This study used a nationally representative sample of 14,910 high school adolescents, aged 15-19 years. The large sample size presents a unique opportunity to evaluate firstly the geographical distribution of gambling prevalence, secondly, on a subsample of 5,920 adolescents, we studied the association of "no-problem-gambling", "at-risk gambling" and a relatively rare condition, "problem gambling", with demographic, environmental and behavioral variables. It differs from other studies due to the broad sample, thus enabling the combined analysis of the above variables that typically have only b

BACKGROUND: North American Indigenous youth are at increased risk for alcohol use, yet little literature explores why some choose to abstain from alcohol use. This study aimed to: characterize the reasons why Indigenous youth abstain from alcohol; explore how these reasons vary by age, sex, and whether or not the youth reside on or off a reservation; and examine how reasons for abstaining may mediate the relationship between cultural identity and intentions to drink 5 years in the future.
METHODS: Data were sourced from the Substance Use Among American Indian Youth: Epidemiology and Etiology,

OBJECTIVE: School-based health promotion programs can have a positive effect on behavioral and social outcomes among adolescents. Yet, limited classroom time and suboptimal program implementation can reduce the potential impact of these interventions. In the present randomized trial, we tested the effectiveness of a classroom-based substance use prevention program that was adapted for hybrid implementation.
METHOD: The hybrid adaptation included eight asynchronous e-learning modules that presented didactic content and eight classroom sessions designed to facilitate discussion and practice of

PURPOSE: To estimate the national prevalence of tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol use among U.S. adolescents (age 12-17) and young adults (aged 18-25; adolescents and young adults [AYAs]) with a disability and examine associations between disability and substance use from 2015 to 2019.
METHODS: Data from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health were used to estimate the prevalence of tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol use among AYAs with disabilities. Modified Poisson regression models evaluated linear time trends in past-month substance use and estimated adjusted prevalence ratios (aP

High rates of alcohol use disorder (AUD) are reported in people with major depression (MD) and bipolar disorder (BD). Substance abuse problems in adolescence may also indicate risk for future onset of mood disorders, especially BD. Data collected from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a large UK birth cohort, allowed information to be collected over several different time points and to test whether problematic alcohol use at age 16 was predictive of vulnerability to hypomanic symptoms at age 23. Controlling for a participant's gender, SES, marital status of the moth

BACKGROUND: Despite recent research examining youth access to alcohol, the extent to which relative ease of access to alcohol from various sources translates into the use of these sources is not known.
METHODS: Patterns of adolescent alcohol access in California were studied using a hierarchical analysis of self-reported and archival measures. A survey of 30 youths age 14 to 16 in each of 50 zip codes selected to maximize variability in median household income and off-premise outlet densities was conducted.
RESULTS: (1) Both actual use of and perceived ease of access to formal sources were p

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Adolescent polysubstance use has been associated with adverse social and health outcomes. Our aim was to measure rates and transitions to polysubstance use during adolescence and identify factors associated with initiation and discontinuation of polysubstance use.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. Multistate Markov modelling was used to estimate rates and identify correlates of transitions between substance use states.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Adolescent-parent dyads (n = 1927; adolescents in grade 7, age ≈13 years) were recruited from Australian schools during 2010/11

This study examined the longitudinal associations between participation in individual and team sports and indicators of alcohol use during the high school years and beyond. A total of 310 youths were surveyed over six waves of data collection (ages 12, 14 to 17, and 19). Participation in individual and team sports was measured through phone interviews, whereas frequency of alcohol use, frequency of intoxication, and problematic alcohol use were self-reported. Control variables included participation in other types of organized activities, sex, family income and structure, parental education an

BACKGROUND: California is the largest alcohol market in the United States. In 2005 alone, Californians consumed almost 14 billion alcoholic drinks, which contributed to many severe and potentially fatal alcohol-related illnesses and conditions. Alcohol use also causes violent and nonviolent crimes, as well as injuries and traffic collisions. While several studies have estimated the magnitude and cost of these problems nationally and others have analyzed underage drinking costs, no overall cost estimate at the state level currently exists for California. We present the first comprehensive estim…

