Vibrotactilometry with testing of the thresholds of the vibration sense at seven frequencies between 8-500 Hz in different intensities has been correlated with nerve conduction studies of the ulnar nerve to evaluate its diagnostic power in neuropathies at the elbow. Thirty-nine patients with entrapment symptoms were studied. Vibrotactilometry was abnormal in 33 patients (85%) and nerve conduction studies were abnormal in 19 (49%). The sensitivity of vibrotactilometry in relation to nerve conduction studies was 89%, and in relation to the patients' symptoms was 85%. We conclude that vibrotactil

BACKGROUND: Many techniques have been described to relieve the compression and reduce subluxation of the ulnar nerve following surgery. The subfascial anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve (SfATUN) is one described technique, but involves a long scar, risk of injury to the medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve, and possible nerve ischemia from anterior transposition. We assessed a more refined approach of endoscopy-assisted SfATUN for the treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome.
METHODS: A consecutive case series of 21 patients (15 males and 6 females) with evidence of nerve subluxation after

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the mechanism of focal conduction slowing in the median nerve in ALS.
METHODS: The patients with ALS and CTS and normal control subjects were tested with sonography of the median and ulnar nerves. The cross-sectional areas (CSAs) and the wrist-forearm CSA ratios were compared with the parameters of nerve conduction study.
RESULTS: The median motor distal latency was frequently prolonged in ALS and CTS. CSA and the wrist-forearm ratio of the median nerve were smaller in ALS than in CTS. The ulnar nerve sonography was similar in all the groups.
CONCLUSIONS: Selective c

BACKGROUND: Several sonographically guided injection methods have been described to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. In most cases, the medication diffuses through the carpal tunnel to the site of maximum compression of the nerve after being injected proximally. In this article, we describe a novel method of sonographically guided carpal tunnel injection that utilizes a distal-to-proximal, in-plane, and transligamentous approach. This novel method may provide ergonomic as well as safety advantages to both clinicians and patients, and should be considered by those performing carpal tunnel injectio

Throwing and racquet sports produce large stresses at the elbow joint consisting of tension on the medial or ulnar side, and compression on the lateral or radial side. Medial tension can lead to tears of the common flexor origin or medial collateral ligament, ulnar nerve subluxation, or pronator teres syndrome. Bony lesions include fragmentation and partial avulsion of the medial humeral epicondyle (little league elbow) or even complete avulsion of the epicondyle. The possible sequelae of excessive lateral compression include osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum, osteochondral fractures

Cubital tunnel syndrome is a common disorder that affects the upper limb and involves compression of the ulnar nerve. However, this syndrome is rarely caused by multiple intraneural ganglion cysts. Of all intraneural ganglion cysts, only 9% affect the elbow. This study presents a case report of a 73-year-old female patient who manifested pain, numbness, tingling, and paralysis of the medial aspect of her left forearm, fourth, and fifth fingers of the left hand for six months. Intraoperative findings showed multiple intraneural cysts at the left elbow, which were confirmed via histopathology. T

The autor describes a case of compression syndrom of the ulnar nerve at the elbow after a blow-injury. At the operation the nerve presented a considerable fibro-lipomatous intraneural hypertrophy with extention over almost the whole length of the extremity. Furthermore, a similar case of the deep branch of the radial nerve is mentioned, presenting the same pathological condition. Till now, only cases affecting the median nerve, have been described in the world literature.

The five tunnels of the forearm and wrist, where nerve entrapment most frequently occurs, have been analyzed for diagnosis, treatment, anatomic variations, and prognosis. The value of a positive EMG report is to reinforce a clinical impression. If negative, it does not exclude the entrapment syndrome. When the diagnosis is accurate, the timing of surgery precise, and the surgical technique meticulous, the results from nerve entrapment surgery can be the most rewarding of all upper extremity surgery.

PURPOSE: To ascertain trends in the surgical treatment of ulnar nerve compression at the elbow within the United States.
METHODS: We analyzed the National Survey of Ambulatory Surgery to study trends in the treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome from 1994 to 2006. The National Survey of Ambulatory Surgery provides a comprehensive overview of ambulatory surgical procedures performed in the United States. Patients identified in the database with surgically treated cubital tunnel syndrome were verified by members of our research staff and compiled into these 3 groups: decompression, transposition,

The article deals with the results of the analysis of morphological changes in the perineural tissue of 54 hands (in 47 patients) which were treated by operation for compression of the ulnar nerve on the hand. The main variants of localization of compression of the ulnar nerve in Guyon's canal were revealed. The main trunk of the ulnar nerve is compressed at the level of the volar carpal ligament in most cases. Two or three levels of affection of the main trunk of the nerve or its branches are encountered in half of the cases. The causes of compression of the ulnar nerve on the hand are thicke

A patient presented with an ulnar nerve palsy which developed some time after minimal trauma to the arm. It was thought that the paralysis was possibly caused by leprosy, but because of doubt about the diagnosis, biopsy of the nerve was advised. At operation, it was found that there was nerve compression by a slowly developing occult synovial cyst of the elbow joint, which had tracked down the tight confines of the cubital tunnel. If there is doubt as to whether an isolated ulnar palsy is caused by leprosy, it may be reasonable to explore the nerve at the level of the cubital tunnel. If compre

Acute compression neuropathy of the ulnar digital nerve of the thumb is described in two women, 23 and 53 years of age. The injury was caused by pressure from a splint. The pathogenesis and clinical features resemble the classic "bowler's thumb." Early recognition and proper treatment will prevent irreversible neurologic damage.

Two cases of unusual snapping at the elbow are described. In both, the medial head of the triceps was found to be separated from the main muscle belly. During flexion of the elbow, the medial head dislocated over the medial epicondyle, producing a characteristic snapping phenomenon. Both cases were of long standing and had been asymptomatic for years. The first clinical symptoms were those of an ulnar neuropathy. In order to restore the normal position of the medial head of the triceps, its tendon was detached from the olecranon, passed under the central tendon and interlaced to it. The ulnar

OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to verify if shear-wave elastography (SWE) can be used to diagnose ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE). The secondary objective was to compare the cross-sectional areas (CSA) of the ulnar nerve in the cubital tunnel and to determine a cut-off value for this parameter accurately identifying persons with UNE.
METHODS: The study included 34 patients with UNE (mean age, 59.35 years) and 38 healthy controls (mean age, 57.42 years). Each participant was subjected to SWE of the ulnar nerve at three levels: in the cubital tunnel (CT) and at the distal arm
