (culture-confirmed), unlikely TB (clinical improvement without TB treatment), or unconfirmed TB (all others). A multiplexed bead-b

In resource-limited countries, the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is based on clinical findings, chest radiography and the demonstration of acid-fast bacilli in sputum. Few data are available on the use of ultrasound (US) to diagnose pulmonary TB. Chest US was performed in patients with lung TB from a rural African setting, to look for signs of the disease and to clarify the role US may have in the diagnosis of pulmonary TB. Sixty adult patients diagnosed with lung TB underwent chest US. All patients had abnormal findings. The most frequent was a subpleural nodule (SUN), which was mo

Simultaneous occurrence of leprosy and pulmonary tuberculosis is reported infrequently in the modern era. We report a case of pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosed in patient being treated with glucocorticoids for complications of leprosy (type II reaction). Physicians should recognize that the leprosy patients treated with glucocorticoid may develop tuberculosis.

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy is a syndrome frequently described in intrathoracic diseases, especially malignant ones. The association with lung tuberculosis is rarely reported. The authors describe the case of a 35-year-old patient, a smoker, hospitalised for lung cavitation associated with hypertrophic osteoarthropathy. The assessment of the aetiology was negative and the patient underwent lung surgery. The histopathological examination concluded as to chronic pulmonary tuberculosis. This report aims at alerting physicians about the possibility of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy in non maligna

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics, prognoses and predictors of mortality of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) with acute respiratory failure (ARF), and to investigate the adjunctive use of corticosteroids in such cases. TB patients with ARF requiring mechanical ventilation (n = 90) were enrolled retrospectively during 1989-2006. The patients were divided into two groups: tuberculous pneumonia (TBP; n = 66), and miliary TB (MTB; n = 24). The TBP patients were older than the MTB patients (mean age 68.0 versus 54.5 yrs), and the mean+/-SD interval f

INTRODUCTION: Optic neuromyelitis or Devic's syndrome is a very rare disease affecting the optic tracts and the spinal cord. Its association with evolving pulmonary tuberculosis has been noted in a handful of case reports.
CASE REPORT: The authors reportthe case of a 40 year old patient with evolving pulmonary tuberculosis who experienced bilateral blindness followed by paraplegia and sphincter disturbance. Clinical examination and investigations excluded direct tuberculous involvement of the nervous system or a reaction to antituberculous therapy and Devic's syndrome was diagnosed, based on

Skeletal tuberculosis accounts for 1-5% of all tuberculosis infections. Of these infections, 50% involve the vertebral column and only 0-5% involve ribs. Rib tuberculosis is seen in only 0.1% of all tuberculosis infections. Skeletal tuberculosis is localised to a single site in 90-95% of reported cases. Multifocal involvement is uncommon and is usually associated with disseminated disease. We present a case of pulmonary tuberculosis associated with multifocal skeletal involvement.

We report three HIV-negative patients with spontaneous pneumothorax as clinical manifestation of active tuberculosis acute chest pain and dyspnea was the cause of admission. Chest roentgen grams showed lung collapse and parenchymal cavitation in two of therm and hydropneumothorax in the other. Outcome was favorable with antituberculous drug therapy and placement of chest tube. Although spontaneous pneumothorax is frequent in fibrosis pulmonary tuberculosis, it seldom complicated active tuberculosis in spite of increase of its incidence.

Typical CT findings of active postprimary pulmonary tuberculosis include centrilobular nodules and branching linear structures (tree-in-bud appearance), lobular consolidation, cavitation, and bronchial wall thickening. The CT findings of inactive pulmonary tuberculosis include calcified nodules or consolidation, irregular linear opacity, parenchymal bands, and pericicatricial emphysema. The typical appearance of primary tuberculosis on CT scans is homogeneous, dense, well-defined segmental or lobar consolidation with enlargement of lymph nodes in the hilum or the mediastinum. Miliary nodules m

Radioiodine may accumulate at sites of inflammation or infection. We have seen such accumulation in six thyroid cancer patients with a history of previously treated pulmonary tuberculosis. We also review the causes of false-positive radioiodine uptake in lung infection/inflammation. Eight foci of radioiodine uptake were seen on six iodine-123 diagnostic scans. In three foci, the uptake was focal and indistinguishable from thyroid cancer pulmonary metastases from thyroid cancer. In the remaining foci, the uptake appeared nonsegmental, linear or lobar, suggesting a false-positive finding. The up
