Although primary bladder neck obstruction was first described approximately 70 years ago, it is within the past 20 years that the symptoms, signs, and methods of diagnosis and treatment have been elucidated. This article describes its typical presenting symptoms and signs that commonly may lead to a missed diagnosis for a number of years in many cases. The treatments typically available are pharmacologic or surgical. Unfortunately, most treatments have not been studied in prospective, randomized trials to assess true efficacy. The natural history of this disorder, both treated and untreated, d

PURPOSE: We developed and tested an animal model of bladder dysfunction due to posterior urethral valves using partial outlet obstruction of the fetal rabbit bladder.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Partial bladder outlet obstruction of fetal rabbit bladders was created on day 23 of gestation. Of the litter of 8 to 10 fetuses half was obstructed and the remainder served as controls. The doe and fetuses were sacrificed on day 30 of gestation (full term 31 to 32 days) and the fetal bladders were removed. Bladders that had doubled in weight from the average bladder weight of the control littermates were

Urinary bladder outlet obstruction is a common medical problem. In order to understand the effects of outlet obstruction on bladder morphology, physiology, and pharmacology, several animal models of obstruction have been developed using a variety of species. Although there are marked differences in bladder size, capacity, compliance, physiology, and pharmacology among these species, responses to outlet obstruction have many common characteristics. This article will be separated into six areas: introduction, genetic factors mediating the response during the initial period of partial outlet obst

An 8% and 7% incidence of bladder neck contractures (BNC) requiring relief by transurethral incisions (TUI), (124) was found after review of 1471 TURP's and 71 retropubic prostatectomies. Prevention of BNC was attempted by leaving a one centimeter strip at the time of TURP (62), incising the bladder neck alone (42), or incising the bladder neck and interureteric ridge (65). Bladder neck obstruction occurred in 4.8% of the strips, 14% of the incised bladder necks only, and 3% of the incised bladder neck and contiguous interureteric ridges. A significant cost savings is possible.

A thirty-six-year-old woman who had obstructive lower tract symptoms since childhood was found to have a contracted vesical neck. Transurethral resection of the vesicle neck showed a hidden cavernous hemangioma of the vesical neck. She was completely free of symptoms for six years. Indications for transurethral resection of vesical neck are discussed.

Cystometry was performed on 94 consecutive patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy or bladder neck obstruction, 45 per cent of whom had detrusor hyperreflexia. Of those cases with detrusor hyperreflexia 21 patients were re-examined 6 months postoperatively and 62 per cent of them had regained normal bladder function. The underlying pathophysiologyand the clinical aspects are discussed.

We report a case of bladder pain syndrome (BPS) in which pain improved with clean intermittent catheterization (CIC). The patient wasa 26-year-old woman who had experienced urinary frequency since childhood. Two years prior to visiting our hospital, her symptoms worsened, leading her to seek medical attention for increased frequency and bladder pain. Cystoscopy revealed no Hunner's lesions, but a voiding diary indicated reduced bladder capacity. A trial of bladder hydrodistension was performed without symptomatic improvement. She was referred to our department for further evaluation and manage

INTRODUCTION: Herein, we provide a review of the indications, practical considerations, and interpretation of urodynamics (UDS) with or without fluoroscopy, as well as cystourethroscopy, for women with suspected bladder outlet obstruction (BOO).
METHODS AND RESULTS: A narrative review was performed focusing on the current primary literature and society guidelines around advanced diagnostic modalities for female BOO patients. UDS studies help diagnose BOO by identifying high-pressure low-flow voiding patterns and/or the characteristic radiographic appearance of the bladder neck and urethra dur