This accelerated longitudinal study investigated how the COVID-19 pandemic, associated disruptions, and other risk/protective factors shaped youths' alcohol and cannabis use trajectories. Data were collected from 682 Midwestern U.S. families, each with two adolescent siblings (M = 14.44 years, SD = 1.54; 49.8% female) and one parent (M = 45.15 years, SD = 5.37; 85% mothers; 87% of participating parents identified as White, 9% as Black or African American, and 4% as another racial group; 5% were Latinx) across four waves preceding and coinciding with the pandemic (from March 2019 through May 20

School-based health promotion is a key setting for fostering positive youth health behaviours. Digital and immersive technologies offer promising opportunities to engage young people. This study explores a virtual reality (VR) intervention designed to prevent alcohol, vaping, and cannabis use among secondary school students. The intervention allowed students to navigate realistic, branching scenarios simulating peer pressure and substance use, aiming to enhance refusal strategies, critical thinking, and decision-making skills. A mixed-methods evaluation involving 277 students and nine teachers

UNLABELLED: Alcohol-related emergency department attendance in adolescents should be considered as a valuable opportunity to address and mitigate future alcohol consumption. Therefore, a paediatric department of a major district hospital in the Netherlands developed an outpatient preventive program targeting adolescents admitted for acute alcohol intoxication. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate how adolescent drinking patterns participating in the preventive program developed over time. This retrospective observational study involved 310 patients from the Reinier de Graaf Hospital, D

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify if childhood physical abuse is a risk factor for adolescent alcohol misuse and the specific pathways linking childhood physical abuse and alcohol misuse in boys and girls.
METHOD: The study enrolled 785 students from the baseline and first wave of a prospective cohort study developed at six high schools in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Conflict Tactics Scale-Form R (CTS-1), and Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) were used to identify childhood and adolescence physical abuse and alcohol misu

Theoretically, anxiety sensitivity-fear of anxiety symptoms-enhances perception of and emotional reactivity to autonomic arousal and mental distress, thereby increasing negative affect and motivation to use substances for negative reinforcement. Because no prior study of adolescents has tested if anxiety sensitivity is indirectly associated with substance use problems through symptoms of emotional disorders (i.e., disorders involving high levels of negative affect), the current cross-sectional study examined this theoretical pathway. Participants included ninth-grade students from 10 different

INTRODUCTION: Youth with a history of child maltreatment use substances and develop substance use disorders at rates above national averages. Thus far, no research has examined pathways from maltreatment to age of substance use initiation for maltreated youth. We examined the longitudinal impact of maltreatment in early childhood on age of alcohol and marijuana use initiation, and whether internalizing and externalizing behaviors at age 8 mediates the link between maltreatment and age of substance use initiation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were drawn from the Longitudinal Studies of Child Ab

BACKGROUND: We examined associations between parental separation during childhood and offspring alcohol involvement, adjusting for genetic and environmental risks specific to parental alcohol (AD) and cannabis/other illicit drug dependence (DD).
METHODS: The sample consisted of 1,828 offspring of male twins from the Vietnam Era Twin (VET) Registry, who completed a telephone diagnostic interview. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were conducted predicting onset of first use, transition from first use to first AD symptom, and transition from first use to AD diagnosis from paternal an

BACKGROUND: Adolescent substance use is associated with disrupted communication among brain regions underlying reward-driven behaviors (e.g., nucleus accumbens (NAcc)) and cognitive/emotional control (e.g., prefrontal cortex (PFC); medial temporal lobe), which may be linked to poor future outcomes (e.g., substance use disorder). However, the relationship functional brain connectivity has with trajectories of adolescent alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis use has received limited attention.
AIMS: Investigate relationships between adolescent substance use trajectories and young adult whole-brain NAc

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the relationship between irregular sleep-wake patterns and other aspects of sleep and mental health among adolescents.
METHODS: Community-based sample of adolescents (n = 200, mean age 16.8; 61.7% female) completed baseline assessment (i.e. sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, depressive symptoms, social anhedonia, problematic alcohol use), and 7-8 consecutive days of wearing wrist actigraphy. Irregular sleep-wake patterns were assessed via two methods, both based on actigraphy, to capture day-to-day irregularity (intraindividual variability, IIV) and weekly irregular
