Ureteral calculi were found in 5 children who were receiving or had recently completed remission induction therapy for acute leukemia or lymphoma. All 5 patients had abdominal or back pain and 3 had gross hematuria. The diagnosis of urolithiasis was suggested by excretory urograms that showed obstructive uropathy (4 patients) and by computerized tomography scans that demonstrated ureterovesical obstruction (1 patient with acute renal failure and anuria). With a single exception the calculi were not associated with urinary tract infections. Chemical analyses in the 2 patients tested indicated t

During a 21/2 year period at Port Moresby, 852 patients had intravenous pyelograms. Two thirds of the patients were males and over half were Papua New Guineans. 34% of the patients had detectable urinary tract abnormalities of whom 38% had urinary calculi. Renal and ureteric calculi were particularly common in expatriate males, being found twice as commonly as in Papua New Guinean males. Although there were some Papua New Guinean male children with bladder calculi, the frequency appeared less than that found in some other developing countries. Other common findings included congenital urinary …

Congenital diverticulum of male urethra is an uncommon entity. Neglected management complicates the process in the form of calculi formation and recurrent urinary infection. A 10-year-old boy presented with urinary voiding disturbances and development of a painless hard lump at the penoscrotal junction. Imaging demonstrated presence of anterior urethral diverticulum with contained calculi in it. Open urethral diverticulectomy, extraction of multiple calculi, and primary urethral reconstruction over a Foley catheter was carried out. Early diagnosis and individualized surgical management of cong

During the last ten years twenty children with hereditary haemolitic anemia were admitted to the Children's University Hospital. As hyperbilirubinemia is one of the factors influencing calculi formation, we made systematic examination of the biliary and urinary pathways, because throughout these the excretory activity of bilirubin and its compound urobilinogen is performed. Owing to such a procedure, out of twenty children ten were discovered to have biliary calculi and other ten biliary and urinary calculi. As far as we learned from the available literature, parallel examination of these two …

Struvite calculi result from urinary tract infections secondary to urease-producing bacteria. To prevent recurrent infection and stone formation complete removal of struvite calculi is recommended. Two illustrative reports of patients with renal struvite calculi are presented in which 10% hemiacidrin (Renacidin) irrigation was instituted for stone dissolution. After surgical removal of the calculi a nephrostomy tube was placed in the renal pelvis. With confirmation of residual struvite calculi, 10% hemiacidrin irrigation was initiated. Urine cultures, electrolytes and nephrotomograms were perf

Eighty-one cases of urinary tract calculi in Nigerians seen at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, Nigeria, over a period of five years are reviewed. A relative incidence of 13 per 100,000 was established. At the time of presentation, 36 stones were found in the bladder, 21 in the kidneys, 20 in the ureters, one in the prostate and 3 in the urethra. Five patients had calculi at multiple sites. There was a male to female ratio of 5 : 1. Forty-one per cent of the calculi occurred in the 31-40 year age group, and 14.8% of cases were found in children. Over 80% of the calculi were

Urinary calculi was observed frequently in ferrets which were from a group used for influenza research. They were submitted for necropsy with various clinical signs. The calculi were composed of magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate and were found in the pelvis of the kidney, urinary bladder and urethra. Crystals of undetermined nature occasionally were observed in the kidneys.

To determine the safety and effectiveness of the Browne Pneumatic Impactor (BPI), a new pneumatic mechanical lithotripter, in fragmenting urinary calculi. Nine patients were treated between November 1995 and March 1996. The calculi were located in the bladder and urethra in one case, the bladder alone in one case, the distal ureter in six cases, and the proximal ureter in one case. The device was used through semirigid and actively deflectable, flexible fiberoptic endoscopes. All patients were treated on an outpatient basis. Fragmentation of the urinary calculi was successful in all patients w…

A 79-year-old bedridden female in whom bilateral small renal calculi were pointed nine months previously, presented with a high fever and non-specific abdominal symptoms. A diagnosis of bilateral renal and ureteral stones causing hydronephroureters with severe infection was made. She was referred to the urology department and treated with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). Persistent urinary tract infection caused by urease-producing bacteria, often seen in the bedridden elderly contributes to form infection-induced renal calculi. Such calculi are sometimes found in bilateral kidney

Urinary stones (calculi) are not a rare problem in pediatrics, presenting a prevalence of 1 case/20,000 children/year. Both nephrocalcinosis (deposition of calculi within the renal parenchyma) and urolithiasis (stone formation in the calyces, renal pelvis and bladder) may occur. Etiology of urinary stones involves metabolic, infectious, anatomic and idiopathic causes. Diagnosis and treatment require knowledge of a wide range of diseases. After urinary stones have been suspected, biohumoral tests and ultrasound examination should be routinely performed.

Extensive prostatic calculi in a young man should always elicit the suspicion of alkaptonuria. Although prostatic calculi are seen in chronic prostatitis, chronic pelvic pain syndrome and benign prostate hyperplasia, none of these have prostatic calculi or calcification as extensive as in alkaptonuria. A 36 years young man who had severed obstructive lower urinary tract symptoms with extensive prostatic calculi was found to be alkaptonuric on further evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Medical management of urinary calculus disease is a challange for modern science. In the present trial Ayurvedic drug "Herbmed," which is made up of varuna (Crataeva nurvala) and banana stem (Musa paradisiaca) was assessed to see reduction and/or expulsion of urinary calculi and also to assess the role of these drugs to reduce pain during expulsion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective randomized, double-blind, placebo control trial, total 77 patients with calculi more than 5 mm were included. All patients were evaluated either by X-ray KUB or USG KUB for 3 months. All patie…

INTRODUCTION: We present a case of Alkaptonuria (AKU) presented with severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to extensive prostatic calculi deposited in the para prostatic diverticulum. Prostatic calculi are seen in chronic prostatitis, chronic pelvic pain syndrome and benign prostate hyperplasia; however, in patients with AKU, prostatic calculi and/or calcifications are more extensive. A para prostatic diverticulum is a rare entity in males; however, it should be considered in patients with AKU based on this case report.

Ureteric stenting is an effective drainage method in patients with acute urinary tract infection caused by ureteral calculi; however, the optimal ureteral stent indwelling time has not been clearly defined. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ureteric stent indwelling time on the treatment of acute infection secondary to urinary tract calculi. A total of 142 patients with acute infection caused by urinary tract calculi were identified retrospectively from January 2011 to August 2015 at our institution. 63 patients were with ureteric stenting for 7 days (A group) and 79 patients

Balloon catheters were used in three patients to assist in the removal of upper urinary tract calculi that resisted extraction by conventional means. Both angioplasty catheters and Foley catheters may be used to dislodge hard-to-reach calyceal calculi or ureteral calculi into more accessible locations, such as the renal pelvis or an ileal conduit.

INTRODUCTION: Primary vaginal calculi are relatively rare, compared with secondary calculi. Primary calculi are often a result of urogenital sinus abnormalities, neurogenic bladder, or chronic incontinence.
CASE PRESENTATION: Forty-seven years old female with cerebral palsy since infancy had longstanding urinary incontinence. She visited her doctor for a fever and was referred to us with a urinary tract infection. Imaging revealed a large vaginal calculus. It was not possible to remove the calculus vaginally without crushing it, so we performed rigid cystoscopy with lithotripsy, using a pneum

BACKGROUND: Cervical cerclage represents a practical approach to addressing cervical insufficiency, but it also can bring serious complications. We present an extremely rare case of bladder erosion caused by the exposure of Mersilene tape after laparoscopic cervical cerclage for 3 years, which resulted in the formation of bladder calculi.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 35-year-old gravida 5 para 2 female with symptoms suggestive of urinary tract infections after 3 years of exposure to the Mersilene tape, including urinary frequency urinary urgency and painful micturition. The patient un

Kidney stones are a major public health concern with continuously increasing worldwide prevalence. Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) is the first line treatment choice for upper urinary tract calculi with ureteroscopy and has advantages of safety and noninvasiveness, but the treatment success rate of SWL is lower than that of other therapies. It is therefore important to identify predictive factors for SWL outcome and select a suitable treatment choice for patients with upper urinary tract calculi. In recent years, computed tomography (CT) has become the gold standard for diagnosis of upper urinary
